Hey everyone, it’s been a while since I last checked in here. Honestly, I haven't had much bandwidth to keep up with this thread, and it looks like quite a bit has shifted since my last visit... there was some talk about the first SP1 dropping within a week. What’s the actual status on that? Has it officially hit the streets yet? I've already upgraded my Windows, but I'm not even sure if I knew it happened... 😬

A little more detail would be appreciated. What specifically is this SP fixing? And why the sudden release after just a week? I’d really value any insight you guys could share. Cheers to all of you, good people. 👍

A little more intel would be appreciated. What exactly is the SP fixing? Why did they push it out so fast? I'd appreciate any info you guys have. Cheers, good people. 👍

The beta dropped mid-July, RC at the end of November, and the final version is expected in Q1 2011.

What would that actually entail in practice...

thanks for the heads-up!👍

The RC is out now, with the official release slated for early 2011. On top of all the standard updates, security patches, and whatnot, the biggest headline is definitely going to be Internet Explorer 9!

Every single update we've seen up until now has been under 200MB, so where on earth is all this extra weight coming from?? How does a service pack jump to 500MB for 32-bit or hit 800MB for 64-bit? Or am I just completely missing something here?
Basically, these file sizes and weights just don't add up at all to me.

The math just isn't adding up for me.

I usually see it hovering around 500MB whenever I run a manual update once a month.👍

Look, you don't need to be sitting there on pins and needles waiting for the SP1 release. Just keep an eye on Windows Update and stay current. That's enough.

If you believe what you're hearing... SourceJust so you know, Internet Explorer 9 doesn't even require SP1.

Will people actually need Windows 7 Service Pack 1 once Microsoft finally drops Internet Explorer 9?

Look, here's the deal: Internet Explorer 9 works on both Windows 7 RTM and Windows 7 with Service Pack 1. If you're running the base Windows 7 RTM, the IE9 installer has to pull in extra OS components to make everything work. However, if you've already got Windows 7 SP1 sitting there, those components are already baked into the system. Because they're already present, you don't need to reinstall them, which means you can skip the reboot after installing Internet Explorer 9 on a system with Windows 7 SP1. Simple as that.

I just finished setting up a fresh install of Windows 7, and right out of the gate, I pulled down about fifty-something updates totaling maybe 150 or 160MB. If I recall correctly, there was even more stuff—maybe another 340 or 350MB worth of individual updates floating around—but hey, if you say so, you probably know better than I do. 👍

Let me get this straight—I’ve already burned through 65 updates with the American pack installed, excluding 033. Right after the initial install, I had about 57 updates pop up, totaling somewhere around 153 to 180MB—or at least, that's what I recall. Now, these last 8 updates alone? They're pushing close to 500MB. For God's sake, that's ridiculous. But whatever, it is what it is.
I only run updates for Windows, and I have absolutely no clue where they're pulling 500MB from.

I've got exactly 65 updates done so far including the US language pack without the 033. The first batch was 57 updates right after installation, maybe 153-180MB, I don't remember the exact number. Out of these last 8 updates, there isn't even 500MB total. Dammit, oh well, whatever.
I only run updates for Windows and have no clue where 500MB would come from.

I've updated everything except for one thing. 😁
And it wasn't the language pack; it's roughly 500MB, but spread out over a longer period.
Last night I did a clean Windows install, and my very first update haul was 41 updates totaling 116MB, excluding the US language pack. 🙂

Question for everyone.

Like I mentioned last night, I wiped my C: drive and did a fresh Windows install.
But now I've hit a snag—I can't get into Ubuntu (which is sitting on the other partition). Before, I used to have that option when I booted up where I could choose between Windows 7 or Ubuntu.
Now, it just boots straight into Windows. No menu, no choice, nothing.
How do I fix this?

Thanks. 🙂

I've run into one snag, though: I can't get into Ubuntu (which is sitting on a different partition). Before, I always had the menu pop up at startup letting me choose between Windows 7 or Ubuntu.
Now, it just boots straight into Windows without giving me any kind of choice.
How do I fix this?

