I’m of the opinion that having just one moderator for this PDF is nowhere near enough, and I suppose the clearest evidence of that is right there in the document itself.
I’ve spent years managing two moderators, which has been quite an experience, I suppose. For about a year, starting back in the spring of last year, BAT and Humpty Dumpty actually had a third moderator on board—Gargamel. I have to say, she brought a certain level of impartiality and objectivity to the table that was really quite refreshing.
With a strict adherence to the rules—rules that were applied with total consistency to everyone involved. She really brought some much-needed clarity and structure to that PDF. Honestly, she deserves a ton of credit for that! 🙏
With her arrival...
It all happened overnight. The era of constant insults, trolling, and all that toxic nonsense that used to weigh down the entire community seems to have finally passed. It’s honestly such a relief to see the platform feel less heavy.
Since this PDF covers such a wide range of topics—and given that rule-breaking and obstructions seem to be a constant issue here—my personal take is (which, I should add, has been proven true in practice) that we're going to need...
I suppose there should be at least two moderators on duty—maybe even three, if we're being realistic about the workload. Because.
It would probably be a good idea if the administration actually started putting some real work into this. I have to say, this subreddit has become, unfortunately,
It feels like we’re living in a country where the rule of law has basically evaporated. There's no real authority left, and no sense of order to speak of—it’s just a free-for-all. People seem to do whatever they please, and even when someone commits a flagrant violation, there are absolutely no consequences. It’s as if the entire system of accountability has just folded in on itself.Justin Gray81 said:To be honest, I think you hit the nail on the head. If we actually titled this "Criticism (and Insulting) of Alternative Medicine," then probably more than 90% of the posts here would technically meet the criteria.
I suppose you're absolutely right, though it's a bit disheartening to admit.
And it’s actually quite interesting to consider that this is probably the case.
I suppose this is the one and only PDF where something like that is actually permitted. It seems like you might have accidentally sent some scrambled text! If you were trying to share a specific post or topic for me to rewrite, please go ahead and paste it. I'm ready to dive in and give it that polished, authentic American voice once I have the source material. kaže:
Give us something to work with here. I think it might be worth considering whether those of us who are actually active here—the ones consistently contributing to the discussions on the alternative boards—should be given the opportunity to propose our own candidates for moderator positions. I guess it could lead to a much more balanced community if the people doing the heavy lifting were allowed to have a say in who manages the space. Maybe it’s a bit of a stretch, but it feels like it would make sense to let the regular users weigh in on who actually understands the pulse of the platform. I suppose it’s possible that one of them might actually be interested in stepping up to moderate, which would finally put this whole situation to rest.
I honestly think this might be the best proposal we could possibly hope for. 👍Actually, as far as I can tell, there isn't really a "voice of the people" vote when it comes to selecting moderators. It seems more like the decision rests entirely with the existing mod team or the site administrators themselves. 🙂
Mark Cruz15 said:Exactly. I honestly think the smartest move would be to just bring in someone who’s already handling moderation for another PDF.
Do you really think the active moderators have enough bandwidth to deal with that on top of everything else? I mean, I guess it’s possible, but honestly, it seems like a bit of a stretch. Maybe they do, but I wouldn't bet on it. 🤔
I don't really think it’s a sound solution to pile this extra PDF requirement onto our current moderators. It seems like we'd just be adding more weight to an already heavy workload, and I guess I'm just wondering if we're making things unnecessarily complicated for them.
At least two, if not three, I'd say. The moderator.
They simply wouldn't have the bandwidth for it. If they tried to take this on, their moderation would inevitably become diluted; they'd be spread far too thin across too many different areas, and I suspect the overall quality would just plummet as a result.
I suppose I should probably address this, though I’m not entirely sure where to begin. It feels like we've drifted quite far from the initial topic, hasn't it? Perhaps it was inevitable, given how conversations tend to wander when things get a bit heated, but I find myself wondering if we can steer this back toward something more substantial. I don't mean to be pedantic, but I think we might be losing the thread here. kaže:
It seems to me that there isn't anyone truly qualified to be handling this role—especially someone who would leave a typo sitting right there on a locked thread.
The biggest issue, I suppose, is that people just seem to be...
toj I suppose we should probably get things moving here. I’ll leave the floor open for whatever topics you all want to dive into.
They wrote.Well, that’s exactly what this topic is for, isn't it? 🤷
It isn’t really the people who...
Despite the constant barrage of personal attacks and insults...It seems like there might have been a bit of a misunderstanding or perhaps a fragment of a thought left behind there. I'm not quite sure what you were aiming at, but if you were trying to make a point or ask a question, please do feel free to elaborate. I’d be more than happy to dive into a proper discussion once I have a little more context to work with.
They didn't violate a single rule, not even by a hair. The real issue lies with those individuals who are constantly...
