shadowpanther0 said:Alright, thanks a ton for the reply—though I’m still hoping someone else jumps in who actually knows the ins and outs of Windows licensing audits. As for buying them, I'm definitely interested, but since I need them for a whole fleet of machines, I'm stuck wondering how many to grab or if it's just easier to pay some programmer to handle it. Honestly, he claims they're legit, but I don't know...
Thanks again...

What kind of "programmer" are we talking about here? Look, there's no such thing as him "justifying" anything—those computers belong to you, which means the responsibility sits squarely on your shoulders.

If you want to get the actual facts on licensing, check this out: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/licensing

Either you can just buy enough individual licenses to cover every machine you have, or better yet, sit down with an authorized Microsoft partner and negotiate a custom Volume License program.

What kind of update are we talking about here? Just so we're clear—that specific error message pops up when the OS decides to kill off Google Chrome because it’s run out of available memory. It’s a software issue, not some hardware failure on your PC. And wait, you can't even boot the machine, or you can boot it but the screen stays black? Those are two completely different problems. Give me a bit more detail to work with.

The screen stayed black right after I booted it up.

Anyway, I remembered I have this friend over at FedEx and she basically fixed everything for me super fast.
With her helping me out via my phone, I managed to get the laptop into Safe Mode. We went in and stripped out all those useless startup apps and gave it a restart.
She poked around a few more settings using TeamViewer and now it's actually working... 😍😍😍

Hey, so I just finished installing Windows 7 64-bit after switching over from the 32-bit version, and I’ve got a couple of things bugging me... First off, I can't figure out why I couldn't just boot from the CD like I wanted to, even though my BIOS is set up to prioritize the optical drive, so I ended up having to just run the setup directly from inside Windows to get the install going... Then there's this weird issue where I'm trying to install my motherboard drivers from the original disc—which worked perfectly fine for me every single time in the past—but now it's acting like they don't even exist... My graphics card drivers installed without a hitch and everything seems fine, so I'm wondering if the other drivers actually did install and it's just being glitchy, which might be why I still have this Windows.old folder sitting there... Also, does anyone know if it's actually safe to just delete that folder or should I leave it alone...

Did he record—well, maybe he installed this, and this one record—to install.

Which old folder? I thought you wiped the drive clean and formatted the hard drive before installing the 64-bit version of Windows.

I'm trying to get this installed, but the damn thing won't even boot from the disc when I restart my PC, even though the disc is definitely bootable... I already went into the BIOS and set it to boot from the DVD drive first, so I ended up just burning the files while I was still inside Windows since it wouldn't kick off properly, but then it won't let me format the C: drive and it just creates a Windows.old folder instead... so now I'm gonna try a different DVD drive and see if that actually works

Hey there...

I've got Windows 7 Ultimate installed on my machine. Everything seems fine—it's fully activated and I even installed the American English language pack which
did a decent job translating the main interface elements. But here's the thing: there are still these little bits that haven't changed. When I go to shut down, it says SHUTTING DOWN instead of the translated version, and when I boot up to the desktop,
it just says WELCOME instead of being localized. I'm a bit confused because the language pack is definitely installed and working throughout the rest of the system. Is there actually a way to fix this? Can those specific phrases be replaced or translated too?

THANKS FOR THE HELP

So I went ahead and installed Windows 7 on my six-year-old PC yesterday, but honestly, maybe I shouldn't have... it's just not running great on 512MB of RAM, it feels pretty sluggish and keeps freezing up on me... kind of a nightmare, really... and I was actually looking forward to it too, haha

Maybe try adding some more RAM; it might actually help things run better.

My phone only has 512MB of RAM and it’s already struggling to keep up, so I can only imagine how much trouble a computer would have if it were running on such limited specs!

SSD Headaches
So, I picked up a new rig, got Windows 7 installed, and everything was running smooth—until yesterday when things started getting weird. I’m running a 120GB Samsung drive—pretty sure it’s an 840 series...
Even though the only thing on there is Windows 7 and the basic drivers—which, let's be real, shouldn't take up more than 70GB—I got a notification yesterday saying I only have 11GB of free space left. So, naturally, I went digging through files to see what's eating my storage. I found the "Users" folder apparently claiming to hold 45GB, but when I actually look at the individual files inside, none of them are even over 20MB. Why does Windows lie to me? Like, why does Properties claim there's 45GB in there when it clearly isn't? Is this normal? Just for context, I also have a 1TB secondary drive where I store all my actual stuff.
The Recycle Bin is completely empty. As for the rest of the specs, I've got an i5, 8GB of RAM, and a Palit 650...

Between the OS and the drivers, you really shouldn't be looking at anything more than 25 GB—70 GB or higher is just... well, it's wrong. You need to dig in and check a few things—take a look at your page file size, see if hibernation is actually turned off, and check how much space you've allocated to the recycle bin. Also, if you've been smart enough to move everything out of your user folder and onto a secondary storage drive, then that main user folder should basically be empty. Seriously, go ahead and toggle the "show hidden & system files" option in your settings—that’s the only way you're going to actually see what's eating up all that space.

wiredheron94- I’d really recommend taking a quick look through this guide on how to properly configure Windows 7 right after you finish the installation. Don't sweat it—you aren't going to break anything, just follow the steps. I personally followed everything laid out in there, and I still have about 99GB of free space left on my 128GB Intel drive—though, to be fair, you don't actually get the full 128GB once the drive is formatted, so it's more like 119GB to start with. Maybe Windows 8 takes up a little less space? Honestly, it's probably not much of a difference. http://www.overclock.net/t/1156654/s...-for-ssds-hdds

I have this old Asus laptop—it’s probably about three or four years old now—and I recently went through the process of performing a clean install of Windows 7 on it. Since then, I've run into a bit of a snag regarding the display settings; I simply cannot get the screen resolution to behave properly. It only presents me with two meager options—1024x... and 800x...
On both of those settings, the image looks completely distorted—stretched out and squashed at the same time, which is quite frustrating. Is there any way to resolve this issue?

Sure, you just need to install the graphics driver. You can either use the CD that came with your laptop, grab it directly from the manufacturer's website (you should be able to find the specific model number on the sticker underneath the laptop), or just head over to the chip manufacturer's site, like Nvidia or ATI.

Even with 4GB, I was running into issues. Not right out of the gate, but after a little while, things would start to crawl.
It wasn't until I moved over to the 64-bit version that things finally smoothed out once I hit 7GB.

It’s only now that 64-bit systems are handling 7GB without breaking a sweat.

Honestly, the processor is what actually matters, not the RAM.
Windows 7 only eats up maybe 500MB of memory at most. Everything else is left over for your actual apps.
With 4GB, you can install just about any graphic design software and actually get some work done.

The average user isn't going to need more than 2GB for anything.
Unless, of course, you're gaming... but that's a whole different conversation.

Your average user doesn't need more than 2GB. Period.
Unless you're gaming... but that's a whole different conversation.

Every single component matters... and the real trick is making sure they're actually balanced. What's the point of having massive amounts of RAM and a beast of a CPU if you're stuck with a slow hard drive? You've achieved nothing because everything else is just sitting there waiting on the drive to catch up... and so on.

Why can't my system find any updates? It keeps saying "Windows could not search for new updates" and just tells me to "check online for updates." Does anyone know how I can fix this? 😢
