So yeah, this is how my setup looks after I finally killed off all those useless background processes, which honestly makes things feel a bit snappier

Man, that looks rough. First off, shadows actually pull way more resources than smooth screen fonts, and you totally disabled that 🤦 ...but that's what makes the text look crisp! Without anti-aliasing, everything just looks jagged and terrible compared to how it should be...
And those thumbnails instead of icons? Seriously?

As for those other two tweaks... what even is that? Like, maybe disabling startup sounds might shave a millisecond off your boot time, but swapping a solid color for a wallpaper? That’s basically doing nothing at all...

Well, you were actually the first one to start rambling about these supposedly "better" programs that require Windows, but you still haven't specified which ones they are. Or maybe just admit you aren't really sure what you're talking about... there's no shame in that.

It’s available for UNIX, too.

Give it another shot.

Yeah, but that would be Catia 4.

From what I can tell, it works just fine.

So I'm running Windows 7 and something weird happened yesterday—honestly, I don't even get how. I have two partitions, and suddenly all the photos in my pictures folder on the D: drive just vanished. I tried using Recuva and stuff, and it looks like they ended up buried in some $recycle.bin folder and then inside another subfolder that’s basically just a bunch of numbers. I turned on the setting to show hidden and protected system files, but when I actually open that recycle folder, there aren't any extra subfolders visible.

But if I use the command prompt, I can see the extra subfolders. So, what kind of commands am I supposed to use in cmd to copy things?

Like, say I want to copy folder d:\a to d:\b

I read something about copy or xcopy, but those aren't working for me.

I just want to move the files and folders from d\$recycle.bin back into the pictures folder, which is also on the D: drive.

Thanks!

Look, I’ve got a massive headache with PC gaming right now, and I'm pretty sure Windows is the culprit.

I'm running the 64-bit version of Windows 7 Ultimate. It seems legit since I actually see those annoying updates running when I shut down my rig.

I've tried about ten different games, and they all do the exact same thing: the game loads, starts up, and then—boom—it just freezes solid after maybe 7 or 8 seconds. I just sit there staring at a frozen screen until I have to hard reset the whole computer.

Every single time I right-click an icon on my taskbar, it gives me that "Run compatibility troubleshooter" option before I even launch anything. I've already tried running them as an admin and setting them to Windows XP compatibility mode, but nothing works. DirectX is installed and I'm on the latest graphics drivers.

Can anyone actually help me fix this, or am I looking at a total OS reinstall? Maybe I should switch to a 32-bit version?

Joshua Chavez28 It doesn't really matter if it says a Windows update is running—that can happen even on non-genuine versions of Windows 🙂 At the end of the day, whether your Windows is official or not shouldn't be the issue here; the game just needs to run. And honestly, you aren't going to gain anything by switching over to 32-bit Windows.

So, are you seeing this exact same issue across all ten games? Did you double-check if the cracks are actually working, or are they all legitimate copies? Also—just out of curiosity—when was the last time you gave your PC a good dusting?

So this exact same thing is happening with all ten games? Did you actually check if the cracks are working, or are they all originals? Also, when was the last time you actually cleaned the dust out of your PC?

I dusted my PC out five days ago. These aren't original games, but the same damn thing happens in almost every single one, usually at the same spot.

I just tried playing some stuff on Miniclip and it's the same story. It launches, I play for maybe 7 or 8 seconds, and then the whole thing just freezes dead. I can't move the mouse, and hitting Ctrl+Esc or Ctrl+Alt+Del does absolutely nothing. No error message pops up, no warning, nothing. Just silence.

I honestly have no clue what's going on. There's this green icon right by the clock that says
"NVIDIA continue." When I click it, this opens up:

It looks like it might be in another language, and I've never seen this on my computer until I installed Windows about 5 or 6 days ago. I have zero idea how to navigate this control panel, but it looks like there are settings in here that need adjusting or changing. Anyone got any advice?

Thanks.

First off, you’ll want to uninstall that NVIDIA driver. If you head into your programs list and look under "uninstall," you should be able to find the driver there and wipe it out. Then, just go to THIS PAGE TO DOWNLOAD THE LATEST GRAPHICS CARD DRIVERS. Not sure which specific model you have? You can always check under

Option 2: Automatically find drivers for my NVIDIA products Once those new drivers are installed, give your computer a quick restart—it’s always better to be safe—and then try launching the game again.

I already tried that. I've got the .exe for the latest driver right here. My card is a geforce 7600 GS, and the newest driver is 307.83.

The thing is, when I checked, I already had that driver installed and my games still wouldn't run. So I just went to the NVIDIA site, grabbed the driver, and installed it again without deleting the old one first since it was the same version. Restarted the computer and—nothing. Same problem.

Would it actually help if I nuked the old driver before installing the new one? Or should I be messing with something in this control panel instead?

By the way, I can select specific installed games here, and it looks like something needs adjusting:

And they've got these general settings too:

Just to recap—head over to your Control Panel and uninstall the current graphics driver first. Once that's done, just pop over to NVIDIA's site and grab the latest drivers for your specific card. When you run the installer, make sure you hit "Advanced" and check the box for a "clean install"—that usually helps clear out any old junk. After the installation finishes, give your PC a quick restart and then try launching the game again.

Just a quick question here. Which of these three should I just wipe out (all of them?)? Also, can you walk me through what else I might need to clear out of the Control Panel if I'm doing this?

Take a look at your GPU temperature.

I haven't even touched my drivers yet, but I already spotted this discrepancy:

image

So, according to the startup info, I'm running DirectX 11.0, but then it says support is only for DirectX 9.0 C

Does that mean my GPU maxes out at DirectX 9 while I have 11 installed? Is there actually a connection here, or am I just overthinking it?

Do I need to wipe DirectX 11 and just install DirectX 9.0 C instead? And if so, how do I even do that?

Please, I need help ASAP. I've been losing my mind over this for days...

Look, there’s zero point in trying to uninstall DirectX—honestly, you don't even need to. Newer versions are backwards compatible with the older ones anyway, so just let it be.

By the way, just a heads-up on the formatting side of things: the limit for images using IMG tags is 800*600. Please don't dump massive high-res files directly into your posts—it's a mess. Just drop a link instead.

So, here’s the deal. I tried reinstalling DirectX. Before that, I wiped my GPU drivers and did a clean install, but still nothing.

Even basic browser games on Miniclip won't run. That tells me the issue is either the graphics card itself or some massive 3D rendering error where things just won't load or play.

Has anyone else dealt with this mess? Any idea how I can actually fix or reinstall this stuff properly?
