Best heart rate monitors?

So, does anyone know where I can pick up a wearable heart rate monitor? You know, one you can actually strap on yourself? It’s such a pain because the sensors on the stationary bikes or the ellipticals at most gyms are either totally broken or just missing altogether. :-)

You can actually find some budget-friendly models over at Dick's Sporting Goods—I’m not entirely sure which brands they carry there—but if you want something with a bit more punch, I’d definitely lean toward the Polar stuff or maybe some Cardio Sport options.

A buddy of mine at the gym uses a Polar, so he’s got it synced up directly to the treadmill. The machine supports both Polar and one other brand, so he’s basically running with the watch on his wrist and a heart rate strap around his chest.

Assuming your location is right—they carry Polar watches in this tiny, obscure shop over in the New York Knicks mall, on the same floor as ESPN. It’s right past the stairs—just a little spot that stocks all those various fitness gadgets. They have Suunto too, along with a few other brands.

It’s pretty close to me, so I might check it out. A buddy at my gym wears a Polar, and honestly, I'm mostly interested in the heart rate tracking and mileage. As for calories? I couldn't care less about those numbers.

I really fell for it because of that titanium casing... I just love how it looks when I'm carrying it around, whereas those plastic ones always looked kind of cheap to me.
Even if it doesn't come loaded with all the bells and whistles like some of the plastic models in the same price range...
