Has it really been three whole pages and not a single soul has mentioned Cyndi Lauper???
Seriously, you guys!!!!!
I’m talking about Janet Jackson, Tina Turner,
Aretha Franklin,
Josip Lisac, and even Adele... does anyone else actually remember what David Bowie sounded like?

I should probably mention that Vonda Shepard (I think that’s her name, anyway) has such an incredibly beautiful voice... though I can't say I'm particularly fond of her actual songs... but if we're strictly talking about the quality of her vocals, she's got it👍 As for Josip Lisac, I get this nagging feeling that as the years go by, he's trying way too hard; he used to be so much better back in the day, not pushing his voice quite so aggressively like he does now...

bluejackal14 asserts:
As for Josip Lisac, I have the distinct impression that he’s become increasingly performative as the years go by; he used to be far superior, and he certainly didn't strain his voice quite so much back then.

I find myself holding the exact opposite view. To my mind, her artistry improves with every passing year; she has significantly expanded the sheer range and power of her voice compared to, say, her work in the seventies. Perhaps that perspective is mine alone.

Honestly, I feel like Josip Lisac actually sounds better today than he did, say, twenty years ago.
I’m not entirely sure I’d go as far as calling his singing style "affected"—to me, it’s always just had that signature nasal quality. But there is absolutely no denying that he’s a singular, eccentric presence in his own unique way.
Every time I hear "Ave Maria," I still get chills...

Actually, let me reconsider. Truly captivating female vocals:

Erykah Badu
Sade
Nina Simone

Björk gets on my nerves, right behind her is Josip Lisac. Just too much indulgence...
Mariah Carey doesn't sing. She squeals. There's nothing impressive about it.

Look, regardless of how I feel about the whole Josip Lisac phenomenon, the woman can absolutely shred. My only real regret is that she didn't get to record more great songs.

Personally, I think I prefer those huskier voices, maybe more like Gladys Knight.
Actually, I feel like all those soulful singers with deeper tones have this certain quality to their voices that just sounds better
compared to the high-pitched ones... though Teena Marie has a really high voice, but it's super interesting.
The worst ones have to be those pop acts like Severina... I guess if anyone is actually listening to them, they probably need to get their hearing checked... it's just awful.

Good grief, I just realized I completely overlooked Hope Sandoval. My mistake.
An angelic voice!

Could there be anything more soothing than the timeless, gentle melodies of Norah Jones?
Is there anything more captivating than the sheer presence of Shirley Manson?
Could there be any artist more captivating than Laura Pausini?
Is there anything quite as evocative as the soulful resonance of Cesária Évora?
I can't help myself, but I just get the chills whenever I hear Celine Dion.
Is there anything more captivating than the ethereal presence of Enya?

Hands down, Ani DiFranco is at the top of my list. After her, I’d probably go with Tracy Chapman, then Imogen Heap, Hope Sandoval, Cat Power, Anouk, and Heather Nova. Then the ladies from Sleater-Kinney, Joni Mitchell, Natalie Merchant, The Good Tanyas, and Eva Martin...

As for the talent back home:
Barbra Streisand
Valerija (who really knows how to belt out the blues 😁 )
Doris Day (she’s basically family to me—my grandmother and her old girlfriends were actually close friends 😁 😁 😁 )
and that woman who used to sing in Nola—she had such an incredible voice, and if I had to guess, she probably still does
...
Moving on to international artists:
right now I'm thinking of
Erykah Badu
CeeLo Green
Norah Jones
Skin
Rusty Springfield
Aretha Franklin
India (not the country, obviously, but India who sang for Mondo Grosso and Maw)
Roisin Murphy (from Moloko)
and Kylie has a great voice (like on "Where the Wild Roses Grow"), even if she's a bit much for my taste
...those are just the names currently floating through my head

Yeah... I can't believe nobody’s brought up Tamara Obrovac yet.
Honestly, what she does with her voice is just unreal.
It also made me think of that woman who sings with Quartet Sensitive—she has an absolutely killer voice.
