mistybear522 said:I tried tweaking those settings too, but honestly, it didn't change a thing. I'm starting to think the issue is actually with the hardware itself. I've got a Brother HL-L2350DW, and this thing insists on having the paper aligned to the left when it pulls it in. If I slide an envelope to the left, it grabs it just fine and prints perfectly. But the second I try to center it or push it to the right? It acts like there isn't even any paper in the tray! Is it possible the software is sending a command for right-alignment? Because when I tried printing an envelope using standard A4 settings, the text ended up landing exactly where it should have...
Man, now I feel like I just made things even more confusing for everyone 😁 The problem is still hanging around...

My guess? It’s probably just a simple sensor issue inside the printer. If it keeps demanding everything be left-aligned, it's likely because the sensor (that little microswitch) near the feeder is positioned further to the left. That way, one single sensor can detect all the different paper sizes it handles.
You might actually be able to spot it yourself if you look closely—you'll see a tiny plastic lever that the paper pushes against as it moves through.

At the end of the day, you'll just have to adjust your "layout" to match how the machine wants to grab the paper, and call it a day.
For example, most laser printers have that sensor right in the middle, so the guides for the manual feed slot move in sync to keep the paper centered over the sensor.
I don't deal with inkjets all that much, but I'd bet the sensor is offset specifically so it stays versatile enough to handle photo paper, various sizes, etc., by keeping it off to one side...

I’ve run into a bit of a puzzle while working in Microsoft Excel, and I was wondering if anyone might be able to lend me a hand?

Basically, I’m trying to set up a formula where column L sums up all the values entered in column J, but only if the corresponding cell in column K says "YES." However, if I enter "NO" in column K instead, I need that specific value from column H to be subtracted from the total sum in column L. Does anyone know the best way to structure this?

I want column L to sum up all the numbers entered in column J, but only if the condition in column K is set to "YES." However, if I enter "NO" in column K, I need the value from column H to be subtracted from that total sum in column L.

Using a combination of IF and SUM functions. Honestly, I'm not entirely sure what your specific logic looks like or how large your data range actually is, but here’s a little nudge. I'll just write out the structure of the formula; if you copy this exactly as is, it won't work, obviously.

Basically, you should paste this formula into column L, since that's where you want the result to land:

=IF(K$$:$$="YES";SUM(J$$:$$);SUM(J$$:$$)-H$$)

Just swap out $$:$$ with your actual data range, and replace $$ with the cell address for your H value.

Can anyone help me out with a formula? I'm trying to set up a table where the final column (balance) automatically adds or subtracts based on whether it's a deposit or a withdrawal... I've been messing with this for days and just can't get it right. I've asked around, but nobody seems to get what I'm looking for. It would be such a huge lifesaver if someone could show me a simple fix... thanks. Here is what I'm working with:

What, are you using invisible ink or something? 😁

Looking at when you posted this, I can totally see why the formatting is such a mess and why you're talking about an invisible table. Honestly, just rewrite the post with all the details clearly laid out, and maybe then we can actually help you!

I'll just outline the order of operations within the formula, and if you copy it exactly as it is, it won't cause any issues.

Since column L seems to be your target destination, you should probably paste the following formula right there:

=if(K$$:$$="YES";SUM(L$$:$$);SUM(L$$:$$)-H$$)

Just remember to swap out $$:$$ with your actual data range, and replace that second $$ with the cell address for your H value.

Thank you so much. This is exactly what I was looking for.

It shouldn't be this hard, and a simple solution would really save my life right about now... thanks. Here is the situation:

Try doing it this way:

In E1, type "Starting Balance"
In C2, enter: "Deposit",
In D2, enter: "Withdrawal",
In E2, put in your starting amount, say 1000
In E3, use this formula: =IF(OR(C3<>"";D3<>"");E2+C3-D3;""). Then just drag that formula down column E as far as you need.

Everything should be set up and ready for your entries. Just double-check that it does exactly what you're looking for.

p.s. Use OR instead of AND here.

Does anyone actually know how to properly add captions to tables and figures in Word without resorting to those ridiculous hacks I see all over Google, like throwing in a random text box or just deleting half the borders on a table row to fake a header cell? 🤦
I'm stuck using Word 2007 here, and honestly, I've been digging through every right-click menu and setting imaginable, but I can't find a single actual option for adding a proper caption for an image or a table 🙂
.
I haven't been able to find a consolidated thread about Word stuff anywhere, and yeah, I already tried Googling it, but clearly, that wasn't going to help me much since nothing useful popped up 🤷

First, just build your table, then follow these steps:
Go to Home, select the table, hit the References tab, and then click Insert Caption. (Honestly, you can also just right-click the table itself and select Insert Caption from the menu—it’s much faster). A little box will pop up with some default text, like Table 1, and you just type your title right after it (for example, PAYROLL OVERVIEW), then hit OK. Now, if you actually want Figure instead of a table label, just click on New Label and type in what you need. Easy enough.
Once you've done all that, you'll see "Table 1 PAYROLL OVERVIEW" sitting right under your table. Of course, you can move that caption wherever you want. If you're one of those people who prefers the title to sit *above* the table, just grab the table with your mouse and drag it down underneath the caption.
It works pretty much the exact same way for images. The only annoying part is getting the image to actually move where you want it; you have to right-click the picture, go to Text Wrapping, and select Thigt. Once you've done that, you can just drag the image under the caption. There isn't some magical one-click way to automate the whole thing at once. It's just how it is.

Word has started autocorrecting my words for no reason...
Like, I type "goodness" and it flips it to something totally different, plus a bunch of other random stuff.

How do I shut this thing off? 🤷>
I was trying to knock out a research paper, but I just gave up because it's driving me insane...

If you can let us know which specific version of Word you’re running, your chances of getting a step-by-step guide on how to turn that off go way up! 🙂

Could use some help here—I’m feeling a bit lost... I need to create some lines: one dashed line and two solid ones. I want the spacing between them to be about 0.5 cm. I've been messing around with Word 2003 and tried pretty much everything I could think of, but nothing's working. I guess I'm just not the most tech-savvy person out there... 🙂🙂🤷

My trick is to insert a table with 'n' rows and just one column. Clear out all the existing borders first, then manually add back only the row borders you need—dashed, dotted, whatever you're looking for. Then just adjust the row height to get that spacing right.
