Have you tried messing with any of the BIOS settings yet?

Can you try popping that Windows 7 DVD back in and taking a photo of whatever error message pops up (the one saying it needs an Acer Recovery DVD)?

Some big-shot expert around here, maybe you can help me out—is it better to install Windows 7 Ultimate or Professional?

According to this page, there isn't much of a difference.
The Ultimate version just adds data encryption and support for 35 languages. 🙄
If those two things aren't dealbreakers for you, feel free to just go with the Professional version. 🙂

Hey everyone! I have two quick questions for you all—I actually just finished installing Windows 7 yesterday, so I was wondering about a couple of things?

1. Regarding Microsoft Office—you know, Word, Excel, and the rest—how does that all play out on Windows 7? I currently have Office 2003, and I’m wondering if it’ll still run properly if I go ahead with the install. I’ve heard from a few friends that they had some trouble opening older Word documents, which makes me a little nervous... so, what is everyone else using for their word processing these days?

2. Also, I was curious if anyone knows how to change the window background color to gray instead of white? I personally find the bright white background a bit much—it’s just way too glaring for my eyes when everything is so bright behind the windows. I think I found the setting—somewhere under Personalization > Windows Color and Appearance > Advanced Appearance Settings—but whenever I try to switch it to gray, nothing seems to happen at all! It doesn't change a thing. I used to do this back on Windows XP and it was so much more comfortable to work this way. Does anyone know why the setting isn't sticking?

Noah Ruiz73 said:You're quite the little whiz, aren't you? 😬 Just... 🤔 Are you telling me you were already tinkering with computers at eight years old??? And in all that time, you managed to master things like Microsoft Office or playing Crysis Warhead? I don't know... 😕 but if you say so.

However, have you seriously never installed a single basic utility like Everest to see what components are sitting in your junk pile? Even if you know about it, you're still here stubbornly asking where... Or have you never even tried right-clicking on the desktop > properties > ... to check your graphics card?

And who put together this "new" hardware rig of yours? Don't tell me you did it all by yourself?!
Did they not provide you with any boxes, manuals, or paperwork either?!

To truly master all of this, you don't actually need to know how to code anything—those basics are covered in the first year of college!!! ... but then again... what do I know...
My apologies, ☕

1. I'm not a kid anymore; I'm a grown man (well, nearly 200 lbs)!
2. I've been gaming since I was eight! My very first game was Heroes of Might and Magic 3
3. I NEVER SAID I HAD A 6 GB JUNK PILE! In my opinion, I had a crappy PC, then a laptop, and now I have a beast!!!! 😁 !!!!
3. The computer was bought at wholesale prices (from an old friend)!!!! (No paperwork included)
4. I've only really been messing around with software over the last year... before that, I just played games.
5. I know about the graphics card, processor, RAM... but why on earth would I download fucking Everest just to find out the motherboard model? Am I supposed to die if I don't know the exact model number?
6. For finding games, one uses: http://www.gamespot.com/pc/index.htm...p;pc&navclk=pc + http://www.bitgamer.com/
7. It seems silly to argue over something as trivial as Everest. I was simply wondering if there's a specific place on the computer where this info can be viewed, hoping someone would point it out. (Personally, I find it strange that it isn't listed; shouldn't the model be visible for every component, much like it is for a gamepad, USB device, or steering wheel?...)

I'm planning to upgrade to Windows 7 in the next few days. Now that I've backed up everything I need, I started hunting for motherboard drivers and noticed there aren't any specifically for the chipset—just for audio, LAN, and SATA II. This is for a Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS3P (rev. 2.1) motherboard. I'm assuming Windows 7 comes with its own generic drivers, but is there any chance it can just find the specific chipset drivers it needs on its own?

Look, I'm pretty sure they have drivers for everything, but let me give you an idea of the headache I've been dealing with lately—it’s been a bit of a nightmare! So, I have my headphones plugged into the side of my motherboard, right? But ever since I switched over to these Windows 7 drivers, it’s like they don't even exist—my headphones just won't work at all. I tried installing some older drivers to see if that might fix things, but no luck there, unfortunately. Then, I thought maybe I could grab the latest ones directly from Gigabyte's homepage, but honestly, it feels like they just packaged up the Windows 7 versions and called it a day. To make matters worse, Firefox keeps blocking certain little things here and there... I've been going back and forth on this for two whole days now, just constantly tripping over these tiny, annoying little glitches...

7. It feels stupid to argue over Everest. I just thought there might be a place on the PC where you could actually see this stuff. To me, it seems weird that it doesn't show up; I feel like you should be able to see the model for every component, kind of like a gamepad, USB device, or steering wheel.

You're still acting like a kid. Instead of bickering here, you could have just downloaded Everest 300 times and looked it up yourself.

You’re still quite young, aren't you? Instead of wasting your time bickering here, wouldn't it be much more productive to just download Everest three hundred times and actually see it for yourself?

If you haven't grasped my point by now, I am NOT downloading Everest.

Just pop the case open and check the motherboard model yourself.

Hey, seriously—you two need to take your bickering to private messages! Because you guys are busy arguing behind the scenes, my actual question just got completely buried and forgotten—which isn't exactly helpful, I guess!👍

John Clark6 said:Alright guys, I've got two questions. Just finished installing Windows 7 yesterday, so I'm wondering about a few things.

1. Regarding Office—Word, Excel, etc.—how does that work on 7? I have Office 2003; will it actually run if I install this? Some friends mentioned they couldn't open old Word documents. What are you all using for "Word"?

2. Also, how do I change the background of open windows to gray instead of white? The white is blinding me. I found the setting, but when I switch it to gray, absolutely nothing happens. I used to do this on XP and it was much easier on the eyes. I know where the setting is: Personalize -> window color and appearance -> advanced appearance settings, but even after adjusting it, there's zero change.

Smith, John Clark6 😁

1. I installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit and Office Home and Student 2007; everything works fine. I assume Office 2003 will run just as smoothly on the new Windows; the 2007 version handles files created in older versions (2003, 2000) without an issue, while for the reverse, there's that Office Compatibility Pack that lets you open Office 2007 files in the older versions.

2. I can't get that one to work either: right-click on the desktop, Personalize, window color (and appearance), but I don't see "advanced settings" anywhere 😕; you're supposed to select "Window" from the "Item" drop-down menu and then change the color under "Color 1"... but it isn't working for me either. 😢

If the glare is too much, just put some safety glasses on and deal with it. 🙂 😍

Even though your motherboard isn't officially on the supported list for Windows 7 (at least according to this list), it does have the right drivers for the newer Windows versions (both 32-bit and 64-bit), just like you mentioned.

If you end up actually needing those chipset drivers for your board, you can usually grab them from the Intel website.

BTW, what's the plan for the move to 7? 🙄

Alright, here’s what I’m running...

CPU: AMD Athlon XP, 1473 MHz (11 x 134) 1700+
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-7VT600P-RZ(C)
RAM: 1.5GB DDR
BIOS Version: F5
Storage: 160GB + 320GB
Audio: Altec Lansing 5.1
GPU: RADEON 9250 128MB

I’m trying to figure out if I can jump straight from Windows XP to Windows 7 without any major headaches, or if I'm walking into a total disaster zone. Is there some specific BIOS tinkering required to make this work? Does anyone have actual advice before I pull the trigger on the installation? (And please, spare me the "just go buy a new computer" comments—I’m already planning on doing exactly that, haha...)

Thanks! :-)
