I haven't actually given that a shot yet. To be honest, I'm a bit stumped as to why it wouldn't work in normal mode, so I can't say for certain if Safe Mode will behave any differently. If I were being perfectly candid, my preference would be to just leave things exactly as they are right now; the computer boots up just fine under this new user profile, and I've already successfully synced my Outlook with all my old emails. Since I don't really need anything else from my previous account, it seems like a functional workaround. My only real hesitation—and the one thing keeping me up a little bit—is the nagging worry about keeping that corrupted account sitting there on the hard drive. I can't help but wonder if it might cause some sort of unexpected damage down the road.

I mean, if everything is working fine, I’d just leave it be. You could always try deleting that corrupted account, but that's really on you .

If they don't fix up that first account—the one they stumble upon—and give it admin rights, they’re going to be stuck. They won't be able to get much done on the PC if they're just stuck with this basic user profile that doesn't have the power to grant those permissions.

Both of them hold administrator privileges

Is there actually a free version of 7 out there somewhere?

Well, you can grab a tool that lets you download any version of Windows 7 you’re looking for—once it's installed, you'll have a 30-day grace period to activate it. Now, you could try to find some workaround to bypass the activation, but honestly? My advice would be to just head over to eBay and pick up a product key for less than $10. It's totally legit, and it saves you all the headaches of messing around with sketchy activators... just search eBay for the specific Windows version you need. For example, here's one for Ultimate https://www.ebay.com/itm/Microsoft-W...YAAOSwZpRawIaS.

As for that Windows download link you wanted: https://www.heidoc.net/php/Windows%2...Downloader.exe

Something weird happened at work today. One of our workstations won't launch any browsers at all. Chrome refuses to open, Edge just crashes immediately, and Mozilla keeps throwing that "Gah, your tab just crashed" error. Everything else on the PC seems fine. Any idea what the hell is going on?

Regarding yesterday's issue: we tried running a Windows update today, but it won't even open. It just sits there with the spinning blue circle. Everything else seems fine—no slowdowns or anything. We ran a scan with Malwarebytes and found nothing. We also checked with our Norton AntiVirus, and that came up clean too. The only real problem is the internet; browsers keep crashing. Does anyone have any advice?

To start, try reinstalling whatever web browser you're currently using—sometimes a fresh install does the trick. If that doesn't solve the issue, though, it might be time to give your local IT guy a call to come take a look.

We tried everything we could, but since we didn't have any internet access, we attempted to troubleshoot via another computer on the network and still came up empty. There isn't a repair shop for miles out here in the middle of nowhere, unfortunately. That's why we were looking for some guidance online. To make a long story short, we fixed it by just creating a new user profile, and wouldn't you know it—the browsers work perfectly fine there.

Maybe a System Restore to an earlier date would work, assuming system protection is actually turned on.

We already tried that approach, but it didn't do much. It seems to be working fine now, though—fingers crossed it stays that way.

Does anyone have a clue what’s going on here or how to actually fix this?

So, I just finished installing Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit and grabbed all the drivers directly from the manufacturer's site. Everything seemed fine until I tried running a few programs, and now I'm getting this error: "api-ms-win-core-localization-l1-2-0.dll is missing." To be clear, I've already downloaded all the available Windows updates.

...maybe try running this command in CMD (as admin) sfc /scannow just to see if it can scan through those system files for you.

Download api-ms-win-core-localization-l1-2-0.dll

Getting hit with that "the program can't start because api-ms-win-core-localization-l1-2-0.dll is missing" error? It's a pain. You can fix it pretty easily just by grabbing the api-ms-win-core-localization-l1-2-0.dll file and dropping it into the specific folders listed in the installation guide. Easy enough, right?

Thanks for the help, but I'm still running into issues with certain programs...

I've decided to pull the plug on Windows 7 and just roll back to Windows 10. Clearly, there's some kind of compatibility glitch with this software that I'm not winning against.

Hey there,

I've got Windows 7 running on the computer in our conference room, but I can't seem to project my screen to the big TV like you normally would with Windows 10. Is there some other way to do this, or maybe a specific program I should be using?

The OS is basically a dinosaur at this point... just clone the drive. Unplug the old one, pop in the copy, and run the update straight to Windows 10. That way, if everything goes sideways, you can just swap back to the original drive running Windows 7.

ps:
There’s probably some workaround to get that option on the older version too... but honestly, it’s just a band-aid, not a long-term fix.

Hi everyone, I could really use some help here.
I've been running this old HP Pavilion for about 10 years now—it's an Intel i3 m330 at 2.13GHz with 4GB of RAM, currently sitting on Windows 7 Home Premium.
It’s starting to crawl, honestly, but a new desktop isn't in the budget just yet. Lately, I've been getting a "disc read error" during startup. From what I can gather, either the hard drive is kicking the bucket or I just need to reinstall Windows. It’s been ages since I’ve dealt with any of this, so I'm feeling a bit out of my element.
Should I just go ahead and put a fresh copy of Windows 7 on it? I'm assuming this thing is way too dated for Windows 10, right?

How does one even approach this nowadays? I'm definitely a bit rusty...😵
Do I just grab Windows 7 from a download link and call it a day? And will I need to buy a product key?
By the way, the CD drive on this laptop is dead—so I'm guessing I'll need to burn the Windows 7 installer onto a USB drive and boot from there?

If anyone could point me in the right direction, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!👍

First thing you gotta do is run a disk check... honestly, when it comes to Windows 10, it actually felt snappier than Windows 7 on my end, even when I was running it on an older rig.
If you're seeing bad sectors on that drive, and if it's hooked up via a SATA connection, I'd just ditch it and swap in an SSD.
