Good grief, those damn Doors!!! My girlfriends used to be absolutely obsessed with Jim Morrison; they had all sorts of little shrines dedicated to him tucked away in their teenage bedrooms. Honestly, I think ever since then, the mere sound of a keyboard makes me want to gag.

The top 5 cassette tapes my grandfather used to keep in his car
1. The Beach Boys - the track "Mother's Eye" was the absolute standout
2. White - Zlatan
4. Regional Folk Hits
5. Cher (I remember the cover art, though the album title escapes me)

edit: I had to cut Frank Sinatra from the third spot

I’m not sure I buy the idea that music itself can sound "dated." Sure, it might be tied to a specific era and fail to vibe with what’s happening today, but that's different. In that sense, I get where people are coming from regarding The Doors and Cream, and honestly, I think there were plenty of much more interesting bands out there at the time. It doesn't mean they suck, it just means they aren't really my thing anymore, though I won't exactly change the station if they come on the radio. If anything, The Doors just irritate me more because of how obsessive their fanbase gets. Still, they had some solid blues tracks I'll always be down to hear...

Regarding Bauhaus sounding "old"... well, I didn't really catch that. I love them mostly for those two or three-note piano lines, and somehow minimalism feels more timeless than other genres to me.

Kevin Chavez3, I don't see why the lack of originality in certain classic bands would actually be a letdown??? If you ask me, 99% of the music we listen to and love is unoriginal—and usually, that’s exactly why we love it.

Man, I am really laying into people today...

Forget the metaphysics for a second. I want to ask those of you with more experience and better taste: if "All The Young Dudes" is truly a masterpiece, should I actually bother collecting this band's discography? I’ve been browsing AllMusic, and it seems like grabbing the "Young Dudes" album along with the one immediately before and after might be a smart move, but I'm open to suggestions...

I might have an answer for you: just dive into Thin Lizzy since their whole vibe is pure rebellion, and I think I can hear some Bad Reputation in there too 👋

Thin Lizzy will eventually get their turn, but I have questions about this first.

Sandra Chase16, you should download this track and see how long it keeps your interest. To my ears, it captures the whole vibe of "Enough Rope," along with plenty of their earlier stuff like "Complete Control" and even some later tracks from "Death or Glory."

The Doors are solid—at times, they’re actually incredible. I’m talking *The Doors*, *Strange Days*, and *L.A. Woman*. If they had just a bit more of an edge, they would have been perfect, but they’ll do. As for Jim Morrison and his "Love, Sex, and Rock & Roll" vibe, I'll leave that to the ladies.

I really need to sit down and give Thin Lizzy the proper listening session they deserve one of these days. I always enjoy hearing their take on "Whiskey in the Jar." If nothing else, I owe it to myself to get through their discography after that recommendation from Henry Rollins.

And all those semi-anonymous acts coming out of the UK in '77? They’re also on my list for a future deep dive—basically a remedial music history course.

It’s just too much to get through...

Mott the Hoople is a decent band. That’s all I’m saying. All The Young Dudes is easily their best work, and honestly, I’m worried the rest of their stuff is just going to leave you feeling let down.

Now, if we're talking about classic Thin Lizzy, those first four or five albums? They're way more than just a "decent band."

e - I’ve heard of London SS and Count Bishop, but I’ve never actually sat down to listen to them.

I guess I'll just go track down my Rastafarian brother instead.

There's a demo from '75 featuring James, James, and Jones 🙂

Jones Manje-vise did some covers of 60s beat groups... plus a few of their own originals. It’s not impossible to find (there's one compilation on cassette)

It isn't mind-blowing, but obviously, they're on the list because of the bigger picture..

Oh, come on, Megapunk is total garbage. Those idiots should have broken up right after "stupidity is indestructible." 🙂

By the way, you’re actually the first person I know who genuinely digs that album. 🙂

Yeah, I figured someone would come after me for mentioning Bauhaus... 🙂

It’s hard to put into words... the sound feels somewhat artificial... and honestly, the lyrics have started feeling empty to me...
