gentlemarlin said:Dear gentlemarlin,

You have received an infraction on Reddit.

Reason: Trolling

This infraction is worth 35 point(s)

So, who's running this thing? Where can I check the leaderboard?

I really need to know if Tinder users and everyone else are ahead of me. Personally, I'm breaking my own records, but I have no idea if I'm hitting Olympic levels here.

Here are the disciplines I'm competing in this month over on the politics / world subreddit:

Trolling: 35 points
Hate speech: 500 points

(Doesn't include anyone who has been permanently banned from the site.)

(Not sure if I posted this in the right spot. I tried to DM rezon@tor, but his inbox is totally slammed.)

gentlemarlin said:But who's actually in the lead? Is there a leaderboard somewhere I can check out?

Well, it really depends on what you're looking at—who's leading in what, exactly? And if you're asking about people's individual scores, that's pretty much their own business, if that's what you mean.

If points are supposed to be private business, then why on earth do they keep using them as an "argument" to shut down user appeals?

It’s much like how a criminal record remains confidential, which can then serve as either a mitigating or an aggravating factor during sentencing.👍

It’s all kind of pointless—mostly because things like this get scrubbed immediately whenever some random troll decides to report an unpleasant post or an insult. 👍

From what I've observed, people seem to jump in and start making accusations regardless of the circumstances or which side they're on.👍

You're kind of ignoring the fact that only one side even has the leverage to call the shots here. 👍

No, I simply took into account the fact that certain users on the FBI subreddit have a habit of getting into heated arguments with the moderators.👍

You missed the mark again—modders almost never get slapped with warnings here, and users can't even see them anyway. I'm talking about the mods getting warned, not just the regular users. 👍

I honestly can't believe we're even having this conversation again, but here we go! I was scrolling through some threads on Reddit earlier and it just hit me how much people love to argue about things that don't actually matter. It’s like, can we just take a breath for a second? I saw what northernpilot2 was saying about the recent shifts in the political subreddit, and while I get where they're coming from, I think they're missing the forest for the trees. It's not just about one specific policy; it's about the whole vibe of how we're handling things in America right now. And then you have rustydrifter10 chiming in with those super intense takes—look, I respect the passion, I really do, but maybe dial it back just an inch? We aren't at a trial before the FBI, you know! Anyway, I'm just sitting here with my coffee, thinking about how much easier life would be if we all just talked to each other like actual human beings instead of jumping straight to the most extreme version of an argument. Just my two cents, though! kaže:
If points are supposed to be a private matter between the platform and the user, then why on earth are they being thrown around as some kind of "gotcha" argument whenever someone tries to file a complaint?

I’m not entirely sure I follow your train of thought here. What I was trying to get at is that a user's total score isn't exactly public information meant for everyone on the forum to gossip about. Sure, if someone is filing an official complaint with the FBI and it actually makes sense to highlight their current standing to make a point, then fine—go ahead and do that. But just handing out those numbers to other people simply because they're being nosy? No, I don't think that's right.

I’m talking about how the mods and admins act—just like, "Dude, why are you even talking? Look at how many pages of nonsense you've posted."

I honestly can't believe we're even having this conversation again, but here we go! I was just reading through some of the threads on the politics subreddit, and man, people are really losing their minds lately. It’s like everyone is just shouting into the void without actually listening to a single word anyone else says. I saw a comment from Brian Edwards78 earlier that really struck a chord with me—he was making this point about how much the social fabric seems to be fraying, and honestly? He's spot on. It feels like we've lost that ability to sit down, grab a coffee, and just disagree without it turning into a total battlefield. It's exhausting, isn't it? And don't even get me started on what northernpilot2 was saying about the latest economic shifts. I mean, I hear you, I really do, but I think you might be overlooking how much the average person in a place like Columbus or Phoenix is actually feeling the squeeze right now. It’s not just numbers on a screen; it’s real life. Anyway, I'm just rambling now. I just feel like if we could all just take a breath and stop treating every single disagreement like it's an existential crisis, things might actually start looking up. What do you guys think? Am I just being overly optimistic, or are we all collectively losing our grip? kaže:
I’m honestly still reeling from that interaction between the mods and the users. It was just wild to see an admin basically snap at someone and go, "What are you even talking about? Look how many pages of nonsense you've posted." I mean, seriously? That kind of attitude from the people running the show is just... wow.

The number of strikes on your account might give you a little insight into how you carry yourself online, and yeah, it says something about your overall vibe as a user, but let’s be real—that isn't a valid excuse to just slap someone with a fresh penalty without actually explaining what they did wrong.

