Check out this brutal footage from the Funeral Inception show—it’s actually one of the first ones featuring Despise the Sun. Even though Frank Mullen isn't on vocals anymore, I guess you could say the performance absolutely crushes it regardless. It's just wild.
I was just sitting here watching this clip on YouTube, and I have to say, it really got me thinking about that specific section around the thirteen-second mark. It’s such a subtle moment, isn't it? I guess you could say it captures something quite unique about the atmosphere they're building there. Maybe it’s just me, but I found the progression leading up to that point to be rather fascinating. It’s one of those little details that you might miss if you aren't paying close attention, but once you notice it, it kind of changes your whole perspective on the track. I suppose I'm just being a bit pedantic, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

That sounds incredibly powerful. I guess, though, my vocals are coming through a bit too low in the mix. Maybe they just need a little more lift? Paradise Lost I suppose that seems fine. Maybe.

I guess I should probably start by saying that I'm just thinking out loud here, but I've been reflecting on things lately. Maybe it’s just me, but I feel like there's a certain way to approach this, though I'm certainly not an expert or anything. It seems like a good moment to just share some thoughts, if that makes sense? I might be overthinking it, but I think there's value in being a bit more deliberate with how we express ourselves. Man, those old-school bands like Tiamat, Amorphis, or Sentenced... they always used to have those synth layers running in the background. It was part of the vibe.

I also remember catching a live set back in 2005—this new band Necrophagist was playing, and they were absolutely out of their minds. They had Muhammad on guitar and vocals. Honestly, if you're looking at pure talent, he’s probably the best guitarist in metal after Chuck Schuldiner. After him, I'd say it's Ihsahn from Emperor.

I listen to pretty versatile stuff—really everything is in the mix. I'm pretty open to any kind of sound, from synth-pop all the way to jazz. Always had a thing for industrial, too...

Music doesn't actually affect depression. Honestly, it’s just not a strong enough chemical to go in there and rewire your brain—if it were, I’d be constantly flooded with dopamine and adrenaline...

I wasn't really part of the scene myself, though I’ve always leaned toward punk. I didn't actually know anyone who listened to it back then—it seems like that era is truly dead and gone—but the metal crowd was pretty welcoming, and they became my little tribe for a while. I guess that's how I picked up a few good names. It isn't exactly my main genre, but there were certain things I actually enjoyed. I remember Tiamat, for instance. And Cemetary, specifically the Godless beauty album. As for Gojira, I don't think I've ever even heard of them.

I also remember Chuck Schuldiner (Death, uh, people used to listen to that back in the day). Sepultura was pretty big too. 😁

Yeah. Honestly, me neither—it’s not even about the notes or the musicality, it’s just those distorted vocals in every single track. Maybe they could try singing normally and then apply some fuzz effect or digital processing over the top? But hey, if someone digs that style, it's a matter of taste.

But this is a chat thread.

I wouldn't have any issue dating a "metalhead" or a hard rocker if we actually hit it off—we'd each just listen to our own stuff and call it a day. I might even play her some tracks I put together on my computer, and then whoever wants to pick up a guitar can go for it.

I don't know—maybe this is going to be the next "True Black Metal vs. Trash" debate... back in the day, those threads were the absolute best kind of chaos, plus they actually helped surface some decent music.

By the way, I could never get into that COF stuff—it’s just too overproduced and lacks actual taste. Like, in the mainstream black scene, they treated Dimmu Borgir as if they were some untouchable institution.
As far as black metal goes, I loved Mayhem—honestly, I think they're untouchable—and Attila has the best, most versatile vocals in the whole genre.
After them, there's Emperor...

Lately, I've been leaning more toward technical death: Spawn of Possession, anata, Gojira, and so on.

anata was an incredible band—just insane musicianship.
