Most of the time, you’re supposed to run the setup without the printer connected at all, and then you just plug it in right when the installer tells you to, exactly like how you described it happening...

Try uninstalling whatever Epson software you currently have via the Control Panel (Add/Remove Programs), then unplug the printer entirely, reboot your PC, and start the installation from scratch—only plugging the printer back in when the program specifically prompts you to do so!

alright I'll give that a shot, thanks. but here's the thing, when I actually have the printer turned on, it just throws an error saying "driver package cannot be installed"... so then I turn it off and start the install, and it gets to the part where it says the driver will be installed and shows me that picture telling me to turn the printer on, so I do exactly what it asks but it just won't automatically find the damn thing. there's a Manual option but that's apparently only if I'm on a network or something... but yeah, I'll try what you suggested. thanks.

Did you try plugging it into a different USB port???
Maybe see what it says when you click that link.

So, I just finished installing Windows 7, plugged in my USB drive, and now some of my files are showing up as totally empty? I moved all my photos and docs onto the thumb drive before the install to make sure they wouldn't get wiped out—I had no clue I was supposed to format it first, but hey, mistakes happen, right? Anyway, how do I actually get those files back or even just make them show up instead of these blank icons?

Is it possible you just saved a shortcut by mistake?

Just try clicking that link and see what kind of error pops up.

I've tried everything and still nothing... honestly, I'm just gonna roll back to Windows XP and call it a day. 🙂 thanks anyway.

All because of one single driver? Why not just back up all your precious files and wipe everything to reinstall Windows 7? 🙂

I already made the jump to Windows XP and got everything installed, and honestly, I didn't bother making any backups because there wasn't anything worth saving anyway... lol. Oh yeah, and screw this entire week, because not a single standard driver would work on my old setup, whereas on XP, they all installed instantly... 🙂

Some of the files actually have content, but then others are totally empty—like, I see some images appearing fine, while others just won't show up at all. Honestly, I have no clue why this is happening...

That's too bad 😢 I think you gave up a bit too early.
I find it hard to believe those driver issues couldn't be fixed on Windows 7.
Good luck with XP, though it feels like taking two steps backward to me. 🙂

So, what actually happens if I hit "check now" on a drive with a USB stick plugged in and then the connection cuts out halfway through? Now some of my files won't even open... I'm honestly freaking out because everything on there is super important—like, life-or-death kind of important.

I just can't wrap my head around how those driver issues couldn't be fixed on Windows 7.
Good luck with XP, though... personally, feels like taking two massive steps backward into the Stone Age... 🙂

ugh, man, what can you even do at this point? I tried everything and nothing works. It’s just total garbage, honestly... 🙂

If he didn't make the jump to the new OS last week, there’s no reason he should be doing it now, honestly.

Look, you can't blame the OS for driver issues—that's on the manufacturers. I can't even find drivers for my old Samsung d900 from anyone running Windows 7, but I'm certainly not going to downgrade all the way back to Windows XP just because of one device.

Think about it: we had tons of phones after the Samsung era, so what are we going to do, provide tech support for every single one? If the thing still works perfectly fine today, I don't see any reason to go out and buy the latest model. But hey, I guess that's just the lesson here—they basically force your hand to upgrade to a newer phone. Yeah, I get it.

I think I get what you're asking, I guess.
The "check now" tool basically scans for errors and tries to fix them.
If it's cutting out mid-way, your thumb drive might be dying.
Maybe try plugging it into a different PC?
If that doesn't work and the files are a big deal, you could probably just Google "USB flash drive recovery." There's a bunch of software out there—some are free, others cost a bit. 🙂

Just wanted to pick your brain on something else. So, my GPU supports DirectX 11, but I’m running Windows XP right now—which obviously means I'm stuck with just DirectX 9.0c... so if I want my games to actually run smooth, which OS should I be looking at? Is it better to stick with XP and DirectX 9.0c, or jump over to an OS that handles DirectX 11? I mean, obviously you need a decent rig to handle DirectX 11 properly, but that shouldn't be an issue for my setup... just curious what you guys think??

It’ll run better on DirectX 11—assuming the game actually supports it, obviously—but that really just depends on how the devs handled things. You don't necessarily need a beefier rig, you just need an operating system that actually supports DirectX 11, and the same logic applies to your graphics card.

Just wanted to point out that I finally got Windows 7 Home Premium installed and my printer is actually working now 😁 and if anyone else is struggling and needs a link to that software that lets you utilize all 4GB of RAM on a 32-bit OS, just shoot me a PM. I'll send the link over to you. 🙂 thanks again everyone. if things start acting up again, I'll be back to ask about this whole week thing :'D

No software on earth is going to bridge the gap and allow an x86 OS to actually utilize all 4 gigs of RAM.
