This essentially resets the counter. Since you can run the rearm command up to three times on a single machine, you could theoretically stretch out that grace period to about 120 days total... assuming everything goes according to plan.

But even then, it isn't a permanent fix.

I have a question regarding the RTM version. Is there going to be any significant difference between this and the final retail release once it actually hits the shelves? And if I go ahead and activate it now, am I going to be forced to wipe the drive and reinstall Windows later...

In principle, you have to activate every single individual copy of Winz you install. So, if you're currently running the RTM version and decide to just keep working with that, you won't need to do anything else—provided you've already gone through the activation steps for this specific build. However, if you eventually decide to move over to a different version, like the final release, you'll definitely need to activate that one separately.

Don't go activating anything just yet—just hit remount instead. These loaders are crashing on a daily basis, so I'd say maybe wait a couple of weeks before you try anything.
Unless, of course, you're really losing sleep over not seeing "Windows is activated" on your screen.
Version 1.4 of the loader is already out, and they just dropped 1.3 like three days ago or something... so yeah, I'm definitely skipping the installation for now.
I think I'll just hold out until October 22nd when the new builds actually hit the retail stores. That's probably when the real deal comes out—once those OEM machines with the official keys start showing up. And who knows, maybe I can snag a decent version through the FBI if I get lucky. 😍

How would I go about activating an RC version while still being able to pull down updates and everything else?
If that isn't an option—how can I activate it without receiving any updates at all?

Just type "activator for Windows 7" into Google...

I can't exactly hand over a direct link here, but you'll figure it out soon enough... 👍

Does anyone know of a virtualization tool that lets me run Vista or XP in a separate window right inside Windows 7? I’ve got this one essential program that just refuses to cooperate with the OS, so I need a workaround.
And just so we're clear, I am absolutely not interested in VMware; that software is a total disaster, honestly—there are somehow a million different versions out there, and I've wasted my time downloading a mountain of them and various trials, yet not a single one actually works.

So, I think Windows Ultimate actually comes with built-in virtualization software that can run XP.

I was reading some discussion on a forum recently (I think it might have been on a site like Reddit) where someone mentioned that Windows 7 could take up to 16 GB of hard drive space just for the installation itself?
Is there any truth to that, or is 16 GB simply the minimum amount of free space you really need to have available?

You'll need 16GB for the 32-bit version and about 20GB if you're going with 64-bit.

I'm sitting at about 25GB total—but that includes pretty much everything I run.
So, like, Windows plus maybe... what, 15 different programs?

I've been running Windows 7 for four months now and it’s been smooth sailing. I'm currently on build 7231. Picked up my activation code directly from the Microsoft site. About 95% of my software works fine; I ran into some hiccups with games due to DirectX, but I sorted that out. For security, I'm using Norton 360 (beta - for Windows 7). All in all, it's great.

I'm just wondering if anyone knows what the retail price will look like. Microsoft says the release date is August 22, 2009, but it'll likely hit the shelves here in the US a bit later than that.

The date is October 22nd; you seem to have gotten your facts a bit mixed up here. 😉

If you actually bother to look a few pages back in this thread, you'll find the pricing listed there.

I'm finally checking in too. Been rocking the new Windows 7 Ultimate edition for five days now and honestly, I've got nothing but good things to say.
I didn't even bother with the Windows 7 beta, nor did I plan to. I never touch beta stuff... just too much hassle.

It’s just Windows forever.
Nah, I'm not happy with any of them. I've been sticking with XP Professional since the days of XP, and honestly, it still does the job fine.

I never even touched the Windows 7 beta, nor did I plan to. I don't mess with beta software—it's just too risky for me.

Since the official release isn't even out yet, you're basically stuck in the 🤣

Maybe try doing a little digging online? I think whatever is being talked about is hitting store shelves around October 22nd.
