Good grief, we really are a primitive nation. Especially you metalheads—so closed-minded and flat, acting like electronic music isn't even real music. GET OVER IT!

Electronic music moved into a whole new stage of evolution ages ago, whether you lot care to admit it or not!

Electronics represent the ultimate goal—the ability to create exactly what we imagine!

I am not disparaging other genres (not that you aren't constantly belittling electronic music), I am simply attempting to demonstrate its inherent value.

I have written extensively about electronic music on the old IMF site, and I previously concluded in a thread that 95% of the users there don't listen to electronic music at all.

So, the sad truth remains: the vast majority doesn't even consider it to be music.

If the moderators of this thread, or even the admins, share that sentiment, then they should just go ahead and create an "Electronic Music" section.

Though, I highly doubt they will actually do it...

Do you honestly believe you possess more worth if you play a guitar rather than a keyboard?

My brother has been in the guitar world for years, and I can tell you, it is the most superficial scene on the planet! What, do redheaded punks just love long hair and guitars? Of course they do, but the main thing is that those holding the guitars look down on anyone else—it’s all just pure vanity!

😠 😠 😠 😠 😠 😠

I really dig how you put all that together (seriously, I love the delivery) 👍 , but I’m not totally sold on the actual substance—at least not all of it. I have to admit, a few of those points hit a little too close to home. It's painful, honestly. 😳 😢

Electronic music honestly doesn't belong in the music conversation at all!!! It'd be much better off sitting right next to the dad jokes!! 😁

I mean, it really depends on what kind of electronic stuff you've actually listened to and how much you even know about the genre, to be honest.
Generalizing like that just doesn't make sense—every single genre has its share of absolute garbage and its gems, you know?

Electronic music can be incredibly melodic and complex, or fast and powerful, but it can also be boring and mindless (especially some of the newer derivatives, if you ask me).

It’s kind of like someone saying they don't like guitars at all—like, sure, if you aren't feeling Metallica, maybe you're more into some unknown bands or something, or maybe you're an old-school Deep Purple fan while someone else lives for Slayer or Pantera. There are all these different subgenres of rock and metal, and it's the exact same deal with electronic music.

I saw someone bashing Kraftwerk the other day, which I found pretty hilarious and honestly just ignorant, but hey, they're entitled to their opinion, I guess.

Personally, I say—electronic music is where it's at!

someone out there was trash-talking Kraftwerk... honestly, it’s hilarious. Just pure ignorance on their part, but hey, whatever, people are allowed to be wrong if they want to...

The real question is, does anyone actually have a right to an opinion? I feel like "personal opinions" are way overrated... I mean, every idiot under the sun has one. And what even *is* an opinion anyway? Ugh, such a deep, heavy word...😕

Such a heavy, philosophical word to toss around, isn't it?😕

I don't follow?

Back in the day on the old IMF boards, we more than proved to you that a huge chunk of this community actually listens to electronic music—and honestly, it's the kind of stuff you barely even know exists. So, let's not be condescending, okay?...

I mean, it’s hard to argue with the whole "everyone's entitled to their own opinion" thing. Honestly? I actually agree with that sentiment...
BUT—
those "opinions" usually aren't even based on actual knowledge. People don't think, they just perform. Like, someone asks you what you think about some niche topic you know nothing about, and instead of just saying "I don't know," you suddenly cook up some answer just to look cool or fit the vibe. It’s all just ego trips, really. Or people just pick a side to protect their brand—like if you're a die-hard metalhead, you feel forced to say electronic music is trash just to stay "on brand." Then you've got the trolls who just invent opinions specifically to stir the pot and cause drama. You know what I mean? That's all I'm getting at...😎

Back in the day (on the old IMF site), we proved quite clearly that a huge number of people on this board listen to electronic music—music that you, for the most part, know absolutely nothing about. So, cut the attitude, alright?

You haven't proven me wrong about a single thing.

Real proof would be seeing new threads about electronic music popping up at a rate even remotely comparable to any other genre. The reality is that NOBODY here actually discusses electronic music. At best, once every two months, someone starts a thread questioning whether electronic music even makes sense as a concept. This is an online community, and my assertion remains that 95% of the users here don't listen to electronic music. The fact that many people might listen to it without ever mentioning it has zero bearing on my point.

By the way, what is it? Are we back to the constant bickering that seems to plague this entire site? Now I suppose I have no right to an opinion because I lack expertise in some niche electronic subgenre.

It is always possible to find something someone else knows nothing about and use it as a weapon to make yourself feel superior. Therefore... hush now.

