Any ideas?? This gray stuff keeps showing up behind my text.

If what @Arthur Anderson49/">@@Arthur Anderson49 suggested doesn't work, you probably just copied some text from the web and can't strip the background shading. Is that what's happening?
Just upload a small sample file for us to look at if you still can't fix it.

hollowfalcon said:Hey there. Just a quick question regarding Word. (referring to this specific query) when I set the Text wrapping to "Tight," but the image doesn't have an alpha channel—does the text actually hug the contours of the subject, or does it just wrap around the rectangular edges of the image frame? I need to know if I should bother filing a formal complaint. Thanks!

The way wrapping behaves really depends on the file type you're working with. Honestly, both scenarios are entirely possible depending on how the data is structured, so either answer could technically be correct.

But, if you want my honest prediction, I don't think your complaint is going to fly 🙂.

Greetings, everyone!
I was wondering if anyone might be able to lend me a hand with a minor technical hurdle I've encountered in Word. Since my work frequently involves drafting lease agreements for apartments and rental rooms, I am looking to develop a standardized template. My goal is to have a fixed document where I can simply plug in specific details—such as square footage and monthly rent—and perhaps insert photos later on. I actually managed to build a workaround for this previously by using some custom C code, but it is incredibly important to me that I find a way to achieve this directly within Word. Ideally, I would love to just input all the necessary data into a table, and then have Word automatically populate those values into the correct positions within the body of the text. Naturally, I am curious if such a feature even exists. 🙂
Srdacan pozdrav to you all!

I actually managed to hack something together using C code, but honestly, I need to get this done within Word. Ideally, I'd just fill out some kind of table with the info, and then Word would automatically slot everything into the right spots in the document. Is that even possible? 🙂
Best wishes to all!

Oh, that is super easy! Just write out and format your text exactly how you want that template to look. Then, go ahead and click click Save as and in the Save as type box (all the way at the bottom of that window), pick Template. Once you've saved it, you'll find that template waiting for you in the File / New drop-down menu. The first time you go looking for it, you might need to select On my computer, but after that, it should pop right up under Recently used templates.

Honestly, Word can handle pretty much any reasonable request, and yours is certainly reasonable enough 🙂.

To pull data from a spreadsheet into a pre-formatted template in another document, you're looking at using Mail Merge. Don't let the term intimidate you—it’s actually quite straightforward and intuitive once you get the hang of it: you just set up column headers in your spreadsheet, tell your Word Template "I want to link to this specific file as my data source," and then insert Merge Fields (which represent those column names) exactly where you want them to appear in the layout.

Once you've got the initial setup dialed in, you can generate an individual document for every single row in your spreadsheet with just one click.

It’s common knowledge that when you start a new page in Word, there's usually a bit of breathing room at the top. My issue—and it's a bit of a headache, honestly—is that my text starts right at the very edge of the page, with absolutely no margin at all. I’ve tried adjusting the left alignment to nudge things down, but that doesn't seem to do anything. I guess I'm just stuck wondering... what exactly am I doing wrong here?

Look, try moving your cursor all the way up to the top margin until you see the icon change—it looks like two arrows pointing at each other (that's how you show White Space). Once you see that, click there. You'll notice on the right side that the scroll bar hasn't actually reached the absolute top. Just grab it and drag it all the way up. That ought to fix the mess.
Best,

Does anyone happen to know 😁

I have two tables. The left one acts like a tally sheet, counting the cash denominations—for example,

50 units of $333
30 units of $167 and so on. The Total cell shows how much money is currently in the register. For me, this Total serves as the first shift's amount and also as the Cash Handed Over cell.

Then the second shift comes along and enters that same amount into their Starting Balance cell—essentially, the closing balance from the first shift becomes the starting balance for the second.

That is where I run into an issue.

At the end of the second shift, when they enter their own denominations into the left table (since they naturally made some sales, 🙂), my Starting Balance cell gets messed up. My question is: which formulas can I use to lock that starting balance? I want to ensure that even when the second shift updates the denominations in the left table, the starting balance remains fixed as the closing amount from the first shift.

Thank you sincerely to everyone who takes the time to understand this and help.😁

I’m not entirely sure I follow your logic here, but if a cell contains a formula—say, a SUM function—it’s going to update itself automatically whenever you change any of the numbers being referenced. If you want that number to stay frozen, you might consider adding an extra cell where you manually type in the value, or just use the "copy, then paste values" trick. That way, the cell stays locked at that specific amount regardless of what happens elsewhere.

Another thought: maybe try setting up two separate tables, one for the first shift and one for the second. Then, you can have a final cell that calculates the sum of both totals, giving you the grand total for the day at a glance.

Or, honestly, just send me the spreadsheet so I can take a look at it myself. 😉

Hey,
I need some urgent help with this:
I'm pulling data from a database into Excel (CSV). Everything went fine initially, but there's a major issue—the numbers use periods as decimals instead of commas, and it's causing a massive headache.
Basically, a lot of values that should be 2.05 have turned into 2.something, because Excel keeps converting them into dates. If I try to change the cell format to number, the value just magically turns into 41396.00 instead of going back to 2.05.

How do I fix this?
I tried using Find / Replace to swap out the weird date strings with 05, but that just made everything even more chaotic...
There is no way I can fix this manually; we're talking about 300MB of data here...

