If a team like that just completely implodes—think like Cameroon getting absolutely dismantled by Brazil—and some random underdog manages to slot in five goals, it’s game over.

Whatever else happened...

Looking back at previous tournaments...

In 2006, Trinidad was an absolute joke, yet they managed a 0-0 draw against Sweden and only conceded four goals total throughout the run.

In 2010, New Zealand was the biggest disaster waiting to happen, and they didn't lose a single match.

In 2014, Honduras and Costa Rica were the prime candidates to get knocked out early, but look at Costa Rica—they actually stormed their way into the quarterfinals.

But let's be real: none of those teams made it to the World Cup with a negative goal difference or after playing through a qualifying round that was a complete embarrassment.🙏

Russia vs. Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia to score @2.25

I have zero faith in this Russian squad. They’re under massive pressure today to beat Saudi Arabia, who technically look like the easy target in this group.
But let’s be real, the Russian defense isn't exactly a fortress. They played two friendlies and leaked goals to both Austria and Turkey. Throw in a total flop like Iker Casillas in goal and that old dinosaur Sergei Ignashevich in the backline...
The Saudis have been busy, playing five friendlies over the last month. The only time they failed to find the net was against Peru (0-3), but they dropped two on Alzir and Greece, and one each on Italy and Germany.
I caught the second half of their game against Germany, and the second the Germans took their foot off the gas, the Saudis showed they can fly on a counterattack. They lack a bit of clinical finishing, but one lucky strike against Russia should be enough. At these odds, it’s a lock worth a shot.

Does anyone know where I can find a place to bet on the opening kickoff for Russia vs. Saudi Arabia? I don't see it listed in our local sportsbook, yet it’s showing up for all the other matches. When the hell did they pull it from the menu?

They didn't even bother putting her in—everyone knows Saudi Arabia is going to be starting strong anyway!

I see people mentioning odds of 1.65 for Saudi Arabia while everything else sits around 1.9 to 1.9. Honestly, I have no idea where anyone is finding those lines.🙏

They pulled it from DraftKings and FanDuel yesterday... it's still up on Bet365 and 1xBet at 1.66 and 1.90
But that's just gambling, as far as I can tell—if they just flip a coin to decide who kicks off, why on earth would you bother betting on it? 🤷

@jadewolf16/">@@jadewolf16 don't talk nonsense, they actually flip a coin! I've been watching clips from the last ten major tournaments (World Cup and Euro). At the last Euro, the Frenchmen kicked off first.

It’s strictly a World Cup tradition.
We missed out last time—but looking at the history, it happened in 12 of the last 13 tournaments, or something to that effect.

I think it didn't happen at the last one, but it was there in 12 out of the last 13 editions or something along those lines.

Yeah, that's true, but from what I've gathered looking back at the footage, the home team always seems to win the coin toss. 🤷 🤷
What happens if the away team actually wins the toss?

@jadewolf16/">@@jadewolf16, don't talk nonsense. It's a coin toss, sure, but I've spent plenty of time reviewing footage from the last ten major tournaments, including the World Cup and Euro. At the last Euro, the Frenchmen kicked off from the center.

Thanks!
Look, I realize it comes down to a coin toss, and I know they've even tweaked the regulations so it isn't entirely up to the players anymore. But the kickoff itself... well, as James Taylor3 pointed out, it's all about tradition. 😉

but what happens if the visiting team wins the coin flip?

Whoever wins the toss gets to make the call. They implemented that rule several years ago. Up until then, you could pretty much tell what was happening during the Champions League matches.
Just look at the opening match of the last World Cup between Brazil and the US—did Brazil get the ball?

Just sign up there; they have recordings of every single World Cup match, so you can go watch it for yourself.

edit: Brazil won the coin toss and Silva picked the side, it's clearly visible. Again, I'm asking, what if the US captain had won the toss? He probably would have picked the exact same side anyway, wouldn't he?

Remember that last World Cup opener, Brazil vs. USA? Did Brazil get the ball first?

The Americans got the ball. I know because that was my very first winning parlay of that tournament... 😁

That is precisely why I am inquiring. I see James Taylor3 mentioned that while it didn't hit last time, they managed to land 12 out of 13. If this truly boils down to nothing more than pure luck, then why on earth aren't the odds sitting at 1.90-1.90 today? 😉

Edit: Brazil won the coin toss, and Silva made his choice—it’s perfectly clear if you watch closely. I find myself wondering once again: what would have happened if our captain had won that toss instead? He likely would have picked the exact same side, wouldn't he?

Ever since they tightened the rulebook, that's just how things play out. But then again, what chance do they really have to negotiate the outcome to be exactly what they desire?😉

Gerald Carter53 said:That’s just how it is since they started tightening up the rules. But honestly, what do they care? They probably just shake hands behind closed doors to make sure everything goes exactly the way they want it to. 😉

I don't know, I'm not entirely confident enough about this one to drop serious cash on it, but you really have to at least give it a shot 🙂
look, bet365 just bumped the odds for Saudi Arabia up to 1.80

👍

I mean, seriously—can we talk about how much this changes everything? It’s absolutely wild! I honestly didn't see this coming at all—like, at all! Who would have thought? It feels like the whole game just shifted under our feet, doesn't it? Honestly, it's kind of hilarious if you think about it—all that build-up just to end up here! Makes you wonder what else is going to happen next, right? I'm totally pumped to see where this goes!

Everything you said is spot on, man. Over the last few championships, we've seen plenty of times where the underdog played right out of the center, but let me tell you straight: for the last two or three tournaments, there was definitely money being thrown around, and the home team walked away with the win every single time. Now, as for all this stuff about FIFA, UEFA, backroom deals, and those unwritten rules—I don't know much about it, and frankly, I don't buy into all those conspiracy theories from the pundits claiming they're pumping in massive amounts of cash to tilt the scales.

So, has nobody here actually played a real match before? The rule is simple: whoever wins the coin toss picks their side, then the ball goes to the team that lost the toss... and we all know the odds on a coin flip are roughly 😉
