Star Wars vs. Star Trek

Star Trek seriously needs a Thrawn (and maybe a Pellaeon 😁)
I’d love to see how a guy like him would actually run the USS Enterprise.

Pellaeon is the only character worth following in that entire Expanded Universe. He’s actually human. Though I wouldn't be surprised if some future book reveals he’s suddenly a Force powerhouse just to join the endless parade of Mary Sue characters who somehow outclass Luke Skywalker.

The whole Star Wars Expanded Universe suffers from this blatant favoritism. A new author arrives, introduces a new character, and suddenly they’re an unstoppable Force prodigy (like Zahn’s Emperor's Hand). I remember a brilliant piece of fan fiction that tore this trope to shreds. Jack "The Jackhammer" Bigdikkus 😁 I’d post it here, but it’s too long—about five pages.

I’m thinking maybe in some later Expanded Universe book or whatever, William Morris2 gathers up what's left of the Empire and tries once again in some totally pointless attempt to crush the Republic and turn it into a complete circus.

I can't say for sure; I don't read the books, just the synopses.
As I recall, Gilad eventually realized the fight was futile, so he retreated to some corner of the galaxy the Empire secured through an agreement.
Credit where credit is due: after "Return of the Jedi" and the Emperor's death, the Empire managed to hold on for 20 years without a ruler.The guy was good, no doubt 'bout it.
Those editors over at Lucasfilm deserve a firing squad.
And here's another interesting fact: every time a new book comes out, the Empire returns even stronger than before.😁

May I offer a small thought here? This whole topic feels a bit absurd because you simply cannot compare things that aren't comparable.

Once the Emperor supposedly died, the Empire wasn't even the same entity anymore, and matters became incredibly complicated. It doesn't make much sense to try and summarize such a massive shift in just one short sentence, though I think it would be quite interesting to have a more serious discussion about this with a larger group of people who are deeply familiar with the non-film Star Wars storylines...

Gilad gathered what was left of the Imperial Army—who were actually stronger than ever at that point—and retreated into what we now call the Imperial Remnant.
I'm not entirely sure if they stepped up to help the Republic during the Yuuzhan Vong Invasion.

That sounds like the only logical move to me. Why the hell would you waste resources fighting the Republic over a handful of solar systems when you could just grab a chunk of territory—uh, space—and live in peace? But hey, rapidstag74 might have a point here 😁; it’s pretty wild that the Empire managed to hold it together for 20 years without an Emperor. Maybe I’m just old school, but isn't it basically a requirement for any nation calling itself a Kingdom to actually have a King?

Sci-fi: built on ideas of things we know, making it feel almost possible.

You should be comparing Star Wars to Lord of the Rings instead.
