Let me elaborate on that a bit.
I am certainly not looking for anything for gaming purposes. My current focus is strictly office-oriented—I’m deep in the weeds right now working on my thesis and spending a massive amount of time reading through various papers and online forums. I spend a significant portion of my day glued to the computer.
In the interim, my brother has been lecturing me about avoiding wireless setups entirely, claiming they are almost always imprecise and plagued by latency issues. Is there any truth to that assertion?
It doesn't necessarily have to be wireless, though I would ideally prefer a short cable if I go that route.
The most critical factors for me are ergonomics, a shorter cord length, and a larger physical profile—I definitely don't want a tiny little mouse.

As for pricing, I honestly haven't looked into the current market trends, but I have no intention of buying some cheap, bottom-of-the-barrel junk. That said, I also don't want to overspend on something absurdly expensive, especially since, as I mentioned, gaming isn't my priority.

So, I’ve been using my Logitech M705 for quite some time now—it'll actually hit the four-year mark this coming November—and I honestly couldn't be happier with it. Of course, everyone has their own preferences, and what works for me might not work for someone else... 😉
I noticed they’re still selling it, and the resale value seems to hold up pretty well too. For what you're looking to do, slyrider20, this mouse should be more than sufficient. As for the battery life, I haven't had to mess with it much; if I recall correctly, I only swapped it out early last year, which is when I made my original post.

Even though it’s wireless, I haven't experienced any noticeable lag at all. I really think Logitech does an outstanding job with their connectivity. All in all, I’d highly recommend this one, or honestly, just any Logitech product...

I see it listed on Amazon for about $35. Does that seem like a fair price to you? I’m curious, what did you end up shelling out for yours? And more importantly, how does the ergonomics actually feel during a long session?

I have to give credit where it's due: the battery life is genuinely impressive. I’ve been using this thing for a little over a year now, and the batteries are still sitting at 80% capacity. At this rate, they should easily last another five or six years. Since it shipped with two Duracell batteries included, the mouse will likely die of old age before the batteries ever give up. It’s a far cry from my previous cheap mouse, where I was practically buying a new AA battery every month; by the end, I’d spent more on batteries than I did on the actual mouse.

The ergonomics are top-notch, there are plenty of useful extra buttons, and the scroll wheel feels great. However, I still can't wrap my head around that offset sensor. I honestly don't know which genius at Logitech decided that was a good design choice. I suppose it depends heavily on your grip style. If you’re one of those people who hovers their hand "in the air" while moving the mouse, you probably won't notice a thing—or so I read somewhere. But I tend to rest the weight of my palm directly on the desk and pivot the mouse rather than lifting it. With that kind of movement, the offset sensor struggles to track properly. For instance, if I pivot the mouse to the left, I expect the pointer to move toward the bottom-left corner—which is what a standard optical mouse with a centered sensor would do—but instead, it just moves straight left without any downward movement.

Then there’s the issue of the surface. Without a mousepad, the tracking is pretty abysmal. Once I picked up a Cooler Master CM Storm pad, performance improved significantly, so now I find myself carrying a mousepad everywhere I go. It’s frankly a bit embarrassing for a mouse at this price point; my old budget mouse worked perfectly on almost any surface imaginable.

At one point, I actually thought my unit was defective, so I took it in to file a warranty claim. They refused to swap it out because I had "damaged" the packaging. The problem is, the box is designed in such a way that you literally cannot open it without damaging it. Even the guy at the service center admitted that, noting he’d never seen anyone open it as carefully as I did, yet it was still considered "damaged." (GG Links, consider this my official protest against your policies.) Eventually, they sent it off for inspection, found some technical irregularity, and replaced it. I was certain I got a brand-new unit since it arrived shrink-wrapped with the price tag visible, but when I got home and opened it with equal care, it was the exact same experience. I tried to demand a full refund so I could just buy something else, but they wouldn't budge—absolute bastards. After digging through various forums, I realized the mouse isn't broken; it's just built that way, and it simply doesn't mesh with how I hold a mouse.

I have eventually adjusted to it. I use it for occasional gaming—I'm not a "gamer" per se, just someone who kills time when I can—but it still stings a little. It’s frustrating that a mouse that cost me nearly $167 isn't virtually perfect, especially when my old $$17 piece of junk felt almost as precise.

@crimsonfox20, I have to agree with you there. I haven't run into those specific issues on my end; I’m sorry you're dealing with that, but I suppose it is what it is.
I truly believe there are better mice out there—just like there are better versions of just about everything—so it really comes down to the price point and how much someone is willing to invest.
Personally, I was desperate to go wireless because I couldn't stand fighting with the cable constantly, so switching to this mouse actually solved that headache for me.

Anyway, looking at the current market, prices seem to start around $90

And then you have options like $103 https://www.amazon.com/logitech...m_medium=click

Prices have really taken a dive lately... I’m pretty sure I shelled out over $400 just over a year ago, assuming my memory hasn't completely failed me.

I just received this as a gift, so I'm not about to go out and buy a new one myself.
To be perfectly honest, I'm not exactly thrilled with it; the scroll wheel lacks any sense of precision—it isn't even "stepped," it’s just one continuous, smooth motion, which I find quite disagreeable—and I've heard through the grapevine that it's a total battery hog.

My previous gift just bit the dust on me, so I went ahead and pulled the trigger on a Logitech M705; it should be arriving in a few days, and once it does, I will be sure to report back with my detailed impressions.🙂

crimsonfox20 said:The battery life on that thing is actually solid—I’ll give it that much. I’ve been using mine for over a year now, and since the capacity is still sitting at about 80%, I figure it’ll probably last me another five or six years easy. And honestly, since they come with two Duracell batteries right out of the box, the mouse will probably give up the ghost before the batteries even run dry. It’s a huge upgrade from my old cheap junk where I was basically buying a new AA battery every single month... eventually, I think I spent more money on batteries than I did on the actual mouse itself.

I am honestly at my wit's end because I'm swapping out batteries on this Genius mouse every single month. 🤦 I actually miss my old, basic Genius—the one I got as a freebie bundled with a keyboard. That thing lasted me years until the USB cable finally snapped. Does anyone know if you can even find a decent wired mouse anymore?
The quality of these modern Genius mice is just... well, it's terrible. Besides that Logitech model you recommended, does anyone have other suggestions? I really don't want to drop a ton of money on something fancy only for it to die quickly, or worse, end up having to buy new batteries every two or three months.👎

I originally kicked off this thread back in November 2013 while hunting for a reliable mouse, and I can’t believe it’s been nearly five years since then. I’ve been using my Logitech M705 through it all, and looking back, I realized I actually haven't swapped out the batteries once since January 2016. Even today, the mouse is performing flawlessly without a single hiccup. I just checked the status, and it says I still have 45% power left, which means I've only used about 65% of my Duracell batteries over the last two years and eight months.

I haven't gone through a huge collection of peripherals; I'm certainly not a "hardcore gamer" looking for high-spec gear, nor is my profession one where a mouse is a critical piece of equipment. I'm just your average everyday computer user. After almost five years of heavy, daily use, I can honestly say I am beyond satisfied with this device. If you have the chance to pick one up, I would recommend it to anyone without hesitation, especially since I see it's priced around $110 at several retailers.

So, if you don't mind spending a little extra for quality, I give it a very warm recommendation 👍
