I was wondering if any of these newer motherboards would actually work with an Intel Core i7 2.33 GHz E6550 processor.

Sockets Supported PLGA775

Basically, you need a board that features that specific socket type.

None of those three options you listed are going to work...

Basically—you'll need a motherboard with that specific socket.

Those three options aren't compatible.

Oh, I see—so these should all work then, right? Since they all list socket 775...

Also, if you wouldn't mind helping me out—hardware isn't really my field, I'm more on the software side—would any of these graphics cards actually run on those NEW motherboards mentioned above?

The motherboards should work fine with that processor—and as for the graphics card, I’d honestly suggest grabbing an HD 7770.

Fair enough. Regarding the graphics card, I need something from this site that's compatible with those three options—ideally around $1,000–$1,200 and actually decent. I have to buy through them because I've got a 50% discount on any single GPU, so there's no need for anything overkill; just something mid-range that holds up for the next 3 or 4 years.

Wait, you're telling me you actually have a 50% discount??

It's long, rambling... let's just get back to the point—it's essentially some kind of reward, I suppose.

Let's try this: what's your current setup? I guess that processor isn't really going to do much for that graphics card

So, is that discount capped at a certain amount, or what?
If it's a significant enough deal, I’d jump on an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 690 or an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680 without a second thought.
That assumes you're running a Wide monitor larger than 22 inches.
Otherwise, if the screen is smaller, I'd probably just stick to a GTX 660/660 Ti or an AMD Radeon HD 7850/7870.

Basically—I'm running an Intel Core 2 Duo E6550 2.33 GHz, an ATI Radeon X1550, 2GB of RAM, and a 240W power supply (though I already have a 600W one sitting around waiting for new parts)—my motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-EP31-DS3L, plus a 400GB hard drive, etc., etc... I've got a Samsung SyncMaster 920n monitor that I have no intention of replacing, and I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate

@David Sanders4/">@@David Sanders4, my budget is roughly $500 so there you go.

So, did your motherboard finally kick the bucket, meaning you're hunting for a replacement? Just a heads-up—make sure whatever board you grab supports DDR2 RAM, otherwise you'll end up having to shell out extra cash for new sticks too.

@David Sanders4/">@@David Sanders4, if my budget stays within $500, then that's where we are.

Regarding that monitor, the AMD Radeon HD 7700 OC is a perfectly decent choice, and if you go with the HD 7850, you should be set for about three years... unless, of course, you try playing something with absolutely ridiculous system requirements.

It didn't die—I'm just swapping everything out... as for the RAM, no worries there; I can pick some up easily.

In that case, you don't really need anything else besides the GPU.

If you're already swapping out the motherboard, I guess you might as well ditch that ancient 775 CPU and the RAM too.

Larry Bailey94 said:It didn't actually die—I'm just swapping everything out... and honestly, RAM isn't an issue since I've got plenty to spare.

Switching the motherboard won't do anything for you—it’s just throwing money down the drain.

You’re going to have to overhaul the entire platform if you're looking to make use of a single 7770 or 7850. You might be able to hang onto the case, the CPU cooler, and your storage drives—provided they're SATA. What was the name of that 600W power supply again? I know it wasn't one of those cheap office units from Best Buy.

Basically, along with the graphics card, you'll need to swap out the processor, the motherboard, and the RAM (you'll need DDR3). Everything else just needs a quick check.

Well, if that's the case—would anyone here be willing to spare a moment to spec out a build for me? I'm looking for a CPU, GPU, motherboard (if my current one needs replacing), power supply, and the rest of the essentials. My budget is sitting between $2,500 and $2,800, assuming we pull everything from Best Buy 😕
. If you could put together a rig with an AMD processor, that would be ideal—I've heard they're more budget-friendly, and frankly, I have zero interest in throwing money away on Intel if they're going to charge an absolute fortune

I already told you why there’s no point in swapping things out. Just grab a new GPU and an extra 2GB of RAM.
GPU HD7700-7850
And if you’re planning on overclocking that CPU, just be careful not to push it too hard. The issue with these motherboards is that when you crank up the CPU clock, you end up hiking the FSB and DRAM frequencies along with it...
