Did you uncheck the box that says "On resume, display logon screen"? (I can't remember the exact wording in the American version)

Did you end up unchecking that box for "On resume, display logon screen"? I can't quite remember what the exact wording was on my version of the OS...

Yeah, I did... though if I recall correctly, I don't think I ever had that box checked in the first place...

In the advanced settings for that custom power plan, you'll need to Disable the "Require a password on wakeup" option. Set it to

If you head into the advanced settings for that custom power plan, you should be able to find the option to "Require a password on wakeup" and just set it to "No"...

But then it just kicks back on, and instead of showing me the log off screen, it just drops me right back into Windows immediately, almost like I didn't even do anything at all...
I think I'll just wait until I have a bit of free time to run a deep scan using every single antivirus tool I've got installed, and maybe then I'll see if things settle down... because I haven't touched any of those settings myself, yet this issue just popped up out of nowhere...

Hey everyone

I'm looking for some ideas on how to fix this issue

Whenever I boot up my laptop (an Acer Aspire), everything works fine until I try to open any web browser—like Google Chrome or Opera. Once I do that, I can't launch any other programs at all. I guess I'm wondering if anyone else has dealt with something like this? I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate, and I already ran a scan with Malwarebytes, but it didn't find anything.
Thanks for any help

Does any kind of dialog box pop up when you do that? 🤔

For the past couple of days, I’ve been dealing with this incredibly frustrating issue where absolutely nothing will launch. It doesn't even matter if I'm trying to open a web browser or any other software—nothing. I can pull up Task Manager and see the process sitting there, hogging about 60-64KB of RAM, but the actual application just refuses to manifest on my screen. No window, no nothing. The only way to get things moving again is a full system restart, which fixes everything temporarily, but then the cycle repeats. I haven't dug too deep into the root cause yet, but I'm stuck. I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate with Service Pack 1. I already ran scans with both Malwarebytes and SAS, and they came up completely clean. There isn't even a single error pop-up or notification; the program simply fails to execute. If I go through the Start menu or navigate directly to the folder, it's the same story. It feels like a fundamental issue with how .exe files are being triggered, but here's the weird part: if I can manage to trigger an action within a browser that forces a launch, it works, but when I try to do it normally, it fails. It's like the execution logic is totally broken during those periods. 👎

Hey
do all games actually run on Windows 7?
and do I really need to install DirectX?

Which ones? Windows 7, specifically with Service Pack 1, comes with DirectX 11 pre-installed, and here you can check out the full list of supported games.

So, what you're telling me is that those older titles just won't run at all?

How much older? Give them a shot and see if you can find them here. 🙂

Thanks a ton!
I finally tracked it down.
So, does anyone actually have a version of Alcohol 120 that won't completely tank when you try to run it on Windows 7??

Alcohol 120 is Windows 7 certified, 🤷 what exactly did you think? 🙄

So, about 4.5 months ago, I was running Windows 7, and my copy of Alcohol 120 just wouldn't play nice—it felt like the installation was totally bunk, or maybe I just couldn't get it to take. Same deal with Nero 7, too. It was just a complete mess.

I actually tried using some Alcohol 120 for Windows 7 once, and honestly, it was a total bust. It kept demanding a system restart right in the middle of the installation, and once I did that, it just completely stalled out. On the other hand, Daemon Tools works like a charm without any of those headaches.

Just install DirectX. Short and sweet. That's all you need to know.👍

Click

I'm running stuff from February 2010, but honestly, I don't game that much anyway—this version is newer.

Alex Barnes4 said:1. whenever I try to put my computer to sleep, the screen goes dark like it's shutting down, but then something immediately triggers it back awake, almost like I just logged off or something... I can't seem to get it to stay in sleep mode anymore.

Oh man, I actually found the fix 👋 so I figured I'd post it here just in case anyone else runs into this exact same headache...
Basically, my mouse stopped working properly, so I switched it over to a USB connection, and ever since then, my Windows machine just refuses to go into sleep mode... I was poking around online for a bit and stumbled upon this solution:

It’s possible that a piece of hardware is keeping your computer awake. Usually, things like USB flash drives or USB mice are the main culprits that wake a system up unexpectedly. You might want to check if you have the latest driver versions installed for all your peripherals. You can find more details under the Driver Update section: recommended links.
Preventing devices from waking your computer

Open the Device Manager by clicking the Start button, then head over to the Control Panel, select System and Security, and from within the System options, click on Device Manager. You'll need administrator permissions for this—so if a prompt pops up asking for an admin password or confirmation, just go ahead and enter it or approve it.

Find the specific hardware category for the device you want to stop from waking the PC and double-click its name.

Under the Power Management tab, simply uncheck the box that says "Allow this device to wake the computer."

Click OK.

I did exactly that for my mouse, and now everything is back to normal and it sleeps just fine again...

They work just fine—even the stuff from the Windows 95 era
you just have to toggle that compatibility mode setting

I am currently running Windows XP on my desktop setup, while my laptop is stuck running Vista. To be perfectly honest, I am feeling quite let down by Vista; it seems to be causing me an endless stream of headaches! It really makes one wonder, though—is Windows 7 actually a significant leap forward compared to Vista? I am particularly concerned about video codec compatibility, because on Vista, I can never seem to get all my codecs working properly, regardless of whether I'm dealing with AVI or MKV formats. On top of that, I run into constant friction when trying to use programs like Subtitle Workshop. Everything runs so smoothly on my XP machine without any of these frustrations! So, I find myself asking: should I take the plunge and install the new OS this week, or am I just inviting the same old nightmare of Vista-style glitches to happen all over again?
