Now, Revo offers quite a few features during that 30-day trial period, but it won't actually let you perform the deletion. I even tried using their "hunter mode," but honestly? It started asking for permission to wipe out system files. That felt a bit too risky for me.
I'm really not sure how the installation ended up being configured... well, I suppose it doesn't matter much for now. I'll just leave things as they are until I make a final call on whether to do a clean reinstall of Windows 7 or wait for this new build currently in development.

The game itself was installed from a disc. It spent about three or four hours running updates, then it kept trying to pull more updates, and more, and more... eventually, I just lost patience, gave up, and hit uninstall. And ever since then, everything has been acting up.

I personally rely on Advanced SystemCare, and I have never encountered a single issue with it...

I guess nobody really knows how this was installed in the first place, but whatever, I'll just leave it alone until I decide whether to reinstall Windows 7 or wait for this new version currently in development.

The game was installed from a disc, and after updating for maybe 3 or 4 hours, it kept asking for more updates indefinitely. I eventually gave up and uninstalled it, and that's when things went sideways.

If you actually know what you're doing, you can try doing it manually through the "Registry":

Type regedit into Run, hit OK, and the "Registry editor" will open. Use Ctrl + f to bring up the Find window and type in (what you want to find and scrub from your PC, (game name) ) and hit Find next. Once it highlights the first instance in the right-hand pane, hit Delete. Then, hit F3 to keep searching for the next part of (that), and again, once it shows up in the right pane, hit Delete, then F3, and just keep going until you've cleared (it) out of the registry.

If you aren't entirely sure about this, maybe have someone who knows their way around a computer handle it for you. 🙂

Thanks for the tip, I managed to wipe it out using the Registry editor.

I recently picked up a new Dell Inspiron from Best Buy. However, when I try to power it on, Windows won't load. Instead, I just get this plain black screen filled with some cryptic text, followed by a prompt to enter the date and time. Once I provide those, it drops me into a command line at C:/, but anything I type results in a "Wrong command" error. I tried booting from a Windows 7 DVD to resolve this, but when the installation process starts, it tells me it can't find the DVD/CD driver :S. This is preventing me from proceeding with the setup entirely. I suppose I'm not quite sure what the issue might be. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

The CD/DVD drive doesn't even have a driver. Take that thing back to the store and tell them to fix their act—they definitely knew what they were doing when they took your money.

Well this, it clearly says right there that you have FreeDOS running; that's just that black screen with the C:/ prompt
.
If you want to get Windows 7 installed, you probably need to go into the BIOS first (I think it's the F2 key) and make sure the DVD drive is set as a bootable device. Maybe check the manual. 🙂

Well, I guess there was a slight change tonight—I found an issue with the RAM on my troubleshooting list.
Strange, because that wasn't there this morning...
🙂

Anyway, Thomas Hernandez21—two heads are better than one, right? What’s your take?
Should I try reseating the sticks, blowing them out, maybe swapping their slots... or something else?

Define what you mean by "freezing." Is it a total freeze where the mouse won't move, or does the screen just go black? Because if the cursor is stuck, it's probably a memory issue (either the disk or maybe the RAM).

I've got a quick question for you guys.
It’s not strictly about Windows 7 anymore—but since I see plenty of people online, I figured I’d ask.
So, I’m running Windows 7 right now, and I want to get Windows XP set up on VirtualBox. If I download something while using the XP instance, is there a way to move that file over to my Windows 7 setup?

No, nothing goes black—the screen just freezes.
It doesn't respond to anything; the cursor just locks up and that's it.
A hard reboot is the only fix, followed by "Windows normally".
Event Viewer reports a "kernel-code 41" error, which isn't particularly helpful...
I've scoured the web for answers and even picked the brains of some friends from MIT... Just ideas, really, but nothing has worked yet.
Perhaps there are ghosts in the machine? 😁
By the way, I uninstalled everything related to Realtek and everything seems fine now for the last two days... I guess I'm just using the process of elimination, so we'll see...

The Event Viewer shows a "kernel-code 41" error, which is pretty vague.
I've already scoured the web for this and picked the brains of some buddies from my CS major... Just an idea, obviously, but still nothing.

Alright, if this keeps happening, grab a Hiren's boot CD, burn it, and boot the PC from it. Run memtest86+ (let it run for at least 4 hours) and look through the hard disk tools for a program called mhdd (I think it's version 4.6) and use that to scan the drive (once you pick the drive, hit F4 twice to start the scan). 🙂

If anything shows up red in memtest or an X appears in mhdd, then we're in trouble. 😁

Pff, I’ve never been a fan of Hiren... Disgusting.
I will keep your advice in mind, should this continue.
By the way, nothing on Windows XP ever came close to this. And I’ve set up dozens of machines, fixing countless others along the way.
Perhaps that is why I feel like such an idiot.

Hiren's is fine, it has everything you need. 😁 It's probably best to make sure the hardware isn't the issue before you start poking around. 🙂

Can you actually answer my question?

Yeah, you can. 🙂 If you download something onto a virtual Windows XP instance, you can move it over to the host machine without any issues. 🙂 It's been a while since I messed with VMs, but last time I moved stuff from VirtualBox to my main OS, I just used the VirtualBox network and that was that. Maybe things changed in recent versions—drag and drop might work now. But the point is, it's doable. No big deal.👍

What does "move it over" actually mean in this context?

Copy or Cut.
I just want to be able to use files on Windows 7—say, I download a movie on an old XP machine and then watch it over on my Windows 7 setup. Is that clear enough for everyone?

It likely means copying the files over to Windows 7 so you don't have to deal with the headache of running a virtual machine.

If memory serves me correctly, a standard copy-and-paste operation should be sufficient for the task.

Nicholas Martin80 said:Yeah, probably just copy it over to Windows 7—saves you from having to fire up a virtual machine.

If I recall correctly—and my memory isn't *that* bad—a simple copy/paste should do the trick.

That’s exactly what I’m looking for. So it works!
Thanks!

Might be a dumb question, but why would you even bother downloading something (like a movie) in an XP virtual machine just to move it over to Windows 7 to actually watch it? Wouldn't it be way easier to just download it directly onto Windows 7?

The only reason would be if you're hitting up sketchy websites and want that XP virtual machine to act as a sort of sandbox.

They’re probably trying to use some outdated download manager that just doesn't play nice with Windows 7.
You'll actually need to go into your VirtualBox settings for that VM and set up a Shared folder, then mount it inside the virtual machine. Standard copy-paste isn't really an option here—what you have to do is copy-paste into that Shared folder within the virtual environment, and then grab it from there on your host machine to wherever you want it to go.
