It's true that the shift from Heavy Metal toward Black Metal really started gaining momentum with Mercyful Fate, Venom, and King Diamond. Since Varg Vikernes was born in 1973, he definitely wasn't just some kid back then 😁
The Black Metal we recognize today actually began
With Varg Vikernes, Burzum, Dark Throne, and Mayhem. You could also include older acts like Uruk-hai and Old Funeral.
But you can't really count Mercyful Fate, Venom, or King Diamond as Black Metal by today's standards; the sound has changed so much since then.

Blizzard Beast said:When I say an album is "cult," I don't mean it’s just some obscure thing gathering dust on a shelf in a local record store... I mean the damn thing is incredible and has captured a specific group of people who absolutely worship it.
Basically, calling something cult is more about it being legendary.

For example,
Dissection - Storm of the Light's Bane
Slayer-Reign in Blood

Look, all I'm trying to tell you is stop talking nonsense.
I get what you're aiming for, really,

but saying that is like claiming that when you say "this apple is red," you're implying that you actually prefer eating pears.
"Cult" and "legendary" aren't even the same thing...

Immortal really lost their edge with those last few albums, just like Emperor did. 😁
They totally sold out. 👍

But let’s be real—Varg Vikernes was born in '73, so he definitely wasn't some wide-eyed kid when all this started bubbling up. 😁
The actual Black Metal genre, at least as most people define it today, really kicked off
with Varg and Burzum, along with Dark Throne and Mayhem. If you want to get technical, you could even throw in those older acts like Uruk-hai and Old Funeral.
But you can't really lump Mercyful Fate, Venom, or King Diamond into the modern Black Metal conversation; the sound has evolved so much since then that they're in a completely different league.

It honestly cracks me up seeing that a supposed "true" Black Metal head like you hasn't even heard of Celtic Frost, Hellhammer, or Bathory...

I mean, sure, you could try to draw a line between Mercyful Fate or King Diamond and Black Metal just because of their Satanic lyrics, but musically? Not even close.

Venom and Celtic Frost are basically proto-black—more like this dark, gritty version of Thrash if you ask me.

The Black Metal we recognize today is built almost entirely on the foundation laid by Hellhammer (think that Apocalyptic Raids EP from '84) and Bathory (specifically Under the Sign of Black Mark from 1987). Euronymous just took that blueprint and cranked the intensity way up to make it more extreme. Then you had Immortal and Dark Throne jump on board to fuel the movement, while Varg was essentially just riding the wave the whole time. 🙂

I’m pretty impressed you managed to pull that off from one of those million metal sites on the Internet 🙄
I know about Hellhammer and Bathory, but they were way too underground for the general public until Dark Throne, Burzum, and that whole crew hit the scene. Plus, that was all before the murders and church burnings started 😁

I really messed up 😁
Back when 1987 Bathory recorded Under the Sign... Varg Vikernes was only 14 years old when he put together the original Aske with those three tracks—Screams from the Forests Unknown, Lord of the Depths, and Spell of Destruction 😁
He didn't technically release them until two years later on some demos, but just think about where Hellhammer and Bathory were when he was only 14...

The only way you can link Mercyful Fate or King Diamond to heavy metal is through their satanic lyrics; musically, they just don't fit the vibe.

Venom and Celtic Frost are basically proto-black—more like dark-sounding thrash if you ask me.

The heavy metal sound we know today is mostly built on the foundation laid by Hellhammer (Apocalyptic Raids EP, 1984) and Bathory (Under the Sign of Black Mark, 1987). Euronymous just took that specific style and cranked it up to be even more extreme. Then you had Immortal and Dark Throne join the movement, while Varg Vikernes was really just some guy along for the ride.🙂

I'm with you on this one.👍

Seriously, you are peaking in stupidity right now.
Just tell me—who exactly did they sell out to?

Just tell me who they sold out to.

To everyone who bought what they were selling, I suppose.😁

It looks like they sold out and started playing commercial stuff just to move more units. Take Sons of Northern Darkness, for example—they've got that typical sound that appeals to every teenager between 14 and 17 who wants to buy an album. Why didn't Dark Throne sell out and start playing that pseudo-heavy metal 😁
? Emperor is nothing more than a police informant 🙂

I don't get why Dark Throne didn't sell out and start playing that pseudo-black style instead. 😁
Emperor is basically just a tool for the cops. 🙂

Man, you are talking nonsense. Sons of Northern Darkness is a genius album; you're just being way too stuck-up and won't let yourself enjoy it because then you wouldn't be that "hardcore" poser. The same goes for Damned in Black and At the Heart of Winter.
I'm not even going to bring up Emperor because it's clearly impossible to have a real conversation with you.

That's just how it is, there's really nothing more to say. ironfalcon18 and Dark Throne are the absolute best in Heavy Metal. 😁
Immortal and Emperor have totally sold out, and honestly, Satyricon has been heading down that same path lately.

I don't know, maybe Satyricon-Nemesis Divin, or Burzum - Aske, or whatever... there's plenty of good stuff out there if you actually look.
😁

But let's be real, you haven't heard 99% of it...😁

I’m not going to pick a "top 5" because I can't narrow it down to just five albums and call them the absolute best. It really just comes down to personal taste.
Instead, I'll just list five that I personally love:
1. Metallica-Kill Em All
2. Metallica-Ride the Lightning
3. Metallica-Master of Puppets
4. Metallica-And Justice for All
5. Metallica-The Black Album
🙏

Maybe it seems a bit one-dimensional, but I can't help myself.
