So, I sent my friend this thick envelope via certified mail containing about 100 grams of centella powder—it’s just a little herb used in anti-cellulite treatments and stuff—but apparently, some genius at the post office decided to slice through the extra tape I used to reinforce the package, opened the envelope, swiped all the powder, and left my friend with nothing but an empty sleeve when she went to pick it up at the local branch.
I guess it was a stroke of luck that she realized immediately that there was absolutely nothing inside the envelope.
Maybe some overzealous person thought they were intercepting something illegal, like drugs or something?😁
All in all, the total value of what was in that shipment is only about $45, so I was kind of wondering if there's actually any hope of us getting that money back somehow.😕
My friend actually filed a formal complaint right then and there at the post office.🤷

I mean, I ship certified packages all across the United States almost every single day, and I honestly can't say this has ever happened to me before.

It’s just not how it works... first you have to actually pay for it and pick it up—only then can you decide what to do with it, whether you want to open it up, toss it in the trash (kidding, mostly) or whatever else comes to mind... 😉

thanks 🙂

Forget the local post office, you definitely want to go with FedEx instead...

Some joker probably thought it was some kind of illicit drug.😁.

If your friend already filed a complaint at the post office, then you actually have a really good chance of getting reimbursed. Since the weight is recorded right next to the tracking number on the shipment, it won't match once the contents are gone.
You should end up getting five times the shipping cost back.

Hey, I need to mail some tickets for the FIFA World Cup 2012 overseas. It’s funny how such a tiny little scrap of paper can be worth so much... 🙂
What would you say is my best bet here? Is there any way the recipient can just cover the value of the contents plus the shipping costs upon delivery, like how we handle things back home, or does doing business internationally make that whole process a bit more complicated? I noticed that companies like FedEx or DHL are asking for $133 even for sending something as light as half a kilo!

What's my best bet here? Is there any way for the recipient to pay for both the item's value and the shipping costs upon delivery—like how we can do things locally—or is doing that internationally a bit more complicated? It seems like FedEx, DHL, and those other guys want an arm and a leg $133 whenever you're trying to ship anything under 0.5 kg!

Registered mail for international shipping

maybe try USPS Priority Mail or something similar

there isn't really an option for someone overseas to cover the shipping fees at the time of delivery

It would be great if someone could help me out tonight...

I’m trying to remember how the process works when I ship via FedEx—it slipped my mind.

Do I need to clearly mark the COD amount (COD=$XX.XX) on the package, similar to how you'd handle a standard "certified mail with cash on delivery" shipment?

you do
it's pretty much identical
for any registered shipments, you have to list: the sender, the recipient, and the COD amount if there is one
the only real difference is the specific form you fill out at the FedEx office.

I suspect their shipping calculator over at FedEx isn't quite hitting the mark—it seems to be underestimating the actual costs, even though everything else on the site works perfectly fine.

Do you actually know how much the difference is compared to their rates?
If we're talking about a couple of bucks, that’s just the price gap between picking up your package at the Post Office counter versus scheduling a pickup through that number so they come right to your door.
But if it's $2.50, then you're looking at the total cost for the buyback service.

Linda Chavez14 said:By the way, I think one of my packages got lost. It was sent on May 15th, and the tracking just stops after arriving in Indianapolis. Based on the website's timeline, it should have reached its destination by today. I guess I'm wondering if it's too early to file a claim today, and how long the whole process usually takes before the carrier decides to reimburse the value listed on the package?
Thanks in advance.

I was a bit busy so I didn't get a chance to check in sooner, but my package actually did arrive at its destination. So, I probably won't need to deal with filing a claim or any of those other procedures after all. 🙂
Thanks again to everyone for the advice. 🙂

What’s actually the best way to mail important documents? I really can't afford for anything to go missing—it's just not an option for me right now... I'm more than willing to shell out for the premium shipping rates if it means having that 100% certainty that my papers will actually hit their destination safely...

Maybe try FedEx?

Hello there.

I’m looking to send a small package worth about $40 from Washington, D.C. over to San Diego, and I need the recipient to pay upon delivery via COD...
Since this is my first time handling something like this, I could really use some guidance on the best way to go about it—I’m a bit lost when it comes to the nuances of shipping, whether it’s a certified letter with cash on delivery, a priority mail item with COD, or any of those other technicalities...
And if you wouldn't mind, please don't just point me back to the very first post in this thread; I’ve already given it a read, but the actual step-by-step process still feels a little fuzzy to me...

