Man, I tried doing it that way once... just followed the instructions to a T. What happened?
So, I went ahead and downloaded a bunch of random drivers. Just... all sorts of junk. Honestly, what am I even doing?

Man, here I go again. No sound on my PC. Seriously, is it actually that much of a massive headache to just find the right damn drivers? Or am I just losing my mind?

I've tried everything under the sun. Seriously, I’m at a total loss here. What am I even supposed to do next?
So, I had Windows 7 32 on this rig before... and the audio drivers actually worked back then. Why's that? Who knows. Just one of those things, I guess.

I'm stuck. No clue. Honestly? I've got nothing.

So, I'm messing around with these motherboard audio drivers, right? And it got me thinking... do I actually need to go out of my way and pick some specific directory for these things, or am I just supposed to let them dump themselves into C:\Program Files and call it a day? Is there even a point in trying to be organized with this junk?

You just run the .exe setup file and they install themselves; you don't really have to specify anything manually. 🙂

That's exactly what I tried, but it didn't work.

I guess it's time to strip all those drivers off that link you sent me.
Maybe one will actually work... but honestly? Probably not.

If I can somehow get this thing dialed in, I'll let you know.
If it fails again, I'm back here. 🙂

Joshua Garcia3 said:Look, just give me the actual specific model number for that "Dell Studio 17"—that 17 has a four-digit identifier if you actually bother to read the sticker on the bottom of the laptop—and I can find a way to grab the drivers without having to mess around entering a serial number.🙂

Oh, thanks, the model is 1735... so what's my move?

Maybe just grab the driver meant for Windows Vista since there isn't one for Windows 7, then try running it through Compatibility mode.

Thomas Hernandez21 said:No, you're going to have to grab some new RAM

So, I ran MemTest last night—ran three full passes, which took just over two hours—and didn't see a single error. After that, I updated my network drivers (can't find any specific chipset ones on the manufacturer's site), then tried opening a torrent, and within ten minutes, I hit a Blue Screen of Death. 🤷Got any other ideas?

If you're getting a Blue Screen of Death only when uTorrent is running, then I really doubt it's a memory issue. If your RAM was actually shot, you'd be seeing that Blue Screen of Death all the time, especially whenever you try to run heavy stuff like AAA games.

This feels way more like a hiccup with your network card drivers or maybe some conflict with a firewall—are you running one right now?

I don't have a firewall running.
Honestly, I'm stumped. It's weird because I haven't added anything new to my laptop, moved any files, or changed a single thing lately that could trigger this. It just started popping up out of nowhere.

Wait, you don't even have an antivirus installed? Man, that’s definitely not a great move!

It’s totally possible the network driver is acting up—I ran into a super similar issue back when I was using Windows Vista, so maybe try swapping in a different driver and see what happens.

EDIT: Actually, it just hit me that it might be a hard drive issue! If you haven't really changed anything on the PC lately and then everything just crashes out of nowhere like this, you should probably run a check for bad sectors.

I've got McAfee Antivirus running. I think I'll try swapping in a different driver and see if that does the trick.

Norton Security

or maybe just this: Norton Security

which one's better?

😲 For what? 🙂

Now that you mention the drive, it hit me—the disk I use for all my movies is getting pretty cramped. I’ve only got about 15GB left out of 140GB, and I haven't had the energy to move those files over to an external hard drive yet. Could that be what's triggering this error?
Then again, I've definitely run low on space before and the torrenting worked just fine without any drama... I know that's not ideal, but sometimes I'm just too lazy to clear things out.

Even though, I mean, I've had way less space than that before and my torrents were running totally fine... I know it's not ideal, but man, I'm just too lazy to move everything over right now...

It shouldn't be an issue. Usually, it would just pop up a notification saying the drive is full and leave it at that.

EDIT: Checked the uTorrent forums:

We've examined the crash dump files for the latest version and noticed that the vast majority are caused by malware. Get an antivirus application (such as AVG free) and clean your system! You will most likely need to use LSPFix to repair your network connection after removing the malware. laf#.dll, t#.dll, ftp#.dll (# being an actual number, commonly 34), and gopher.dll are the most common ones.

McAfee Antivirus has a similar issue with its monitoring. To get around it, you can just add µTorrent to its exclusion list.

I also found these interesting tidbits—maybe you messed up some DLL files while trying to clean out those viruses.

Can someone walk me through this?
What's the deal with
socket-775

Do I have to type that in every single time I'm looking for drivers for any Asus motherboard, or just for my specific one?
p5kpl-am in/roem/si

And is there such a thing as some kind of universal driver for all those Asus DDR2 motherboards?

Thanks.

what does
socket 775 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGA_775
actually mean? Do I need to include that whenever I'm hunting for drivers for any Asus motherboard, or just for my specific one, the
P5KPL-AM IN/ROEM/SI

And is there such a thing as universal drivers for all Asus DDR2 motherboards?

Thanks.

You’d use that term for any motherboards using Intel processors designed for socket 775 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGA_775.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGA_775

I guess if every single Asus motherboard used identical components, then maybe universal drivers could exist. But they don't. 🙂

If every single Asus motherboard actually used the exact same components, maybe we could get away with universal drivers. But they don't. 🙂

Yeah, I figured there wouldn't be any universal drivers either, but hey, what's the harm in asking?

Still haven't even managed to get the sound working on that rig...

Joshua Garcia3 said:You gotta make sure you enter that for those motherboards running Intel chips on the socket 775 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGA_775. Just a heads up.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGA_775

If only every single Asus motherboard actually shared the exact same components, maybe we wouldn't be stuck in this endless loop of hunting down drivers. Imagine if they were all built identical? We could just have one universal driver for everything and call it a day. Wouldn't that be something? Instead, it's just this constant, annoying grind. Just a thought. 🙂

Man, I finally got the sound dialed in on that PC. Success at last. 🙂

Just wondering... purely for my own curiosity, you know? Just looking for some info.
Just some Windows 7 installation DVD... wonder if it actually works anymore? Or if it's just another piece of junk sitting in a drawer somewhere. Who knows.
So, I start the installation and it just hits me with that prompt asking if I actually want to go through with it... like, really? Does it think I don't know what I'm doing? Just let me click through already.
64-bit?
Or maybe 82... I don't even know anymore. Is it even worth the headache? Who knows.
Is that 82-bit thing just some weird label for a 32-bit system? Or am I just losing my mind here?
It’s just weird to me... I check the DVD and there's no 32-bit system on here at all? Just the Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit version. Why would they do that?

Thanks.
