Yes and no.🙂

A lot of younger people today are really into them... like when someone plays Teenage Kicks out at a club in New York City. They definitely hold their own status.🙂

Dođi is a masterpiece of redneck rock. Go play with your toys...
Ugh, damn it.

Đihade, you idiot, I said I caught them live just passing through.
They ARE a redneck masterpiece!!! I didn't tell anyone not to listen, you absolute loser.
You're gonna end up dead tonight, worked up over some low-life trucker who reeks of cheap bourbon... blood's gonna be staining the snow by morning.

Alex Scott22 said:So now one of the big trends around here is this whole folk-rock thing... but when you grew up in the USA back in the day, where everything felt like folk-rock, you just can't get into it, even as a joke. It was too much of a struggle for a kid like me—you’d get beat up or looked down on by the folk-rock crowd just because you wore, say, a black band tee, haha, true story 🙂 Or you were just constantly bombarded with that vibe on the radio and TV every single day... man, what a mess.

I feel the exact opposite. I used to think country music was only for people from some weird subculture I didn't even realize existed until I joined the US Army. Honestly, I never paid much attention to country, except for those types like Lepa Bren who somehow made it onto magazine covers and Sunday afternoon specials. Now that it's everywhere, I really don't want to subject myself to more of it. That's also part of why I can't stand bands like Nervous Postman—look, I respect the irony and they're good musicians, but that vibe just isn't for me. I can handle ten minutes of it while having a beer, but after that, it just starts getting on my nerves...

Hmm, well, that certainly explains everything then. 😁

@ stormyviper11: What exactly is missing from The Smiths? They’re easily one of the most accessible bands out there, and honestly, they’re probably the least "opossum" of everyone on this list. 🙂

Man, this forum is moving at a snail's pace. 🆙

I wasn't even talking about country music... I meant that American rock with a folk groove... that whole Boston scene and stuff... that kind of thing was huge back in the late eighties.
.. it was everywhere, from the TV screens to the local bars.

They're a total masterpiece of redneck art!!! I never banned them, you little jerk.
You’re gonna die tonight from being too hyped up by some trimmed-down trucker stinking of cheap whiskey... blood's gonna be staining the snow all over your legs.

ZELIG HAS TOTALLY LOST IT! 👋 👋

Alex Scott22 said:Well, yes and no 🙂

Nowadays, there's a whole younger crowd that absolutely loses it over them... like, if someone plays Teenage Kicks out at a club in New York City, they’ve got instant legendary status 🙂

There was this countdown recently on some station in New York City—think NPR or something—where they picked the top 100 songs of all time. It was just the usual heavy hitters, you know? Stairway to Heaven, I Will Always Love You, Smells Like Teen Spirit, blah, blah, blah... And way down near the bottom, sitting at like number ninety-something, was Teenage Kicks. Honestly, I don't even know if I should be happy about that or not... And as for the Undertones, most people vibing to that track probably haven't even heard Here comes The Summer ili When saturday comes, not that I want to get too deep into it. Maybe they've heard Fergala a good Heart as a solo thing... 😁

By the way, is that actually the worst solo hit ever from a member of a legit cult band?

Susan Clark10 said:@ stormyviper11: what's the deal with the Smiths? they're actually pretty accessible, definitely not the most obscure indie band on this list 🙂

The Smiths are just okay to me. They've got some good moments, sure, but honestly, they bore me after a while.
I lumped them in with the Sisters, which might be a stretch—they’re better than them, but they just never really clicked for me...
I'm not gonna go out of my way to blast The Smiths, but they'll fit fine if I catch them in an 80s retrospective somewhere between FGTH, Billy Idol, and Neno...

Susan Clark10 said:A band that actually names itself after an art movement—and goes on to drop references to white Lugosia and Antonin Artaud in their lyrics—simply cannot be lacking in substance...🙂

I had suspected the formula was quite straightforward. I would humbly request that one student of art history, one of architecture, and one of film directing reach out to me—to discuss the naming of the group and the lyrical direction... Please bring your textbooks. 😉

And what else? How am I supposed to actually connect with anyone when I swing by Boston for the first time to grab a coffee and a slice of pizza? If you don't want to be treated like some clueless tourist in someone else's backyard, they'll just try to lecture you on how things work here...

Honestly, I’m starting to think The Idols' solo stuff actually hits harder than Generation X, which isn't saying much...

And "When Saturday Comes" by The Undertones is just 😍

Yes and no... 🙂

The younger crowd is really starting to claim their territory... For instance, when you hear Teenage Kicks playing out somewhere in New York City, they still command that level of respect. They have a certain status... 🙂

Sure, but how many of those same people are actually out there streaming His Good Looking Girlfriend? Or listening to anything that isn't Teenage Kicks?... 😉

It’s a phenomenon similar to what happened with The Real Kids... A brilliant band, yet remembered as nothing more than a one-hit wonder due to a series of unfortunate circumstances...

Ha, I just caught what Kevin Chavez3 posted over on The Undertones thread... 🙂

Honestly, you’re just talking nonsense today. Calling 999 the kings of the universe? Claiming some kid is a glass icon? Saying The Smiths are only conditionally listenable? Or that Siouxsie and Joy Division are boring? Are you intentionally attacking every single sacred cow just to stir the pot? Please... spare me, you punk... 😬

Here are my top picks for band transformations where, for reasons I still can't quite wrap my head around, they ditched their original sound to chase a completely different vibe—and ended up spiraling into pure boredom:

1. The Damned

Shut up! You idiot! 😠

Every single one of The Damned is the best of The Damned. 🙂

I've been sitting here for five minutes trying to come up with a response. I was told I shouldn't go too hard on her. Just kidding. 😬It’s just not working for me. 😁

They’re great because they’re weird and absolutely insane. Seriously, what's with the names and all that Lugosa stuff?

Are you seriously telling me Real Kids are a one-hit wonder? What single are we even talking about, man? Every single track they dropped was a hit!

Every The Damned fan knows which one is best. 🙂

(unless maybe it's "anything")

Hey, have you ever heard that gothic horror track? Eloise, I think it was called. 😱

It’s from when Vanian stopped acting like a normal guy—you know, the kind of guy who follows God's orders like Dracula... and turned into, man... I don't even have the words... with that raccoon-eye look and that post-Baroque outfit.

They're great, though—just weird and totally crazy, bless them. And those names and all the mentions of Lugos... what a trip.

Man, it was just a joke! You don't actually think I'm into Bauhaus just because of the name, do you? 😵 (Though, I do love that they named themselves after Walter Gropius—that part I love)😍.

A directive? Since when did I get special treatment on this forum? 😬
