Look, it’s simple—people have been wearing them for decades now. And let’s be honest, Americans aren't exactly known for changing their habits easily... they're just cool. Does that clear things up for you? 😁

They aren't just cool—they are absolutely steaming hot... honestly, quite something else entirely. 😁

I’m just not a fan of Converse; they really don't do much for me. Seriously though. They’re canvas, so I can't exactly wear them once winter hits, and when summer rolls around, I'd much rather just grab some sandals because of the heat. On top of that, it bugs me how overpriced they actually are. If they were around $50, which is what they're worth, I might actually pick up a pair—mostly just to lean into that whole punk aesthetic whenever I'm feeling 😉... but they end up costing more than $133, for heaven's sake. THAT IS NOT CHEAP!

It’s just great wearing them through the slush in the dead of winter. Your feet get completely soaked and chilled, and before you know it, you're dealing with ingrown toenails.

That's not true. I wore mine for two winters.

Actually, during the second year, I ended up with pneumonia...

Man, what a heated debate we have going on here!

Back in the day, people wore Chuck Taylors simply because they were the budget option—you wore them if you were basically broke. Fast forward to today, and that same "broke" demographic is out there buying high-end sneakers that cost $133.
Here’s the kicker: we went from the era of socialized equality to this massive, unstoppable wave of capitalism, or whatever you want to call it.
It’s everywhere. From the NBA players down to the die-hard fans, everyone is obsessed with those sleek, trendy silhouettes and all that hype.😁

Nowadays, the younger generation is the one rocking these kicks (and hey, I’m right there with them—as Amanda Chase13 proudly shouted 😁), but they aren't doing it for the price tag anymore. It’s about an identity—a way of saying, "Look at me, I've arrived."🙂 Honestly, while it used to be cool, today it feels a bit performative. It's like the shoes are doing all the talking for you. "Just look at my sneakers and know exactly who I am." Good grief. Not many people will admit it, but that's the reality.
That’s my take on it.

As for Nike? I’ve got enough sticks of dynamite ready to go; if anyone can figure out a way to sneak into Indonesia and shut those factories down, it's us!😁

The whole reason Chuck Taylors became an icon of the American underground rock scene was specifically because they were affordable. Ian MacKaye and those guys picked them up because they were $15 or $20 back then; nowadays, kids buy them just because they look cool...

Well, I was being ORIGINAL here—I meant they started being worn because they were cheap, not talking about how it is today. :P

Then you should have just said "it was an original deal"--because they werebasically dirt cheap.😉

If someone is telling > that some jittery mailman is playing at Madison Square Garden on June 30th...

I really don't feel like starting a whole new thread over this.

I really don't feel like starting an entirely new thread just to cover that.

Thanks again for the heads-up! I probably won't make it because of my college coursework, but I think Tom might actually go.

Mr. Wrong said:Well, plenty of people do. I mean, why does everyone end up buying Chuck Taylors anyway?

Hear, hear... honestly, I don't know a single woman who doesn't own a pair of Converse—well, okay, my mom, my sister, and my grandma... they're the exceptions. But it's everywhere among guys too, even though I've personally never worn them once. I rocked some Nikes when I was a kid, but lately, I've been wearing these beat-up little skater Emericas for seven years straight—they're indestructible—and some black Adidas slip-ons that are just as tough...
I don't get why those Chucks are such a rip-off. They're almost never under $100... It’s pretty ironic, really—how they went from being cheap, decent footwear to this overpriced, trendy status symbol...

Total bull. You definitely know some, but they probably make up less than 10% of women. Either you only know three people, or you aren't paying much attention to footwear.😁

Hand on heart, these things are actually pretty comfy, setting aside all the marketing hype about world peace and whatever else.

In my opinion, they look better with Reeboks than any other sneaker out there. Not that Americans or the British ever really had an eye for design to begin with... sure, there were some decent Jaguars back in the fifties, but Americans are absolute hacks when it comes to aesthetics. They just got lucky with Converse. 🙄

The Italians, however, actually know how to design something beautiful—but what good is style when almost everything they make is cheap junk? Except for their speakers. [Brands like Klipsch and Sonus Faber absolutely destroy the competition in every single way possible 😍]

🙂

Look, don't even get me started on footwear. 🙂 Italian brands are easily the best in the world when it comes to both design and craftsmanship, but that’s probably not what this sub is for. 🙂

On another note, I actually think these Stella McCartney Reeboks are pretty cool, even if they aren't really my vibe... though I have no idea where they're from. 😬

Look, out of 260 million people, you're bound to find a few talented designers. Even the US has had its moments of brilliance. And honestly, when it comes to comfort, Chucks don't stand a chance against these. If anyone thinks otherwise, you can cut me where I'm thinnest—my waist, obviously. 😎

Mind you, I do have a pair of Chucks on my keychain. Does that count?
