Alonso: We have to keep pushing the performance envelope
Renault's Fernando Alonso is making it clear: they need to double down on their development if they want to stay relevant.
After qualifying a mediocre twelfth on Saturday, the Spaniard managed to claw his way up to a fourth-place finish in today's race.
While he views the result as a massive morale booster for the crew, he isn't delusional—he knows they’ll need more raw speed if they ever hope to catch the leaders.
"It was a bizarre race, honestly. Just a chaotic mess of overtakes, collisions, and mechanical failures hitting half the field," he noted.
"We squeezed every bit of potential out of what we had today. Bringing home a result like this gives the team the confidence and momentum we need to tackle the rest of the season."
"That said, we can't get complacent. We have to keep refining both our qualifying pace and our race trim, but today was a vital step forward for us."
Meanwhile, his teammate Nelson Piquet had a nightmare debut during this Grand Prix weekend, seeing his race cut short on lap 31.
"The start felt solid, and I actually gained a few spots right out of the gate. But then someone clipped me at the opening, causing damage that eventually forced me out. It’s hard to finish your first Grand Prix race when you're fighting survival instead of positions."
"Naturally, I'm disappointed, but there's a silver lining in how much I learned this weekend. I'm ready to head to Malaysia and get back to work. I'm hoping for a better showing there, and since I'm already familiar with Sepang, I think we can hit the ground running."
