Alright, look, I’m a total tech novice here. IT background, but... yeah.

So, there's this guy two offices down from me who basically thinks he's the main character in a movie. He just loves the sound of his own voice, you know? Constant phone calls, shouting down the hallway for whatever reason... it's a lot. I can't focus on my work, I can't study, I can't even think straight.

I noticed one of my coworkers has these big over-ear headphones hanging over her monitor.

What should I be looking for? Like, what's the deal with brands, what features actually matter, etc.? I need help. And I'm assuming that thing works via USB mode? Just plug it into the laptop and... I don't know. Educate me, please. Also, where can I find a decent deal? I'm fine with just ordering something online.

You’ll want to plug them into the headphone jack—that little round port you see everywhere—since those USB versions tend to be pricier due to the built-in sound card, though what you really need to focus on is finding some solid closed back headphones like these:

After all, isn't the whole point to get a pair that actually blocks out the rest of the world?

so, this one comes with a "plug," right? And that’s what goes into my laptop—that little round jack with the headphone icon next as well?

this is the laptop I'm using - that first little hole on the right is where it goes, yeah?

Well, yeah, exactly. With headphones like these, you often run into needing an adapter for those larger 1/4 inch jacks too:

...I sent you the link for my own pair, but you might want to look into some other "studio" style headphones instead. Honestly, Superlux models are incredibly budget-friendly while still being more than good enough for most people:
