Which video codec should I use?

So, I'm trying to get some MP4 movies to play on my LCD TV, but it looks like I've gotta convert them to AVI first and burn the subtitles right in.
I'm planning on using Adobe to get the job done.
While I'm messing around with the conversion settings, I hit this field labeled “video codec” that gives me these options: H.264, HVID, MPEG4.
Which one should I pick if I want to be 100% sure everything actually works on the TV?
