The first one is the best baseline for comparison, and honestly, it’s three times better
plus there are way better found footage horrors out there than the first Blockbuster. REC obviously comes to mind first

I watched The Blair Witch Project (2008) and The Poughkeepsie Tapes (2007) which are both kinda "slower" paced found footage flicks, and they were decent enough, but I feel like the genre actually works better when it has that high-octane, frantic energy you get in stuff like V/H/S or REC.

though for me, boredom might actually be one of the best examples of found footage (aside from the pioneers at the CIA) The Ring (2005)
what really worked for me there was that specific kind of balance

the balance they strike in it is just superior

I couldn't agree more. The Ring is excellent. 👍

Now I'm off to hunt down Saw II; apparently, it just hit the shelves at Blockbuster.

Terry Morris41 said:The second tape is honestly pretty mid—just kind of monotonous and easy to forget, even if the whole vibe of filming in a gorgeous park or a nice little forest on a bright sunny morning is cool. The ending gets a bit bloodier which helps, but still, nothing to write home about.

I mean, seeing a movie through the eyes of a zombie? That was actually a pretty fresh take.
And man, I really dug that crisp, high-def look they went for under that bright sunlight.
It’s a legit change of pace because, let’s be real, every single found footage flick we've seen lately is filmed in some dark, grainy basement with garbage video quality.
Anyway, it felt like a breath of fresh air.

So, you won't believe what just went down.

I’m just out walking through the neighborhood, minding my own business, when I spot this old VHS tape just sitting there right on the sidewalk 😱

And obviously, I didn't just dive for it—I gave it a wide berth, just strolling past like nothing was even happening ☕

It’s excellent—honestly, better than the first installment.
The first tape is interesting enough and holds its own. It features a few solid jump scares, and the perspective—filmed through the mechanical eye of the lead actor—is a clever touch.
The second tape follows a zombie with a camera mounted to his helmet, tracking his brief little adventure. A forester in a national park provides a great backdrop for the action, and that scene where they crash the party as uninvited guests? Pretty well executed.
In my opinion, the third tape is the standout of this sequel. It’s shot like a documentary, following a crew arriving at a building owned by some old guy running a cult. It’s well-conceived, quite bloody, and the ending hits hard—especially that part with the goat-headed demon addressing the father 🤣.
The fourth tape is the weakest link—a lack of imagination paired with excessive screaming. It feels like a typical Hollywood production, though I suppose it’s passable.
All these tapes are being watched by two private investigators. As far as an intro and outro go, it isn't half bad.
Now, I am waiting—and hoping—that they film a third VHS to wrap everything up and give us an epic finale. ☕

I’ve mentioned this before when discussing horror flicks, but I’ll say it again.
That movie was straight-up revolting and shocking. I sat through the whole thing with my jaw dropped in disbelief, feeling pretty nauseated, too. That third tape was just... (words can't even describe it).
Usually, I head straight to IMDb to rate every movie I watch, but for this one, I honestly can't bring myself to leave a rating.

3/10, mostly just because the first one was actually watchable and the third had some potential. The first tape is surprisingly decent. The second one with the zombies is 😕 and 🤣... the third could have been great if they hadn't pivoted to that goat business instead of sticking to the cult stuff. As for the last one, it’s easily some of the worst footage ever captured.

Look, this whole V/H/S thing is actually a pretty sweet setup for an anthology. It gives all those hungry, unproven writers a real shot at throwing their wildest ideas and visions out there to see if they stick. In this latest installment, you can really feel that desperate hunger for something fresh, and honestly? That’s a massive win in my book.

Just finished the first V/H/S movie. Honestly, anyone who watches this without losing their mind—kudos to them. I only need one lifetime of this stuff. That forest segment was easily the most messed up part of the whole thing.

Low-key feeling like checking out the second V/H/S though.
