Short Cuts

It was alright, though I’m not really a huge Altman fan—I think his other stuff hits harder. The vibe of this movie, with those overlapping stories and that whole depiction of middle-class depression, really reminded me of the movie Happiness. To me, that one is way, way better, even if it might have been influenced by Short Cuts a few years later.

Short Cuts is a solid film. Truly touching. I didn't catch it on any network broadcast; I saw it on a rental—honestly, seeing it once was more than enough for me.

When it comes to directors, Robert Altman stands right up there with David Lynch and, perhaps, Stanley Kubrick, as one of the very best in the business.

I finally watched it! And honestly? I loved it so much!
I’d heard all this hype about it beforehand—you know how it is when everyone tells you a movie is a masterpiece, and then you sit down only to feel totally let down by the buzz

My quick take:

Super fun movie with some pretty clever stuff going on. Since I’m a total sucker for zooms (you know, those optical push-ins and pull-outs), this one hit harder; the camera basically drags you deep into the heart of the Los Angeles Society. The acting and characters are unforgettable too. Tim Robbins is great as Gene Shepard, this lucky, womanizing cop, and you've got Frances McDormand looking incredible, plus Julianna Moore with that subtle, shy vibe. Robert Altman uses jump cuts to nail the rhythm, so it never feels slow—it's like we're just voyeurs peeking into the lives of LA locals. That earthquake at the end? It actually makes sense, almost poetically... especially when Gene Shepard shows off his hilarious side by casually telling everyone over the megaphone not to panic because an "earthquake is currently happening." An 7/10 rating, or maybe a 6 on the Richter scale, won't be as bad as some of the characters might think...
Paul Thomas Anderson's «Magnolia» will probably just be a pale attempt at copying this masterpiece.

I honestly can't wrap my head around why the geniuses over at the new cable networks would schedule a masterpiece like this for 2:00 AM🙄

It seems some of you have spent a little too much time looking at Nashville and even less time with The Long Goodbye or Thieves Like Us. Without those titles in the mix, nobody should really be attempting to rank an Altman "best of" list...
