Anyone still running Windows 7?

Hmmmmm, I haven't actually made the jump yet. I'm still running on Windows XP, which is exactly why I'm asking which one would be the better bet to pick.

If that Celeron is just a single-core processor—meaning it only has one core—I don't think there's much point in putting Windows 7 on that machine.
If you had a Pentium 4 running at maybe 2.4+ GHz, it might be okay, but with this setup, I guess your CPU is just going to be pegged at 100% all the time.

Nah, the processor is actually a dual core.
Here are the specs for my rig
I've decided to go ahead and install Windows 7 Professional but I'm stuck on whether to grab the 32-bit or the 64-bit version.
Basically, this laptop is just my go-to for browsing the web and chatting. I do some light work in Photoshop every now and then, and I'm pretty much living in Word most days, but I don't touch gaming at all—never have, never will.
So, which way should I lean (32-bit or 64-bit)?

Go with the 64-bit version—if you stick with 32-bit, you'll only be able to use about 3.2 GB of that 4 GB total. The 64-bit setup lets you actually use all 4 GB of RAM, and maybe even more if you ever decide to upgrade the memory down the road.

So, I just finished getting Windows 7 Professional (64 bit) up and running, and honestly, everything seems to be humming along perfectly so far.
Big thanks to everyone for the pointers and advice.

How do you actually install Windows after downloading it from a site like this? Is there a risk of burning out the CD?🙂

If you're feeling inclined, you can always just throw it onto a USB stick instead. It's entirely up to you. 🙂

It looks like I've hit a bit of a snag—turns out that standard 4.7 GB DVD just won't cut it. The ISO file is sitting a few MBs over the limit, so it's just a hair too big to fit. Any ideas? 😵 It’s because all those updates are baked right in—so yeah, it makes sense that the file is larger than the original ISO. If you don't mind messing around with it a bit, you can just flash it to a USB drive using Rufus. Otherwise, if you'd rather keep things simple, just grab an 8.5 GB dual-layer DVD instead. $5.00And then he just fries the whole thing.

And if I can't find a dual-layer disc? What then?😬

Well, you'll see once you actually pick up the DVD 😁

Easy for you to say...😁 my wife is on your side here.🙂
I'll put everything on a USB drive, but what's the deal with using Rufus? Should I be doing something specific with it?
I've been reading up on what it actually does, but honestly, I've never used it before.

Hey everyone,
So I got this new PC and I haven't touched it in like a month, and now I've totally blanked on my login password. I was checking out some stuff on YouTube, and it seems like most people say you should just boot into Safe Mode and use CMD, or maybe grab a Windows installation disc.
The thing is, I found a workaround, but even Safe Mode is asking me for a password.
And when I tried running a fresh Windows installation, it just wouldn't load.
I'm kinda lost, please help me out.
Thanks

Honestly, it sounds like you’re a bit lost when it comes to installing Windows. If you’ve got a Windows 7 DVD lying around, you just need to boot from that disc to get things moving. You'll probably need to jump into your BIOS first—if the CD/DVD drive isn't already set as the primary boot device, you'll have to change those settings and save them. Once that's sorted, you can go ahead and use that Windows 7 disc to format your hard drive and get a fresh installation running.

Anyway,
I grabbed Windows 7 from that site you guys recommended above.
The size of that .iso file fits on a DVD easily. There’s even some room left over.
Besides that big external hard drive where I keep everything—which I realized too late would get wiped if I tried burning an .iso file to it, and I definitely don't want that happening—I don't have anything bigger than a 2GB thumb drive lying around at home.
I haven't actually used Rufus. That video you guys linked just isn't working for me—the download won't behave like it does for the guy in the clip, and the app just won't load on my end. Instead, I just downloaded the Windows 7 ISO, burned it straight to a DVD, and it boots up perfectly fine.
I finally got everything installed on my laptop. It wasn't exactly smooth sailing at first—no idea why it gave me such a hard time—but it's running great now.
Tried the exact same DVD on my desktop PC, but I'm just hitting a wall. Still nothing.
Staring at this black screen again. It just says "Bootmgr is missing - press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart." Honestly, I'm pretty frustrated right now.
Does anyone have any suggestions😵?
🙂

Did you jump into the BIOS on your desktop and set the boot order to prioritize the optical drive? Once you’ve saved those BIOS settings, you can pop in that Windows 7 DVD you burned, boot from it, wipe the hard drive, and start with a totally fresh installation of Windows.

That’s exactly what I mean! That’s why I don't get it!
Even when I actually manage to get the install finished, I shut down the PC feeling all happy like, "Okay, I actually did it."
Then I wake up in the morning, hit the power button, and... just a black screen.🥱
Still didn't work!