The only thing making this slightly less painful is when I use Find / Replace to change .5 to ,5 or try to strip out things like .2013 by replacing them with , but then I run into another wall. I have to run way too many Find / Replace operations, and Excel treats 2.5 and 2.05 as the exact same date during conversion, so it ignores that extra zero... So yeah, that method is useless too...
🙂

If anyone knows a way to handle this, I'd really appreciate the help...

The best way to handle this is to set all columns to Text format initially. Unless you have a specific date column in your CSV where you need exact date formatting, or a column with precise amounts where you want numbers, just stick to Text. You know, whenever you feel like Excel might start overthinking things and making its own rules, just force it to be Text. As for those amounts using periods instead of commas, just set the column format to Text, then use Find / Replace to swap the periods for commas, and finally switch the column format back to Number.

If you aren't doing a "Paste" but are opening the CSV file directly in Excel without getting those column format options, try renaming the file extension to .txt first, then open it with Excel.

I've found myself stuck in this exact same mess more times than I care to admit—trying to pull CSV files into Excel when the database is using American number formatting.
Like Jack Hayes mentioned, when you're importing (you go to the "Data" tab, then under "Get External data" -> From Text), you can actually specify the data type for each column. My trick is to set any columns containing numbers to text format right away.

After that, you just run a Find / Replace. You’ve got the "Replace All" button right there, so you don't have to waste your life doing individual replacements; it swaps everything in the document in one single click.

Now, if you're dealing with decimals, you absolutely have to use a placeholder—some third, random character during the replace process. I personally always use the @ symbol because I know for a fact it won't show up anywhere else in my data.
For instance, if you have a number like 5,258.56 that needs to become 5.258,56, you can't just swap the comma for a period. If you do that, you'll end up with 5.258.56 and completely screw up the value.
So, here is the workflow: first, replace the comma with @ (leaving you with 5@258.56), then replace the period with a comma (giving you 5@258,56), and finally, replace that @ with a period (to get 5.258,56).
I'm telling you, just use "Replace All" and the whole thing is sorted in a few clicks.

If you're only dealing with integers—just plain old whole numbers—and you simply want to strip out the period, just put the period in the "Find" box, leave the "Replace" box empty, and hit "Replace All." The periods will vanish.🙂

Once that's done, just highlight the columns you need and set the formatting to number.

Could someone please lend me a hand with getting a macro to work on a different computer?
I’ve put together a Word Template that includes a specific Macro command. It’s designed to trigger within a table to sum up all the numbers in the cells directly above the active one. Essentially, the Macro just automates the process: Insert -> Quick Parts -> Field -> Formula -> =SUM(ABOVE)

I usually use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+S (or whatever letter I decide to assign)

Here’s the thing: the Macro works flawlessly on my own machine. However, as soon as I email it to my colleagues or move it via a USB drive to another PC, the Macro simply vanishes.
The file uses the DOTM extension. I have already tried saving it as both a macro-enabled document and a macro-enabled template, but the Macro doesn't seem to "stick" through the transfer.

I don't think there's a restriction on displaying macros, and as far as I can tell, my coworkers don't have any blocks on loading them—at least, their computers aren't throwing any error messages or warnings.

I am wondering if the issue might lie within the Macro Security settings; perhaps I tweaked something incorrectly. My current setting is set to Disable All macros with notifications...

The code itself is about as simple as it gets:

Sub Macro1()
' Macro1 Macro
'
Selection.InsertFormula formula:="=SUM(ABOVE)", NumberFormat:=""
End Sub

When I C/P this into a completely new module under the document name (in Visual Basic), it either won't run, or I'm just doing something fundamentally wrong...

Honestly, I have spent the entire day combing through every possible forum and corner of the internet, and I can hardly believe there isn't an answer for this. Either the solution is so incredibly obvious that no one thinks to ask, or I am missing something very basic.
I don't have a ton of experience with Macros—just a little bit in Excel—but this Word situation is really making my head spin...

If there is some kind soul out there who could help me or point me toward a helpful link, ANYTHING would be greatly appreciated! 👍

You really should've just posted that chunk of the document with the table and the Macro for download so someone here could actually test it out.

I mean, would lowering the security settings actually do anything? Like, going into Tools, then Macro, then Security, and switching it to Median or even Low... that’s really the only thing crossing my mind right now.

Here is the link: http://www.sendspace.com/file/xjly5f

The very last cell in the total cost column should really be summing up all the cells above it.
Unfortunately, I can't seem to upload the entire document, but I’m hoping this snippet provides enough context..

Walter Jackson48, I've upgraded to a newer version of Microsoft Office (I have both 2010 and 2013), but for the life of me, I can't find where the security settings are defined.
Do I need a new tab? I don't see that specific sequence in my menu (or even in Visual Basic): Tools, Macro, Security, then Median or Low.
Besides, shouldn't the person receiving the document be the one handling those settings rather than me? 🤷
I'll admit, I'm a bit out of my depth here. 🤷

I downloaded it and it works perfectly fine for me. 🙂
The only thing I had to do was right-click -> update field on that final cell.
I'm running the 2013 version.

Hey there.

I was wondering, how do you set up Word 2007 on Windows 7 so that only the very first page has a header and footer, while all the other pages stay blank?

Thanks!