It seems you're struggling a bit, isn't it?

Well, what can I do? There aren't any topics here that actually interest me, and even if I decide to start one, I end up being the only person replying...

My previous thread about TLB barely got one or two replies, so I just gave up on it...

Colonija is electronic... but so is Moloko!

Dire Straits are rockers... But damn it... even Thompson is a rocker!!!

They've got drums, long-haired guitarists, bass players, the whole nine yards... Right?

And what was I saying about musical snobbery? 😁

Generalizing just doesn't work—every single genre has its trash and its gems.

I completely agree that generalizing is a bad move!

Everything I said about electronic music was based on what I’ve actually heard (obviously), and since I mostly ran into the bottom-of-the-barrel stuff, it totally turned me off. Now I've got these prejudices where I don't even want to give it a chance, even if someone tells me there's good stuff out there.
🙄

Anyway, I’m not as closed-minded as some people out there!!!
If an electronic track has a decent theme, melody, or rhythm, I can tolerate it, but I'm still not exactly putting it on my playlist.

Maybe... someday!

You just said the exact same thing as Chloe Ross7 (you just added examples to back it up)!!!
I'm guessing you mean Colonia and Glupson are the bottom tier of their genre, while Dire Straits and Moloko are actually good!!

I'm with you on this—generalizing is a bad move. Every single genre has its gems and its absolute garbage!!! 👍

But for the record, Thompson isn't a rocker. Having "drums, long-haired guitarists, and a bassist" isn't enough to earn that label in my book. If anyone were to try and categorize him as rock (which I never would), they could only call it ethno-right-wing-quasi-rock!!! 🙂

People who can't stand electronic music are usually just stuck in the past—obsessed with "the good old days" (which is fine, whatever)—and they're terrified of anything that feels even slightly unfamiliar. And let’s get one thing straight: electronic music isn't even "new." It's been around forever. These folks just recoil at the word "futurism" because they don't get it. They miss out on that specific rush—that feeling of being totally plugged into the universe, or that massive surge of emotion you get when you're lost in the concept of distant, far-off worlds... or maybe they just get hit with a wave of anxiety whenever they watch Blade Runner.

Every genre of music is its own beast—totally unique. Arguing about which one is better? Honestly, it’s a complete waste of breath. You aren't going to reach any real conclusions that way—it just turns into people airing their personal grievances and acting like their taste is some kind of moral high ground.

Frank Howard79 said:People who typically dislike electronic music are usually those deeply anchored in nostalgia for bygone eras—which is fine, I suppose—but they harbor a fear of anything unfamiliar. They aren't afraid of the technology itself, since electronic music isn't some recent novelty, but rather they recoil at the mere mention of "futurism." They lack that specific sensation, that profound feeling of merging the unknown with the entire universe, or that rush of emotion one gets when experiencing distant, distant worlds... or perhaps the atmosphere of Blade Runner simply triggers an innate sense of anxiety in them.

Every genre of music possesses its own distinct identity, making any debate regarding its worth essentially pointless. Such discussions rarely yield constructive conclusions; instead, they merely serve as a vehicle for people to vent their own personal biases and cinematic fixations.

Regrettably, many people make a massive error by judging electronic music based solely on what is spoon-fed to them via television and radio, which is mostly garbage.

It stands to reason, really; someone who doesn't actively listen to electronic music isn't going to go out of their way to hunt for it, so they judge everything based on what commercial media pushes.

Electronic music boasts numerous titans and masterpieces—think Mike Oldfield, Vangelis, Jean-Michel Jarre, and other classics—and even in more recent times, the field has expanded significantly. In truth, there are more great works than we can possibly fathom, making it genuinely difficult to keep up. There are far too many sub-genres to track, let alone every single individual artist...

For instance, I could quite easily refer to Vangelis as the Mozart Classical Era equivalent, or rather, the Mozart Electronic Music.

I generally find myself in social circles that favor rock, metal, and those other "traditional" genres—groups that frequently disparage electronic music by claiming it isn't "real" music.

In a fair and just world (read: America), these people would show at least a modicum of respect toward the genre and simply stick to their own preferences.

I truly value the entirety of the musical spectrum, from rock to metal and everything else, and I believe I am capable of discerning quality from mediocrity—I possess at least that minimum threshold of knowledge required to form a legitimate and objective assessment.

Most of you who do not listen to electronic music lack that foundational knowledge, and therein lies the distinction. Consequently, you have no standing to draw conclusions—though I give credit to the exceptions who are actually acquainted with the genre and are thus qualified to offer a proper critique.
