So I guess it’ll be Mexican and/or Canadian music then? If we’re all okay with listening to Cuban or Portuguese folk music, why wouldn't we listen to our neighbors' stuff too? 🙂

I don't know, personally I don't really care for that kind of music, but I honestly can't fathom how other people going to a concert like this could possibly threaten my own musical tastes 🤔

I guess some people just get a little too much joy out of seeing their neighbor's luck run dry, right?

"North American" Mexicans are pulling off some seriously top-tier music festivals this year (Coachella, Lollapalooza) and they’re bringing in massive global heavyweights like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Underworld, and the Chemical Brothers... meanwhile, we Americans just seem to be "importing" their local folk stars and stuff from Canada... damn!!! I mean, who's actually losing it here? What is happening to us? Is this just some weird fever dream? Where exactly are we living?

Let people listen to whatever they want, but I'd really love to see a major global superstar perform in Chicago.

Since I actually have a job, I can afford to travel for shows—I've seen Setzer in Seattle, New York City, and Glasgow—but it would be great if we had a killer concert right here for us rockers, maybe something like Coachella where big names play somewhere in the States. That's all I'm hoping for.

I feel like tons of people know all those country songs, and once they hit that certain level of tipsy, they love hearing them, singing along, maybe even shedding a tear or two. But... back then, you’d only hear a country track playing off some bootleg CD at $0.67 or $2.00 turnover, probably ripped from the web by some fanatic...
The venues stay empty not because nobody listens to country or wouldn't go, but because nobody’s actually gonna shell out $63 (basically, there isn't a critical mass of country fans who sit around waiting for an artist's new album), it's just music for when you're drunk and feeling good. It's not for when you're planning to drop anything less than $67 while risking a bunch of hypocritical gossip from your buddies—you know, the ones from college, work, or high school.

And honestly, anyone bringing up Bešlić in the same breath as that trashy turbo-country stuff is clearly deaf.

It’s honestly ridiculous—Mexico has two major rock festivals, meanwhile, in Chicago, there hasn't been a decent concert in years, and the few clubs left basically cater exclusively to that mainstream crowd.

By all accounts, it looks like I’ll be heading out this summer to catch my favorite artists in some other major European metropolis again.

Look, venues should be available to anyone who actually wants to play here.
We've had plenty of massive acts over the last few years, and nobody actually sold out their shows (except maybe DM)—in fact, most of our arenas are way too large even for some of the biggest names—so don't even get me started on the idea of filling a stadium in this country.

When Metallica came to visit us, we bought so few tickets that they basically gave us the middle finger and canceled the show because ticket sales were sitting at a pathetic 10,000.

At the end of the day, we have no one to blame for being bypassed than ourselves.

Just a heads up, these three guys—Brian Setzer, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Paul Anka—aren't exactly "mainstream" in the way you think.

Setzer sells out venues across Europe, the USA, and Japan without even trying. He doesn't run ads; he just posts a notice on his site with a ticket link and calls it a day. His shows sell out within a week or two of the announcement, even if there isn't a single poster plastered on a wall in the city where he's playing. You've got fans flying in from all over the globe, taking entire vacations just to catch his sets in Europe, the US, or Japan. 🙏