Brian Edwards78 said:You've missed the point again. Moderators almost never receive warnings, nor can users actually see them. I'm talking about the moderators getting flagged, not the moderation itself. 👍

"Almost never"? So, we're in agreement then—that this particular argument can be twisted by either side to suit their own agenda or to screw someone else over, and that there's plenty of nonsense being thrown around on both sides?😕

rustydrifter10 said:The number of bans you rack up can definitely say a lot about how someone carries themselves online—it's kind of a tell, right? But honestly, that’s no excuse to just hand out a fresh ban without actually explaining what the new rule is.

Is there actually any valid excuse for not moderating posts that people report? Seriously—is it really okay to just let them slide?
Brian Edwards6 said:So, "almost never"? Basically, we’re all agreeing that both sides can just weaponize that argument whenever they want—whether to score points or just screw someone over—and honestly, isn't there plenty of drama coming from both directions?😕

Yeah, almost never. Honestly, those few times they actually did—it was enough of a reason to just stop using them altogether, you know? Never. I’m really trying to keep my cool here—honestly. I just don't get why you’re constantly trying to deflect user insults onto the mods when, let’s be real, those things actually get sanctioned? Meanwhile, mods can talk trash and it goes totally unpunished. Trying to draw parallels between the two is just tacky, honestly kind of stupid, and—if I'm being blunt—a little insulting.

Are you suggesting it matters if the person reporting it has a history of getting flagged themselves? Honestly, no. A post either breaks the rules or it doesn't, period. Sometimes things fall into that weird gray area in between, sure, but that shouldn't change the standard.😁

Brian Edwards78 said:True, almost never. In those rare instances where they actually did, there was plenty of reason for me to never use it again and avoid essentially biting my own tail...

I see where you're coming from, but saying "never" feels a bit too definitive to be entirely accurate.🤷

Brian Edwards78 said:... I honestly don't get why you insist on equating users insulting moderators with the fact that user insults are regularly sanctioned while moderator outbursts seem to go unchecked...

Both types of behavior get penalized selectively (as does just about everything else, depending on a dozen different factors), and I only brought it up to offer a different perspective.
👍

Brian Edwards78 said:... Drawing parallels between these two kinds of insults is tacky, foolish, and frankly, a little offensive.

Well, everyone has their own standards, and personally, I find most of the posts on the FBI subreddit to be exactly like that.👍

rustydrifter10 said:Do you think it matters if the person reporting has a bunch of strikes against them? Not really—a post either breaks the rules or it doesn't... though sometimes it's kind of a gray area. 😁

In that case, maybe check with the moderator to see if calling people and their mothers animals actually counts as a violation here. I reported some blatant insults, and just a few minutes later—boom—the mod steps in and shuts the whole thread down. Honestly, looking back at that one strike I got for "insulting" someone, it feels like this mod doesn't quite get the difference between actual harassment and regular banter.

Brian Edwards6 said:I get where you're coming from—but saying "never" sounds way too absolute, doesn't it? It just isn't true.🤷

If you actually got what I meant, wouldn't you remember me saying almost never? You even caught yourself using that exact phrase—almost never—just a second ago! Is this selective memory or are you just trolling me? 😕

Brian Edwards6 said:Everything gets penalized selectively—both of those things, plus everything else depending on a million factors—so I was just trying to look at it from a different angle.👍

Well, looking at the number of bans handed out in all this mess, it's pretty clear that enforcement is incredibly selective.

Brian Edwards6 said:Everyone has their own taste, but personally, I find most posts on this forum to be just like that.👍

Personally, I think the vast majority of *your* posts are exactly like that. 👍

Brian Edwards78 said:In that case, you might want to double-check with the mod to see if calling users and their moms names actually qualifies as a violation here. I filed a report for harassment, and just a few minutes later, a moderator swoops in and shuts the whole thread down. If we look back at that time my warning was rescinded because it wasn't technically an insult, it really feels like this mod might be struggling to distinguish between actual verbal abuse and just being obnoxious.

Look, I don't think that specific post hit the level of "harassment," but it was definitely trolling. The moderator probably decided to lock the thread just to cool things down, though I'm not sure if they'll start handing out formal strikes for posts like that in the meantime. Sometimes, just hitting the kill switch on a thread is enough to settle things. Regarding your previous post where the strike was pulled—even if it wasn't an insult, it still wasn't exactly class act behavior. But hey, that’s not what we’re talking about right now; we already sorted that out via private message.

By the way, there's been a lot of off-topic chatter in this thread lately.

Let's try to get back to the main point, guys. If you have questions that aren't directly related to the original post, please move those over to a more appropriate thread.
