Just download Hiren's boot CD. Once you have it, burn it as an image, leave it in the drive, restart the computer, and boot from the CD. Under the disk testing tools, find your specific drive manufacturer and run a long test if one is available.

If that passes, then... try flashing the BIOS. If that doesn't solve it either, my only remaining thought is a driver issue... perhaps try installing a different version, maybe an older one.

Okay, I'll give all of that a shot tonight when I get home! Regarding drivers, when I installed Windows 7, I didn't actually have to install any drivers because everything—sound, network, and so on—worked perfectly out of the box. I only installed the ATI CCC, nothing else.

Quick question regarding this new firewall setup. They really should have kept it simple like it was back in Windows XP—just hit properties and add them to a blacklist. How am I supposed to block specific programs from making a connection here?

Do I go through Advanced settings and look at inbound or outbound rules? My English tells me it should be outbound, but I see some stuff in the inbound list that I don't want trying to connect—specifically a game, whereas the inbound list seems to just be standard Windows programs. So, maybe that's actually what I need, or maybe I'm totally off base 😬? Either way, is this where you do it, right-click and select block connection?

Hey, I need some help here. I'm a total newbie at this stuff. A buddy of mine just installed Windows 7 on my rig; he got the whole thing running, but for some reason, there's zero sound. I'm running an ASUS P4V800D-X motherboard.
Windows XP SP2
Intel Celeron CPU 2.93GHz, 1.5GB RAM
Audio: AD1888 SoundMAX 6-channel audio CODEC. Don't get mad if I missed any details—if you guys need more info, just let me know.
Thanks in advance for the help.

You might want to try installing that Windows XP audio driver on Windows 7 using Compatibility mode:

Here’s the deal—open up the file you downloaded (if it’s in a zip or rar format, just extract it to your hard drive first) and find the specific driver you need to install (.exe file). Right-click it and go to Properties > Compatibility > Compatibility mode. Check the box that says "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" and then pick either Windows Vista or XP from the dropdown menu > Apply > OK, and that should be about it.

Hey everyone, I could really use some help here if anyone knows the secret!!!
Does anyone happen to know how to get my menu looking exactly like the one in this photo? I'm talking about those floating icons—it doesn't even matter if they're hanging out at the top or bottom of the screen, I just want that specific look.
Is this some kind of cool little gadget, or maybe a specific app or program you download to make it happen?
Thanks a bunch! 👍

Not gonna work in the standard Windows interface at all. I guess you might have some luck trying it with ObjectDock instead.

🙏So here’s the deal, folks. My kid installed Windows 7 yesterday and everything seems to be running fine, but he threw it all onto
just one partition. I was wondering if there's any way to set up an XP mode on a separate partition to act as a secure machine
instead. Right now, the disk management shows unallocated space and then c: at 149gb 🙄

Whenever I open photos in my browser, everything looks weirdly tinted—the background turns this yellowish color, and even the actual images look like I'm peering through yellow-tinted glasses. It’s all just washed out in yellow. Does anyone know how to fix this? Thanks in advance!🤷

Here's how I can help you out, buddy. My kid installed Windows 7 on my rig yesterday
and now I'm dealing with a massive headache. If I roll the PC back to its previous state, everything’s fine, but if you want a real fix... look at the bottom right corner of your screen, by the clock. See that little flag icon? Read up on system restores.☕

Work on your punctuation, buddy. 🙂

What exactly is a "secure computer"? Just leave that 100MB alone; Windows 7 creates that during installation as the system reserved partition.

So, like the thread says, I picked up a laptop recently and loaded up Windows 7 x64 on it.
Here’s what I'm running:
Intel Core 2 duo P8700 2.5 GHz, 3MB L2
4 GB DDR3
500 GB HDD 5400 rpm
Nvidia GeForce GTX 260 m

After a little while, I noticed something weird. When I'm browsing the web or reading PDFs, the computer starts choking—maybe it's trying to cache everything at once? If I leave a document open to do something else and then come back to it, it happens every single time...
For example...
I'm using AutoCAD 2010 and it feels pretty sluggish. My buddies at college have half the RAM and much weaker processors than me, yet AutoCAD runs perfectly smooth on their machines without any hiccups...
The thing is, while I'm working, I have to check some registers for my classes, so I'll pop open a PDF. As soon as I start reading, the whole system just freezes up for a second. Like, if I grab the "hand tool" in Adobe Acrobat and try to pan through the doc, the machine stutters hard. It'll hit this half-second glitch where even my music cuts out before snapping back to normal, and then suddenly the PDF works fine again. But unfortunately, AutoCAD is still being a total pain...

Is this happening just because I'm running 64-bit Windows??

If you want to see the full specs for this laptop...

don't wanna clutter things up with a new thread...
how am I supposed to ditch the system reserved partition later?
once I get to installing Windows XP? (honestly have no clue how to delete a partition, anyone got a quick tip?)

So, here’s the situation: I’m running an Acer Aspire One netbook, which, as anyone who has spent time with these little things knows, is essentially shackled by its 1GB of RAM. Up until recently, it performed adequately enough, but lately, the machine has slowed to a crawl, and if you look at my resource monitor, the RAM usage is sitting right at that critical threshold where everything starts to choke. It’s currently running Windows 7 Ultimate, which—if I’m being honest—feels like trying to power a heavy-duty industrial generator with a single AA battery, though it managed to limp along without much complaint until now. I suspect I’ll need to go in and "execute" some background processes to free up some breathing room, but I haven't quite identified which culprits are draining the life out of it. If anyone has a practical solution or a way to slim this thing down, please let me know...

By secure computer, I meant the Windows 7 virtualization software.😛

The best move, at least if you ask me, is just throwing more RAM at the problem if your rig can even handle it... or just plug in a USB stick and wait for that little pop-up to appear asking what you want to do with it via auto play, then just go ahead and hit "speed up my system" to see if it actually does anything.

Why even bother touching that 100 MB System Reserved partition? It’s tiny.

If you really feel like you need to get rid of it, I guess you could just use a partitioning tool like Acronis Partition manager or maybe that free one, Easeus Partition master.
Easeus Partition master http://www.partition-tool.com/

If you're planning on doing a clean reinstall, Windows XP is going to ask you where you want to put things. I guess you could just wipe any partitions you don't need and set up a new one for the install. Just follow whatever prompts pop up while you're running the Windows XP setup.
