4-pin ATX to 8-pin motherboard connector?

Alright, I need to swap out my motherboard, but there's a catch: my power supply only has one 4-pin connector
and the board requires an 8-pin ATX connector.
So, here’s the deal: can I actually plug this 4-pin into the 8-pin slot on the motherboard, or am I absolutely forced to use an adapter?
I’m really trying to dodge using an adapter if there's any way around it. Local repair shops are probably useless right now, so if I have to order an adapter from Washington, D.C., the shipping alone will cost more than the damn thing, not to mention the wait.

For context, the motherboard that just died was an N/A (it won't send any signal to the monitor, nothing—not via integrated graphics, not via the PCI-E card). I'm looking at replacing it with a GA-MA785GT-UD3H.
The CPU is an Intel Core i5 (on the old board, which had a beta BIOS 2.39, this LGA 1151 processor actually worked despite the board being older).
My PSU is 400W (already tested, it works fine).

Anyway, if anyone can help or give me some advice regarding this connector, I'd appreciate it.

It should work without any major issues... but if I were you, I’d look into getting an adapter or maybe just a brand new power supply down the road.

Hey there. I’m running an ASRock Z75 Pro3 motherboard that features an 8-pin connector, but my power supply only provides a 4-pin plug. I’ve got that 4-pin plugged into the board and everything has been running perfectly fine for about a year and a half now. My setup uses an Intel Core i5. That said, you really need to be careful about where you seat that 4-pin connector; you should definitely double-check the motherboard manual first. I've included a photo of my own board below, which shows exactly which pins that 4-pin connector is meant to occupy.

Here’s the info for your motherboard... This specifically applies to version 1.0. I’d highly recommend double-checking which exact revision you’re working with, though this connector ought to be standardized across the board. Still, better safe than sorry.

Since this motherboard is used, there’s zero protection on the connector (it was probably hooked up to an 8-pin, so the protection is gone).
Now, if I'm reading this photo right, does it need to go to pins 4 and 8, or am I totally off base? What do you think?
Do me a favor and try to find the pinout for your board so we can compare it to mine.
P.S. Mine is rev 1.0.

Believe it or not, my motherboard manual is surprisingly useless—it doesn't even include a proper pinout diagram. It just gives this vague instruction about which specific pins need the 4-pin connector. Based on how your manual is laid out, I’d guess you're looking at pins 3 through 8. Specifically, it's likely 3, 4, 7, and 8.

Thanks, got it fixed. There was really only one way to jam it in there—I didn't even realize until I actually tried forcing it.
The connectors aren't square; they’re slightly rounded, just like you see in the photo. It won't go in any other way than
exactly how it fits
(pins 3, 4, 7, and 8).

Glad you got that sorted out... I actually ended up with the exact opposite setup, pins 1, 2, 5, and 6 are the ones acting up on my end. Just figured I'd mention it in case anyone else runs into the same headache...