They were being insulting. And that’s exactly why they went ahead and shut the whole thread down.
Mark Cruz15 said:I honestly don't think any of the current "alternative" commentators out there have the objectivity or the sheer quality required to actually pull this off right now.
I’m of the opinion that no opponent of alternative energy could ever truly serve as an objective or unbiased moderator; they would essentially just be...
I suppose I should probably address the issue of the obstructer. It’s one of those things that seems relatively minor until you’re actually dealing with it, at which point it becomes quite an inconvenience, doesn't it? I suspect we might be looking at a bit of a bottleneck here, though I don't want to jump to conclusions too quickly. Maybe it's just a temporary setback, but it certainly feels like something is standing in our way..
Are you honestly expecting that...
I suppose there’s a certain irony in the idea of an atheist—someone who holds a deep-seated disdain for organized religion, at the very least—being tasked with acting as an objective moderator on the subject. It feels like asking a dedicated vegan to judge a steakhouse competition; you can try to be fair, I guess, but the internal bias is always going to be humming in the background. There is a fundamental tension there, isn't there? To truly moderate a discussion on faith requires a level of neutrality that someone who actively opposes religious institutions might find incredibly difficult to maintain. Even if you approach it with the best intentions and a disciplined mind, those core convictions tend to color your perception of what constitutes a "valid" argument or an "extreme" viewpoint. Maybe it's possible, through sheer force of will and rigorous self-discipline, but it strikes me as an uphill battle against one's own nature....???😕
...or perhaps it will be the case that...
Is it even possible to have an objective moderator on a subreddit like this if they can't manage to maintain a neutral stance toward the LGBTQ+ community? I mean, honestly, it feels a bit questionable, doesn't it? 🤦
That would be quite something, I suppose.
It’s just utterly absurd. I honestly can't see any logical justification for appointing a moderator like that. It just doesn't make sense to me.
What exactly would be the end goal there? I mean, what would that actually achieve?
What exactly are we talking about? I feel like I might be missing a bit of context here. If you could clarify what you mean, I’d be happy to weigh in. I wonder if that moderator might consider upgrading the PDF?
Let’s not overcomplicate things here—we really ought to be realistic about this. In my view, there are already more than enough people within every single subreddit who possess the necessary skills and temperament to handle moderation duties.
To be perfectly honest, I’m approaching this with a genuine desire—and a real sense of purpose—to see this PDF actually improved....and while we're at it, maybe they could actually learn something about these topics too, so that in some way—I don't know, perhaps—it actually becomes useful.
It really feels like we’re all just living out the very scenarios being debated in these threads. It’s almost uncanny how much reality mirrors what people are posting about here.Honestly, I think only someone deep into some niche subculture could possibly find anything useful in this PDF.
Personally, I’m of the mind that BAT would be an absolutely stellar moderator for the Health and Medicine subreddit. It’s his exact field of expertise, he clearly has a genuine passion for the subject, and he possesses a level of knowledge that’s hard to top. Honestly, I don't think you could find anyone better suited for the role.
It also seems perfectly logical that for a PDF like ours, we should have a moderator who actually knows their stuff when it comes to Alternative—someone who genuinely understands the movement, someone who people interested in it would actually respect, and, frankly, someone who would be willing to step up and take on the role.
He was objective and completely unbiased, making sure to apply the Reddit rules consistently and fairly to everyone involved.I’m fairly certain I could put forward a few names from that PDF list of alternatives—people who are genuinely active and would likely make excellent, highly professional moderators (assuming, of course, they’d even be interested in taking on the role...).
The trouble is, I suspect my perspective isn't really going to carry much weight here. If things were handled differently—if there was actually an opening for outside input—I might have been inclined to offer some specific suggestions...
And let’s not lose sight of the fact that we really need to stay on top of the moderation side of things as well. I suppose I should mention that there’s some talk going around about volunteering lately. It seems like a decent way to spend one's time, if you have the energy for it, though I suspect everyone has their own reasons for stepping up. Maybe it's about giving back, or perhaps just finding a sense of purpose in the midst of everything else. It’s an interesting thought, really. I suppose it might be true that the team is larger, though I can't say for certain without looking at the actual numbers. It feels like they've definitely scaled up, but whether that extra headcount actually translates to more efficiency is always a bit of a question mark, isn't it? Maybe. It seems frankly absurd to waste energy trying to push someone toward a role they clearly have zero interest in—especially when you're essentially offering them the job of moderator for free.😵
I suspect anyone truly interested in the alternative scene—someone who actually lives and breathes it—would naturally possess a much stronger sense of drive and motivation.Mark Cruz15 said:Someone like Humpty Dumptym. An alternative type through and through, but she always maintained a certain level of objectivity.
She really was, I have to agree.
(By the way—there isn't even an "n" in her username, though I suppose it's hard to explain why so many people seem to see one there.)😁