Thanks.🙂

The Windows install messed up the Master Boot Record.

I really think we should give this a shot! It feels like one of those moments where taking a leap of faith could lead to something truly great. Let's see where this goes! kaže:
If you can believe it! SourceJust a quick heads-up for anyone wondering: you don't actually need Windows 7 service pack 1 to run Internet Explorer 9!

Will you need Windows 7 service pack 1 once Microsoft finally drops Internet Explorer 9?

Actually, it’s pretty straightforward! Internet Explorer 9 is compatible with both Windows 7 RTM and Windows 7 with service pack 1. Think of it like upgrading a car's engine. If you're starting with the base Windows 7 RTM model, installing Internet Explorer 9 is like adding those extra performance parts right then and there—it bundles everything you need into one go. However, if you’ve already upgraded to Windows 7 SP1, it’s like having those high-performance parts pre-installed under the hood! Since all those necessary components are already sitting there waiting for you, Internet Explorer 9 just plugs right in without needing to add anything new. Because of that, you won't even need to deal with a pesky system reboot if you're running Windows 7 SP1. It's a much smoother ride!

Nobody is actually saying that Internet Explorer 9 requires SP1 to work—it’s just that Internet Explorer 9 is going to be bundled right along with SP1!

Man, where on earth did you read that? It clearly states that if you aren't running Windows 7 SP1, you'll have to install extra components for IE9 and deal with a reboot. But if you already have Windows 7 SP1 installed, those components are already sitting there waiting for you, so you can get IE9 up and running without having to restart the whole system.

I suppose I should have expected this kind of nonsense from you... The user says:
So, what I'm saying is that you don't necessarily need to be obsessing over the exact moment the SP1 release drops; it’s more than enough to just stay on top of things by running Windows Update regularly...

If you're actually inclined to believe what people are saying... SourceIt turns out that Internet Explorer 9 doesn't actually require SP1...

When Microsoft finally rolls out Internet Explorer 9, I can't help but wonder if they're going to make Windows 7 service pack 1 a mandatory requirement for the installation...

Let’s get this straight once and for all. Internet Explorer 9 is compatible with any system running either Windows 7 RTM or Windows 7 with service pack 1... However, the actual process differs depending on which version you are currently utilizing. If you happen to be running Windows 7 RTM, the installation of Internet Explorer 9 will bundle several necessary operating system components to make everything functional. On the other hand, if your machine is already running Windows 7 SP1, those specific components are already baked into the OS, meaning they don't need to be added again during the setup. Consequently, because those files are already sitting there waiting, you won't actually need to reboot your computer when installing Internet Explorer 9 on a system that already has Windows 7 SP1...

My Windows is always up to date anyway, so I was really just curious to see what they’re actually fixing or adding with this service pack... Thanks for the info...👍

Don't sweat it—it'll come pre-packaged with SP1!

how do I translate this whole page into English using Opera

Is there some other translator out there similar to Google Translate that can handle an entire webpage? Like, I just paste the URL and it spits back a new link to the exact same site, but translated? Does anything like that even exist? 👍

It’s just not working. Maybe it's an issue with Opera or maybe the site itself is just being difficult.

Whatever, I'll just paste the link into Internet Explorer and try running it through Google Translate instead. 🙂

Turns out it really is the website... can't get it translated at all. Just getting that "Sorry, we can't translate this page" message from Google Translate. What a joke.

Hello everyone. Let's get something straight: a Service Pack isn't just a collection of previous updates. It introduces entirely new features, optimizations, and refinements. Depending on what's being added, the size can vary wildly—that’s precisely why it’s called a Service Pack and not just a "roll-up."

In short, we're looking at faster boot times, improved shutdown speeds, better system stability, extended battery life, and so on.
These are all standard improvements; I really don't see why anyone is acting surprised.
