Printer recommendations?

I checked to see if there was already a sticky thread dedicated to this topic... 🙂 I couldn't find one, so here I am, just throwing this out there...

It’s been about 7 or 8 years since I last bought a printer, and my current Canon PIXMA ip4850 just gave up the ghost today. Completely out of nowhere...

The infamous B200 error popped up on the display, and despite my best efforts—cleaning the contacts, swapping out cartridges, basically performing surgery—nothing works. It's over. Goodbye, Canon.

So, I’m looking for some recommendations for a new printer.

What I need is something reliable with inexpensive ink, whether that's original or third-party. I've also heard of those systems where you have external tanks that you refill manually... I can't recall the exact name, but essentially, I don't want to spend a fortune on ink because we print quite a bit at home. Most of our stuff is black and white, but maybe a quarter of our prints include color, so I'd like something that handles color reasonably well. We go through roughly 300 pages a month, though it fluctuates depending on the season.

I've always had a bit of a soft spot for Canon; before this one, I used a PIXMA ip4200 and they were solid enough, provided you use compatible inks... but now I'm second-guessing everything. (As a side note: before the ip4200, I had an Epson. The print quality was great and I paid a premium for original ink, but the thing died in less than two years. Back then, warranties were only a year, so I learned my lesson about trusting Epson... though, of course, things change.)

To be clear, I don't need an all-in-one; I already have a standalone scanner. I'm a little bummed that I won't be able to print directly onto CDs anymore, but the last time I did that was back in 2012 for a birthday party, so it's not a huge deal. 😁

So, please, help me out. What should I buy? What has good reviews? What actually makes sense financially?

Picked up a Canon PIXMA iP7250.... It feels just like my old Canon, except for one glaringly obvious issue: there’s no rear paper feed. I clearly didn't vet the specs closely enough... *sigh*... Oh well, at least it takes compatible third-party ink for $3.25, which is a win. 🙂

Hey everyone, it’s been nearly a decade since my last post here. 😬

I'm looking for some solid advice on a laser printer. This isn't just for light home use—I'll be putting in some serious mileage, probably closer to 1,000–2,000 pages a month rather than just a few dozen.

My main goal is to print out books from PDFs and bind them myself. I know, technically it's a legal gray area, but I have zero intention of selling them; honestly, my eyes are absolutely killing me trying to read everything on a smartphone screen, so I just want to make life a little easier. 😬

I don't want to drop a fortune on this, though. Does anyone know of a decent printer for under $110 that can actually handle that kind of workload?

I've had mine for years now. Toner is cheap, third-party replacements work just fine, and the Wi-Fi is fast.

Since this topic popped up, what’s the actual best buy for a small color laser multifunction printer for occasional use? Is this one worth it?

What’s the cheapest color laser out there that isn't total junk or comes with a catch (like proprietary toner that costs more than the printer itself and runs out instantly)?

It’s for an office setup. A colleague ordered one recently—he went with an inkjet because he wanted color (paid about $500-$200), and now we’re buying new ink roughly 9 times a year even though we barely print anything, just a few pages here and there.

Do you honestly think it'll struggle with the workload I described? I'm looking at maybe 1,000 to 2,000 pages a month max; some months I might just print a single book, and other times—god help me—it'll be closer to five.
