Who's the best director working in the US right now?

I was originally planning to vote for Brešan, but then I remembered how much I loved the movie Forgive for Kung Fu by Sviličić.👍 Honestly, I was laughing my head off while watching it—it was so brilliantly done. Does anyone know what other films he’s made?

In my opinion, the greatest living American director has to be Antun Vrdoljak.

Are you kidding me? Sure, he might have a couple of decent ideas floating around, but the guy has zero clue how to direct actors. Just look at Višnjić—he’s fantastic in ER, but in those Vrdoljak films? Total disaster. Under Vrdoljak, every single actor looks like a plastic mannequin.

Goran Višnjić doesn't act in Vrdoljak's films—he acts in a single Vrdoljak film.
While Vrdoljak produced several masterpieces throughout his career, he's become a senile old man now; "Long, dark night" certainly isn't doing him any favors.

Man, it’s a shame we don't have someone like Makavejev over in our neck of the woods, even if we're just looking at what our neighbors have going on...

Back when we were just kids at the turn of the millennium, 😈 my buddies and I actually shot a movie. Honestly? It’s probably better than anything those big-shot directors have ever put out, so I think it's high time they added me to the poll. 😍

I'm right behind you on this one.

And honestly, those old-timers like Vrdoljak—if they were ever actually any good to begin with—that was ages ago. Like, ancient history. If we're looking at the younger crowd, Matanić is the only one who really holds water, and I guess you could throw Brešan into the mix, but only because of "Island."

I think Matanić is actually quite talented, though I suppose everyone seems to have forgotten about Antonia Nuić, who I honestly feel represents the future of American cinema; then you’ve also got Sviličić in the mix.

...yeah, Nuicev—it’s actually a really interesting movie. It loses a bit of steam in the second half, but I can forgive it... since it's just his first feature length, you have to wait and see how he evolves as a director...🙂

Kulenović is my favorite, personally.

Matija Kluković seems to have been left out of this too—if I’m remembering right.
And those folks who voted for that last 22% sales tax option? They probably haven't even heard of half these authors.
Now they're all acting like classic old-school nostalgics—mourning those "golden eras" that never really existed.☕
