As the title implies, my internet connection keeps dropping out constantly. I'm using an Ethernet cable at my college dorm, and the connection crashes roughly every 5 to 10 minutes.

Once it goes down, there isn't much I can do except reboot the laptop. I'm running Windows 7 and the built-in troubleshooter is useless. If I try to disable the LAN in the network settings, I can't turn it back on; everything just freezes up. Even the laptop won't shut down properly because it seems to hang indefinitely...

The Wi-Fi on my laptop works perfectly fine since I can connect without issue when I'm back home. (I can't use Wi-Fi on this specific campus network, though).

There might be one other important detail to note. For instance, if I start streaming a game and leave it alone, the connection stays stable without any drops. A stream can run for two hours straight without a single hiccup. But as soon as I spend five minutes just browsing websites, that yellow exclamation mark pops up on the network icon and says "No network access."

At the moment the connection breaks, nothing seems to work. Windows doesn't even recognize if I've unplugged the cable or anything else. My only option is to disable the LAN in the settings, force a shutdown on the laptop (since I can't re-enable the LAN after disabling it), and then enable it once the system restarts... though even that doesn't always fix it.

I have already attempted a full reinstallation of Windows, yet the problem persists. It's unclear whether this is a Windows issue or a software conflict...

Naturally, I also tried using a different cable and even plugged into a port in a different room where the internet works fine, but the result is exactly the same.

Is everything running okay for everyone else? I’ve got this nagging feeling that something is seriously funky with their network setup... honestly, I'm starting to wonder if the LAN chip on my motherboard is just straight-up dying on me...

I tested this on other browsers. It isn't a bad idea, but unfortunately, I am seeing the same thing... Internet Explorer crashes immediately, and while Mozilla and Chrome are a bit more stable, they still crash eventually.

It seems to be working fine for everyone else... I don't know much about hardware, but I'm starting to worry that something might have actually failed. Does anyone have any suggestions before I just take it to a repair shop?

Don't go running to a repair shop just yet, hold on... Does anyone there have a network admin, or who even handles your IT? Just give their support line a call and ask. It could easily be some setting in the router or something similar...

Welcome to Windows 7

Is there a Java update?
An Adobe Flash Player update?

I also need help setting up static IP addresses for my connection.
