I'm going to give this another shot tonight. Thanks for all the help so far. 🙂

Maybe I should try updating my drivers before running MemTest? It'll be a quicker fix. 🙂 Then I can fire up a torrent and see if the crashes come back...

You can do it however you want, I guess. 🙂

So, what happens if I actually fail the test? Will upgrading to the latest version of Windows solve the issue?

No, you'll probably have to just buy new RAM.

Managed to wipe it and reinstall somehow

But now I'm stuck with a question. This machine used to run Windows 7 32-bit,
but I went ahead and put a 64-bit system on it (Windows 7)

Is that actually gonna cause issues? And what's the real deal with the difference between 32 and 64-bit anyway? My processor is just a dual core—is that gonna stress out the CPU or maybe the motherboard?

The computer won't even play any audio; it keeps nagging me for DirectX just so I can listen to music.
Do I really just need DirectX, or am I looking for specific sound card drivers meant for Windows 7 64

thanks
🤷

Please don't use all caps; it comes off as shouting on this forum. If you do it again, you're going to get a warning.

If you went ahead and installed the 64-bit version, just stick with it. It shouldn't be an issue,
though I guess you will need to install the audio driver specifically for Win7 64.

Look, if you already went ahead and installed the 64-bit version, just stick with it. It won't hurt anything,
you'll just need to track down an audio driver specifically for Windows 7 64.

Can you drop a link? Or is it just sitting there on Microsoft's site somewhere?

👍

My bad on the all caps thing, didn't realize. I'll fix my posts—already went back and cleaned up what I could. Won't happen again.

If that information isn't sitting right there on your motherboard manufacturer's website, then we're likely talking about specific sound card drivers. 🙂

It's an Asus board,

I was just scrolling through the Asus site... man, there are a million different drivers listed and I have zero clue which one actually matters 🙂
can someone help me out?

Am I supposed to grab the motherboard chipset stuff
or just the sound driver?

And how do I even figure out which specific motherboard I've got? Just boot the PC up and hope for the best, right?

What's the actual name for what I'm looking for?

thanks

Asus makes thousands of different motherboards, so you really need to specify which exact one you're running. If you aren't sure, I guess you could try checking with this little tool Everest home edition. 🙂

tried using that little app
I click on the motherboard entry and it just says "unknown"

So I actually opened up the PC case and saw this printed right on the board

asus
p5kpl-am in/roem/si

Is that the actual model number?
thanks

Quick question for the group... I picked up a Dell Studio 17 running Vista, but now that I've upgraded to Windows 7, I'm loving the OS but my Bluetooth is completely dead... any ideas on how to fix this?
Also, how do I actually grab the drivers and the dock from the Dell site when it identifies my machine by serial number, but since I don't have a genuine Windows license anymore, it won't let me download anything?

By the way, save yourselves the headache and don't buy a Dell; mine has been sitting in the repair shop three separate times, totaling about a month of downtime, and I just finished paying it off this month. 😢

Asus
P5KPL-AM IN/ROEM/SI

Is that the specific model name for the motherboard?
Thanks!

Right-click on Computer > Properties > Windows experience index > View and print detailed performance and system information.
That should give you a general overview of your PC specs and the motherboard (check those first two lines).
By the way, since you're on Windows 7, you can try going into the Device Manager, right-clicking the specific device you need a driver for, and selecting "Update Driver Software." It’s actually quite reliable compared to how things worked back in the XP days. Also, do you see any yellow exclamation marks appearing in the Device Manager?

First things first: you really need to sort out that licensing issue, otherwise it's just going to keep giving you grief.

I mean, I’m pretty sure I’m better off doing it this way because... honestly, who knows, maybe it's just better that way.

I mean, I think I’ve got some decent software on my Dell that I’d definitely throw on a new build if I could, because honestly, it’s pretty solid—except for that ObjectDock thing that’s been driving me absolutely insane lately.😕

Go ahead and head over to the Asus website. You'll want to look for drivers under Motherboard > Socket775, find your specific model, "P5KPL-AM IN/ROEM/SI," and hit Search. In the dropdown menu, select the OS as Windows 7 64 and grab the appropriate audio driver from there. 🙂

That'll give you the general rundown of your rig and motherboard (check those first two lines).
Otherwise, sometime this week you could try hitting Device Manager, right-clicking the specific device you need a driver for, and selecting update driver software. It actually works pretty decent most of the time, unlike back in the XP days. By the way, seeing any yellow exclamation points popping up in Device Manager?

I followed those steps and this is what shows up in the first few lines

processor -pentium(r) dual-core cpu e5200 @ 2.50ghz
memory(ram)-1,00gb
graphics -intel(r) g33/g31 expres chipset family(microsoft corporation -wddm 1.0)
The graphics card and hard drive are listed underneath

And regarding Device Manager, I tried that too, clicking on
sound, video and games controllers, right-click - update driver

But still... zero sound coming out of this thing. Nothing.

It doesn't necessarily have to be expensive, either. There's a ton of stuff online related to Windows... if you know what I mean.
Give RocketDock a shot.
You don't have to download drivers exclusively from the Dell website; they should be available elsewhere too.
Or, you could try some automated driver update tools, like driver Genius, driver Magic, or something similar.

Man, I already tried that exact thing and followed every single step
I ended up downloading a bunch of random drivers

But still? Zero sound coming out of this PC. Is it really that hard to find the right damn drivers?

I've tried everything under the sun, honestly have no clue what else to do here.
(The machine was running Windows 7 32 before this, and the audio worked fine back then)

I'm stuck. No solutions found.
Thanks.

Also, how am I supposed to grab drivers or the dock from Dell's site? It usually asks for a service tag to identify the machine, but since my Windows isn't technically "genuine" anymore, it won't let me download anything.

Give us the actual model number for that "Dell Studio 17." That 17 usually has four digits after it—just check the sticker on the bottom of the laptop. Also, you can definitely download drivers without entering a service tag. 🙂
