It's worth a watch if you're looking for plenty of spooky scenes.

There are a few scenes from The Ring in Scary Movie 4... I honestly have no idea how I managed to watch it just three months ago without catching those references.

The first time I saw it, I thought it was a masterpiece—maybe 8 or 9 months ago

But I finally sat down to watch it again with my girlfriend recently, and honestly? It was a complete letdown... I mean, really?

Look, I’ll give credit where it's due—there were a handful of scenes that actually landed well enough, but as a whole? This movie is a complete mess. It’s totally disjointed and honestly doesn't make a lick of sense...

It was mostly just a slog...

Hmm. It's an American remake of a Japanese film, shot in Japan with some American actors... so of course it feels nonsensical. That said, those scenes in the attic and throughout the house were quite effective.

The movie is alright, mostly because it nails a few genuinely creepy moments...

But honestly, the plot is a mess and feels pretty disjointed overall...

I haven't actually sat down to watch it yet—it's just been gathering dust on my shelf for years now😢

I'm feeling meh about it—watched it right after The Ring, Phone, and Dark Water, and honestly, The Grudge was the worst of the bunch. Plus, I'm just not a fan of SM Gellar

Yeah, it totally feels disconnected, and The Grudge just looks like a cheap rip-off of the others—same tired color palette every single time

Phone isn't terrible, though it lacks a certain bite (and honestly, that subplot about the killer stalking the lead feels completely unnecessary). The Eye is decent enough, but it doesn't really function as a horror film; it plays out more like a drama (and the sequel is even less frightening).

Out of all those The Ring clones, I think the Thai film Shutter was far superior. Despite a plot that felt like a cliché mashup of "I Know What You Did Last Summer" and The Ring, the filmmakers managed to craft something genuinely excellent and terrifying. The Grudge isn't a total failure, but it’s essentially a carbon copy of the Japanese originals—specifically, the American version of The Grudge is just a compilation of scenes lifted from Ju-On (2000) and Ju-On: The Grudge (2003).

It's a good thing that the upcoming The Grudge 2 (releasing this October) features a completely different storyline than the Japanese sequels.

Shutter, Phone, and The Eye are honestly top-tier picks

The Ring originally hit theaters in the US back in October 2004—which means most people had already watched it on DVD over a year ago. I have no idea why they even bothered with a theatrical run when anyone interested had seen it by then. At the very least, I'm hoping an uncut version gets released on Blu-ray, similar to how they handled it in the States.

The sequel is scheduled to drop this October.

There’s definitely an uncut DVD out there—full 100% stuff. I actually bought the standard one first, then realized a week later there was an uncut version with a bonus disc... (picked it up over in Austria)

Man, I just caught this on AMC, and honestly? It’s the first horror flick in ages that actually managed to rattle my nerves properly. That ending though... man, it stays with you. Even if it does keep the tension cranked up the whole time. Such a killer movie. I feel like I’ve spent way too much time reading about those Japanese horror tropes online, but this was my first actual dive into them and I am totally floored. Still feeling a little creeped out even now... 😲
