We both sound just like Sandra Chase16 when we talk about our grandmas.

My grandma’s top 5 favorite words:
1. flour
2. lasagna noodles
3. meatloaf
4. soufflé (okay, maybe I love the actual dish more than the word itself, but nothing beats my grandma's homemade version)
5. matting

"The easiest way is to take the exit from the roundabout heading toward Chicago.
Then just hop off the interstate toward the harbor area.
From there, you basically just drive straight.
Hit the first light.
Pass the second light.
After that second one, take a left about 150 yards out.
That’s where you’ll find it.
Good luck, Samuel Murphy6 🙂

5. matting

Oh man, this is absolutely gold! Please, you have to translate them for me (well, except for soufflé, I definitely know what that is)...😁 🙂

My grandmother's top 5 favorite words:
1. sourdough starter

Goodness, those terms...🤣
In my household, we always used the term "Nana."😁

Here are my top 5 nautical terms:

1. hull integrity
2. deckhand
3. mooring ring
4. cabin boy
5. dove

That whole "paspartu" thing sounds incredibly Southern European to me, like something you'd hear from someone living on a tiny island off the coast of Sicily...
btw my grandma calls a car a "vroom-vroom" 😁

She definitely used plenty of those old-school regionalisms—since they lived in New Orleans for quite a while—but I’ve forgotten most of them. I should ask my mom; she probably remembers some even funnier ones.

where I grew up, we used all this old-school slang... 😁

Here are my top 5 nautical terms:

1. bilge rat
2. deckhand
3. anchor
4. jib
5. gull

Oh, wait, there's more! I could probably list some fishing ones too, like "bottom feeder" or "hook, line, and sinker"... (I love using "bottom feeder," you can totally call someone that if they're being a total creep, haha!) 😍

I saw the Bavarian one at my place.
There was actually a Fantômas Bavarian available at Ferrari... I'll probably be kicking myself forever that I didn't grab it 😢

Nicholas King62 said:It's pretty vivid—honestly, that movie might be the best book adaptation out there, besides Brazil. It’s probably Terry Gilliam's best work for me. It feels almost shot scene-for-scene from the book, everything flows so smoothly and convincingly. It keeps that gritty edge from the original, too.

Oof. For me, that movie was kind of a bust, and the book wasn't much better. But I absolutely love Brazil. 🙏 😍
I don't know, if anyone wants to see what actual drug use looks like, they should read Naked Lunch. Hunter S. is image according to William S. 😁

We always used to call it a particle. To me, the term "law" just sounds like total nonsense... I honestly spent years thinking my old man was messing with me whenever he told me to tie my laces tight.

korpomorto
The second mate...
Third round...
4. pajet
May 5th...

I always thought it was colpo morto. Or mezzo-mariner. I guess that’s just how those guys back home in our coastal town explain things so they don't sound too much like salty old sailors... 😁 Is Payet really on the same level as Payet...

Ponor said:Man, that movie was a complete letdown, much like the book itself. Though I still have a massive soft spot for Brazil.🙏 😍
I’m not so sure; if anyone actually wants a raw look at what true drug use entails, they should probably stick to reading *The Naked Lunch*. Hunter S. is image compared to William S. 😁

It’s not like I need an Émile Zola novel to describe what being high feels like.😁 *Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas* feels like a chaotic circus, whereas *The Naked Lunch* is more like a feverish, dark delirium, yet I found value in both.

It might be time to admit that Gilliam’s work actually holds up better than Cronenberg’s.😛 🙂

Sean Lee7 said:I always thought it meant *corpomorto* or maybe something related to a sea mariner. It sounds like something people from coastal towns would say just to make it sound less nautical. And is *pajet* the same thing as *pajol*?😁

Well, the beauty of the term "corpomorto" lies in the fact that it translates directly to "dead body."😁

As for *pajet*, that refers to the side panel or the gunwale of a boat.

Fair enough. But I still think pajol is a top-tier word. 😁

So, here’s the current list:
babajol
siperak/siperchich
partihlich/partihlek
bradek
bavorinich
baberin/babarin
partikl
bavarin
babalin (though that might just be a baby version of "bavarin" 🤔 )

Are there any others left? Most of these feel like mere variations on a theme now... and please, don't start making things up! 🙂

+ Also, does anyone happen to know what bibek means? It's right on the tip of my tongue...

well, he probably would have been pretty thorough about it, I guess🙂

arguing that this Gilliam version is better than the Cronenberg one😛 🙂

No need to strain yourself—we're on the same page here😉
the movie is terrible.
btw, have you done your local Tour de France yet?

Anyway, here's the directions to get to the gyro joint:
"The easiest way is to take the rotor toward Columbus
then just hop off the highway toward the port area
and honestly, you basically just drive straight from there
hit the first light
hit the second light
and then, about 150 meters after that second light, hang a left
and you're there."
Good luck, bye 🙂

How long is the trek if I just walk from downtown? 🙂