Thanks in advance. 🙂

That’s exactly what my aunt suggested to me on her post too... so, yeah, I sent it. 🙂

Hey there. Just checking in.

I really ought to be sending out a little package of value—something substantial, you know? Just one of those things that stays on your mind while you're staring at the ceiling at 2 AM, wondering if you've actually contributed anything meaningful lately. It’s funny how we spend all this time talking about big ideas, but the actual substance... well, that's a different story entirely. $40 So, I’m looking at this shipment going from Washington, D.C. all the way down to San Diego—quite the trek, really—and the whole thing is supposed to be a cash-on-delivery deal. Just a straightforward COD arrangement.
I’m looking for some advice here because, frankly, I don’t know the first thing about shipping stuff—I’m a complete novice when it comes to this whole process. I need to send out a few things, including a high-value letter with COD (cash on delivery), a priority letter with COD, and a few other variations. Since this is my first time navigating the logistics of it all, I’d really appreciate any guidance on the best way to handle this without making a mess of things.
Could someone please—and I say this with the utmost respect for everyone's time—direct me back to the very first post in this thread? I’ve gone through it once already, but honestly, I feel like I missed the forest for the trees. I didn't quite grasp the full step-by-step process, and I'd rather get it right the first time than go stumbling around blindly. Thanks.

Thanks in advance. 🙂

Honestly, if I were in your shoes, I’d be sending every single COD shipment through FedEx without a second thought. It’s just more reliable—it gets there the next day, and you can actually pick your delivery window. If you aim for a slot before 8 PM, the shipping rates are actually pretty reasonable. The process is straightforward enough, too. You just head down to the local FedEx office, walk up to the counter, and tell them you want to send this out as a cash-on-delivery shipment via FedEx. The clerk will hand you a form to fill out, and that's really all there is to it. I don't know the exact technical jargon they use, so you might have to let them walk you through the specific lines on the paperwork—but once that's done, you're good to go. 😉 Look, if you just pay the shipping costs upfront, then fine—it’s handled. But if you don't? Well, they just slap a label on the package stating that the recipient is responsible for the postage... which means he ends up footing the bill. $40 And then there's the shipping costs... honestly, it’s getting ridiculous. Every time I try to order something online lately, the price of getting it from point A to point B seems to jump up just because they can. It’s like a hidden tax on everything we buy. You think you've found a decent deal, you get to the checkout, and suddenly—bam—you're staring at an extra twenty bucks just to have it sit in a FedEx truck for three days. It really throws a wrench in the whole budget, doesn't it?

Hannah Barrett61 said:Is it actually allowed, for instance, if I get a package sent cash on delivery, to just open it at the post office? If it's what I ordered, I take it; if not, I send it back.
I recall that recent situation with the cell phone, where someone sent a phone via COD and everything inside was anything but what was paid for. 🤔

Unfortunately, that isn't an option because the USPS doesn't offer that service. I asked myself the same thing, so I guess we senders are basically unprotected.

Hi there.

I have a question similar to the one {{Johnny Cash}} posted recently. Basically, someone from far-off Nigeria (?) reached out regarding my laptop listing and is insisting we handle the transaction via cash on delivery.
Since I’ve never sold anything this way, I’m completely in the dark about how it works. I also took a look at your first post, but I couldn't find the specific details I'm looking for.
Mainly, I'm wondering: just how safe is this? Is there a real risk that neither the buyer sees the money nor do I get the laptop? Also, roughly how much would shipping cost me? Thanks!

Don't bother dealing with Nigerians or anyone who reaches out via classified ads claiming to be from there. There are way too many documented scams out there already. I’ve had people hitting up my listings for laptops and phones, offering me even more than I originally asked for just to get my foot in the door. They hide behind all sorts of different aliases, but they always mention being from Nigeria. Honestly, do some digging online; you'll find plenty of red flags. Their whole game is just fishing for your personal data and tricking you into a "business" relationship. My advice? Stick to selling within the US and try to do everything in person if you can. So, my verdict is—it is definitely NOT safe.
