The card is a GeForce FX 5200. When I start the installation, the screen flickers halfway through, and then I get that error regarding WDDM—it's like it wants me to switch the display settings to standard or something. I've tried everything, but nothing seems to work...

It throws this error regarding WDDM, implying I need to switch my display settings to "standard" or something along those lines. I've tried every fix in the book, but absolutely nothing is working...

Give this specific advice a shot. Look for the second response in that thread.

That worked. I uninstalled that expert program, wiped the AMD software, rebooted the PC, updated the display drivers, and did one more reset. It’s working now. Thanks for the help!

I'm currently downloading Windows 7, and I was wondering which version I should actually install—the x64 or the x86? Does anyone know what the real difference is between them?

The difference is just 32 bits

So, just to be clear, is the x86 version generally the better way to go???

Man, is it really that hard for people to just use Google when they have a question like this?

If you're running a dual-core processor, obviously you should go with 64-bit.
If you don't have the bits, you'll just have to settle for x86 or 32-bit.
Personally, I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.

First off, the cheapest option, Windows 7 Starter, is pretty crippled. You can only run three apps at once, and you're stuck with limited screen resolution—it’s basically designed for those low-end netbooks. You also lose out on Aero and plenty of other features like Windows touch and Live thumbnail, even if it does keep the updated taskbar.

The Home Basic version doesn't have those application limits, includes Live thumbnail, and offers decent networking support. If you step up to Home Premium, you get everything mentioned above, plus the Aero look, multi-touch support, and Windows Media Center enhancements.

As for the Professional version, think of it as Home Premium but with backup capabilities, remote desktop host functionality, and a few other minor extras. For those looking at Windows 7 Business or Ultimate, you're getting the heavy hitters: BitLocker, DirectAccess, AppLocker, and the ability to boot from a virtual device.

So what, if I've got a quad-core processor, am I stuck with x86?

I seem to have run into a bit of a predicament. My Windows 7 system isn't recognizing my sound card—though, to be precise, it isn't a discrete card, but rather the integrated audio component on my motherboard. I haven't been able to identify the specific hardware because DXDiag remains silent on the matter, and even Everest fails to surface any information. Does anyone happen to have a solution for this?
Furthermore, I noticed something peculiar in DXDiag regarding DirectX 11; it claims support, yet I am running an NVIDIA GeForce with only 256MB of VRAM. I find myself somewhat perplexed—is it simply reporting that the software is installed regardless of whether my hardware can actually handle it, or am I missing something fundamental here?

Olivia Watson46 said:We have a major issue here! My Windows 7 system isn't recognizing my sound card (well, technically it's integrated onto the motherboard, so let's call it that)... I have no idea what model it is because DXDiag doesn't list it, and even Everest can't find it ... does anyone actually have a solution for this...??
And one more thing—DXDiag claims I have DirectX 11, but I'm running an ATI 9600 xt 256mb graphics card... now I'm genuinely confused, wtfis it actually DirectX 11, or is that just the software version installedand totally irrelevant since my hardware doesn't support it? I just don't get it...

Well, what does your Device Manager say? Is it listed there at all? If it’s missing entirely, you need to dive into your BIOS > Sound on board (or something similar) > Enable!

DirectX 11 is essentially software and a core component of Windows 7, so that's simply how it reports itself. How much actual performance your specific card can squeeze out of it depends entirely on its own capabilities and the rest of your hardware setup.
My laptop shows the same thing with its integrated Intel 3100 gfx, 😁
