So apparently, people are claiming the new flick insults the fans of Ghostbusters (2016) by basically ignoring its existence and pivoting back to the "original universe." Which is hilarious, because ignoring the "original universe" was supposedly such a huge, "progressive" move for Ghostbusters (2016). Seriously, how does a movie with all those "progressive" fans still end up being such a massive flop?

Apparently, the new movie is supposedly offending fans because it ignores Ghostbusters (2016) and goes back to the "original universe." It’s funny though—ignoring the "original universe" was considered so incredibly "progressive" for Ghostbusters (2016)... so how did that movie end up being such a massive flop despite having all those hardcore "progressive" fans behind it?

Honestly, this is just a textbook example of why the remake went south. Beyond the fact that the movie was just bad and lacked any real wit, the cast and crew were constantly attacking anyone who pointed out it wasn't funny... labeling people as sexists, racists, or just plain stupid if they didn't see how "brilliant" the film was. And once it became obvious that the failure had nothing to do with the female characters and everything to do with the movie being poorly made, they still tried to push the narrative that everyone was just being sexist or racist. To me, her frustration feels a bit like... "hey, we planned two more movies, I needed that big paycheck in my bank account, so screw you for making me lose money."...

Even Jason Reitman weighed in on this:

“I have so much respect for what Paul created with those brilliant actresses, and would love to see more stories from them. However, this new movie will follow the trajectory of the original film,”

The whole point is that even though he respects the original movies, the "progressives" just can't handle his idea of making a sequel that actually ties back to the originals.

I honestly couldn't care less what the crazies in America want or don't want. It seems Hollywood is finally waking up to the reality that you can't just force a specific brand of insanity on the entire world and expect people to swallow it.
Comic books were the first to see their readership crater when they tried this tactic, and now various film franchises are losing their fanbases too—think Stranger Things, Star Wars, or Ghostbusters.
The word on the street is that these franchises might actually try to get back on track by prioritizing what the core fans actually want before catering to the newcomers (and let’s be honest, the original fans outnumber them significantly).

The massive success of shows like Stranger Things only proves my point.
