Best portable Wi-Fi hotspots?

Instead of those old-school USB dongles, I’ve been sold this MiFi device—the kind that supposedly handles up to ten devices at once. You just set the unit down nearby to pick up the mobile signal, which I guess is safer since those sticks always seem to get bent or broken if you aren't careful. What’s your experience been like with these MiFi units?

Well, it really depends on what kind of device you’re looking at. There are dozens of models floating around out there right now. You'll definitely find some high-end gems, but there's plenty of cheap junk too... just like anything else you buy these days.

I’ve got this AT&T MiFi device I pick up from T-Mobile. It handles up to ten devices at once, which is fine. It works okay, I suppose—pretty straightforward, nothing fancy. The only real headache is when you find yourself in an area where the signal is spotty or if the local infrastructure just isn't up to par.
