Hey, does anyone know what I should expect to pay for Windows 7, maybe the Home Premium version (retail; just looking to get it installed on my home PC)? I swung by a local shop earlier and they were asking something like $250, which felt a bit steep, so I was wondering if there's a better deal out there or any specific spots in New York City where I can snag one for less? Thanks!

Home Premium retail is about $1,600—$600, while the Professional retail version goes for $2,300 or more. These are all the English versions 🙂.

I finally upgraded my mom's old laptop from Windows Starter to Windows Ultimate.
It feels like a total night and day difference since everything is running way smoother now.🤷

I’m still planning on doing my own install via a USB drive—the BIOS gives me that option😉 but I'm honestly a bit worried about whether Windows 7 can even handle my poor little machine.

The specs are pretty rough:
it's rocking 512MB of RAM and an 80GB hard drive, and the thing is already seven years old.😁

Do you think it'll actually work?

So, I'm running an Intel Athlon(tm) 145 clocked at 2.80 GHz paired with 8GB of RAM,
running on a 64-bit version of Windows 7 Ultimate.
Here’s my dilemma: why is my CPU Usage utility reporting a constant 100% load, yet I'm only seeing 1971MB of RAM being utilized (a measly 27%) while I've still got 5451MB just sitting there idle (check out the screenshot!)?🙂
Shouldn't the system be tapping into more of that available RAM instead of just letting it sit there!?🤷

It really isn't going to work, and honestly, I wouldn't recommend trying it because the specs are just way too weak.☕
The hard drive will struggle enough, but the real bottleneck is definitely that tiny bit of RAM you have.

for the drive, though you do have a bit of RAM available.

I agree. The RAM is the bottleneck here. I struggled with 1GB, but 2GB is actually decent.

That’s an easy fix for your hard drive, sure, but you're running dangerously low on RAM.

I'm with you on that. It’s not like Windows is the only thing eating up all your RAM...
And you don't just want to have nothing but Windows installed, staring at it like it's the only thing in the world?

Ryan Watson22 said:I'm signing off on this one. RAM is absolutely the bottleneck here. Personally, I was hitting a wall with just 1GB, but once I bumped it up to 2GB, everything finally started running smoothly.

I’m already starting to feel the squeeze on that 2GB of RAM. Every single new software release is more demanding than the last; programs keep evolving and pushing the envelope, while my hardware is just sitting here stuck in the past. It’s a losing battle.

Why on earth shouldn't I be using more RAM!?🤷

Why?? The CPU has always been the most heavily taxed part of the process for me too, and I’m running a quad-core at 3.0GHz.

I'm posting here because I see it’s possible to perform a full upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8 Pro—meaning everything stays intact, including all my programs, settings, and files.

Is it actually smart to pull the trigger on this if my current setup is running perfectly fine? Has anyone here actually gone through with it? Or am I better off just staying right where I am and not tempting fate??

Honestly, it’s unbelievable how I always end up being tempted to make such stupid decisions...

Maybe I should just leave myself alone for a bit. 😁

Man, I don't know why I always feel the urge to mess with stuff and cause problems...

Maybe I should just leave things alone for a bit. 😁

If you have some space on another partition, you could make a backup image (maybe using Acronis True Image). Then go ahead with the upgrade to 8, and if things go sideways or you just hate it, you can use an Acronis bootable CD to restore everything back to the image you made. 🙂

Thanks for all the help, everyone.

I definitely picked up a lot from that PDF.👍

I guess I’ll just go ahead and slap Windows XP on it; I was originally thinking about sticking with Windows 7 just because the install seemed like less of a headache.

Since my new rig is arriving in a few days anyway, this old machine is basically just going to be a glorified storage drive for photos and docs, but it really needs a total wipe since it's acting buggy and feels totally cluttered.

To be honest, I'm a little nervous it won't even survive the installation process—it actually overheated and shut itself down right when I tried to jump into the BIOS.

The new one is definitely getting Windows Ultimate😁.

By the way, does anyone know what the actual deal is with the difference between 32-bit and 64-bit versions?

32-bit versions of Windows hit a wall at 3.5 GB of RAM, whereas the 64-bit stuff just keeps going. Honestly, if you've got 4 GB or more under the hood, you're definitely better off sticking with 64-bit.

That isn't the only distinction at play here.
In reality, that 4GB limit is simply a side effect of the fact that 2 to the power of 32 equals 4GB, meaning the processor can't address more than 4GB. The memory might physically be there, but there just aren't enough addresses to reach it.

If my memory serves me right, there are certain chipsets and 32-bit processors out there that actually support up to 8GB.

Beyond the addressing issue—and the resulting impossibility of accessing more than 2^32 addresses (4GB)—the difference lies in how 64-bit processors "naturally" handle much larger numbers, specifically 2^64. This means that, for instance, adding two large numbers (or any calculation where the result exceeds 2^32) is processed faster on a 64-bit processor.

There is more to it, of course, but...

Man, Matthew Young35, you're getting way too deep into the weeds for me with all this detail 😵

Ryan Watson22 said:Why though?? For me, the CPU has always been the biggest bottleneck during rendering, even with my quad-core running at 3.0GHz.

I'm just asking because I see it happening all the time on my end, especially when there's another program running in the background.
Best regards!

Is there any truth to what I've been reading? Apparently, Windows 7 Ultimate is supposedly faster than Home Premium... I'm asking because I'm stuck with this frustrating laptop. It's got an Intel Core i7 8GB 2GB Graphics, but the hard drive is only spinning at 5400rpm. I guess you could say that might be "choking" the performance?

The machine would certainly feel snappier if it had a 7200rpm drive, though you’d likely notice the extra noise and heat coming from the chassis, and honestly, if your day-to-day routine just involves standard tasks, you probably wouldn't even register the difference much anyway.

I was actually going to post a question this morning about why some people find it weird or even funny that I want to buy Windows 7, but then I saw the news... two guys just got arrested for downloading stuff from the internet...

Just standard stuff, really—programming, working in Visual Studio 2010, Java... I guess it’s hard to say exactly how much of a resource hog that actually is... but that's what she does...

It honestly feels like a defeat that most laptops over here require you to buy Windows separately instead of having it pre-installed. It's frustrating because in places like Italy, for instance, every single laptop comes with it already loaded...

@analoglynx37/">@@analoglynx37 ... honestly, what they were reporting on the news was just complete nonsense.
@wanderingbadger17/">@@wanderingbadger17 .... I wouldn't bother picking up a new HDD right now because you really won't notice any tangible difference... and as for laptops, some models support upgrades while others just don't.
