I had my full gynecological exam today. My ultrasound came back clear, and I’m just waiting on my Pap results now. Everything else seemed fine, though my uterus is slightly tilted. During the colposcopy, the doctor pointed out some mosaic patterning on my cervix. He mentioned it might be nothing to worry about and that we should just wait for the biopsy results to be sure. I realize you can't really give any definitive answers without those official reports, but I wanted to ask for some perspective. In previous checkups—before I ever had a colposcopy performed—doctors always told me I had a small "erosion," yet my Pap smears were always perfectly normal. No signs of CIN, just Grade 2. Today, however, the doctor said it isn't an erosion at all, but rather a white thickening, specifically this "mosaic" pattern. Does this mean they were actually seeing this mosaic all along instead of an erosion? Has anyone else dealt with this? And how is it typically treated? Honestly, I'm pretty anxious about it.
Thanks so much for any insight you can share.
p.s. He didn't see any warts during the colposcopy; he only noted the mosaic pattern.

It’s honestly hard to believe that absolutely nobody knows anything here.😢

A colposcopy is basically an exam where they apply a iodine solution to the cervix (I might be slightly off on the specifics there) so they can spot any areas where the cells are starting to change. When you hear the term "mosaic," it’s essentially just a mix of healthy and abnormal tissue—there are different levels too, like a mild mosaic or something more pronounced. You don't necessarily have to have genital warts to have these changes; warts are usually linked to certain types of HPV that are generally less concerning, whereas these cervical changes involve the more serious strains. If your doctor found something during the colposcopy, I'm assuming they mentioned the possibility of an LLetz procedure, which is where they remove that specific tissue and send it off for a biopsy to figure out exactly what's going on.
Sometimes, the biopsy itself actually ends up clearing away the infected part.
Please don't let this scare you too much; just try to get all the facts you need so you can hopefully lower your stress levels a bit.
I really hope this helps.

I just found out during my colposcopy that I have mosaic patterning. The doctor didn't really explain what that means specifically; he just said it’s there and that we need to wait for the Pap smear results to come back before deciding the next step. He didn't bring up a biopsy, though he did mention that if my Pap results look clean, I'll just need to come in for annual checkups. During the exam, he applied iodine and some other solution (I can't quite remember what), and noted that this white mosaic area doesn't react to the iodine the way normal tissue does. Has anyone else dealt with this? Or was he just saying that to try and calm me down? I'm honestly pretty terrified right now.

I went through all of that myself when they first diagnosed me with CIN—it’s still pretty fresh in my mind, honestly 🙂
My gynecologist ended up performing an LLetz to clear out the abnormal tissue. I think I mentioned this before, but please, don't let it scare you too much, okay?
Maybe just do a little Google search on CIN... it might help to see what we're actually dealing with.

I’ve never actually had CIN or anything more serious than a simple infection before, and I usually get my Pap smear done every six or seven months. Everything has always come back fine. Honestly, I don't even know if there's an issue right now; my results aren't due until Monday. I have to admit, I'm pretty nervous about it, but there's nothing else I can do but wait. I hope you're doing okay now and that everything you went through is behind you. Is it possible to have mosaicism even if the Pap smear comes back normal—meaning, without any signs of CIN?

Dad's showing some changes on his Pap smear results. There's a whole thread about CIN if you feel up to reading through it whenever you have the energy and time...
If those Pap tests end up pointing toward CIN, your doctor will likely send you in for some swabs just to figure out exactly what’s causing those changes.

I get that, but a mosaic is still a change from the norm. I’m actually curious—is it possible to have a mosaic without having Cin? Hardly anyone seems to talk about it, so maybe it’s just a rare occurrence. Or perhaps Cin is the more common issue.

My results come back tomorrow, and I can feel the panic starting to set in.😢Honestly, I’m just crossing my fingers that the Pap smear comes back totally clear with no abnormal cells—just a clean bill of health.
