Used PC builds: What are they worth?

Cca $300 rig plus maybe another 400-450 for a decent monitor.

The monitor I'm using is a Dell Monitor

Look, if you wanted to go out and grab a brand-new LED monitor in that same size range today, you’re looking at roughly $250. So, honestly—do the math yourself—how much would you actually be willing to shell out for a used one that's already about four years old?

roughly. $400 for the tower and maybe $167 for the monitor. Plus, I'd say +-$33 for the whole setup (depending on what the buyer is looking for, obviously). Though, if I'm being honest, I have this nagging feeling I might actually walk away with more cash if I just stripped it all down and sold the parts individually... but hey, that's just my two cents. 🙂

A friend of mine is looking to offload a PC build he’s had for about a year and a half. Does anyone have an idea of what kind of asking price would be realistic here?

That's it? 😲 The motherboard is worth maybe $200 alone. And yeah, the C45 is... The power supply is only $83 and a new one would run you $400, especially since this one still has its 3-year warranty. The monitor is only a month old, basically brand new with a full warranty, and it's already $67 less than that? Honestly, the whole rig cost well over $1500 when it was new, $833 so that seems way too low to me. 🤷

Well, there goes the "brand new" status... and its resale value right along with it.

You could always try playing the warranty card with a buyer to squeeze out another hundred bucks or so...

I know, but I just can't bring myself to give it away for half price after a whole year... Oh well, it's going for $300, so whoever wants it can grab it. 😁

I’d definitely push for an extra hundred bucks for the processor, maybe $17 more for the motherboard, but honestly? If you get that much for the monitor, consider yourself lucky. That thing probably loses half its value the second you break the seal on the box.

If you ask me, just bundle everything together. It’ll be way easier to find some sucker willing to overpay for a complete setup than trying to hawk these parts off one by one. The build is actually pretty well-balanced—I'm guessing you put this together using parts from a local enthusiast forum? 😉

For sure! 😁 I'm not too certain about the processor; a brand new Phenom 955 is currently $217, and I wouldn't pay more than $500 for a used 840. I know there are people out there who aren't very tech-savvy and might shell out $1000 for an AM2 build, but I'm looking for a realistic price. What I'll TRY to get for it is a completely different story. 😉

So, I've dug up this old bucket of bolts (my ancient PC xD) and I'm wondering—how much can I actually screw this thing up > before it completely dies on me? Specs are: an Intel Xeon 2.666 processor, an IBM Eserver motherboard (dual socket setup), 1.5GB of RAM (six 256MB sticks), a 20GB hard drive, and some pathetic 8MB ATI RAGE XL integrated graphics.

That rig is pretty much useless for anything nowadays besides maybe some very basic web browsing—though even that might be a struggle. You could try to list it for sale, but I honestly doubt anyone would bite; at this point, whatever someone offers you will likely be way more than the hardware is actually worth.
