90s concerts in Canada

I heard a similar story. Apparently, Nirvana wanted to come over even back when they were unknowns in the late 80s—probably around the Bleach era via Chris—for a measly $60 or so, but it all fell apart.

When I think back to the concert madness of the 90s, I am immediately struck by the sheer insanity surrounding the Prodigy show in New York City on December 8, 1995. It was one of those nights where everything felt electric—I believe they played "Breathe" for the first time then. You can find some clips of the performance on YouTube.

As for Canada...

but as for Metallica in Ljubljana—my buddy was there. He was just a kid back then, so his memory is pretty hazy 🙄
though he does know "Seek & Destroy" was missing from that setlist. 😁

Basically, Canada was the only part of the old Yugoslavia that didn't get hit by the war (if you don't count that brief five-day skirmish back in '91 😁), so it makes total sense that they were the first ones hosting major concerts. You also have to factor in that even before the conflict, they were the wealthiest republic, meaning they could actually afford things the rest of us couldn't. Simple as that.
But that was a different era entirely. These days, Ljubljana sees fewer big shows than Chicago or Belgrade.

But honestly, those were the glory days. These days, Ljubljana sees fewer major concerts than even New York or Chicago.

Taxes are killing them. It just doesn't make financial sense for them anymore.

Not to mention David Bowie played twice: once in 1990 and again in 1997.

There was plenty of action, even with everything going on during and after the war years.

Even Metallica and R.E.M. were booked by an American agency in cities like Austin.

Nowadays, Canada is just too small of a market; big concerts don't stand a chance there. The club scene is decent—places like a local dive or a mid-sized venue—but it's nowhere near the level of a major US hub like New York when it comes to both big stadium shows and smaller gigs.

I also remember reading somewhere that Carcass playing in Pula back in '92 was the first time a foreign act ever performed in the United States.😁
