Hey,

I just picked up a new AMD Radeon HD 6750 and a new Samsung S24A350H monitor. Everything was installed perfectly today, but now I have no sound!
Naturally, I uninstalled all my old ATI drivers before starting (I was using an AMD Radeon HD 3870 previously, which I replaced due to overheating issues). After the installation, I registered the product with XFX/AMD and downloaded all the latest drivers, yet the audio is gone. I had sound perfectly fine prior to the installation.
Any advice?

The 6750 pulls about 86W at max TDP, while the GTS 450 hits 106W. Honestly, that makes the 6750 a much better fit for your current setup. Performance-wise, they're pretty neck-and-neck, though the 6750 usually edges out the competition by a few percent.

... alright, just tell me one more thing—can the 6750 actually handle newer titles? Like the new Need for Speed or Battlefield 3?

Given the CPU you're running, stick with a 550Ti or a 6770... anything stronger is just a waste of money.

Besides, that processor only pulls 65W.

That's basically a 560 without the 😁 and puts it right in the same ballpark as a 6870.

It'll run at 800x600 without any issues. 🙂

Honestly, it’s probably better to just suggest a whole new rig so they can actually play Battlefield 3 on max settings smoothly.

... it's the power supply. =)

Just grab a new PSU. Don't bother with anything beefier than your current GPU, because that power supply won't handle the load.

... also, my power supply is 400W... I guess that might be enough, maybe?

It's also cheaper than the 6870 🙂

Doesn't matter. With his processor, he'd be better off with a weaker card anyway.

The link was working when I first posted it.

Looks like the sale ended; they probably just updated the price. Here's the $33new one

Hey there! Good day to you...
I'm looking for a new graphics card... somewhere around the... $333
My current rig...
The e6750... man, that chip brings back some serious memories... just sitting there thinking about those old builds.
Just an old HP motherboard with an Intel Q35 chipset... nothing fancy, just sitting there...
Just 3GB of RAM... barely enough to keep things moving these days...
So, I was looking at this Cooler Master 400W power supply... just one of those things you start thinking about when you're tinkering around with an old build... turns out they're pretty decent for basic setups... nothing crazy, but solid enough if you aren't trying to run a NASA supercomputer or anything like that... just a little something to keep the lights on...
Right now, I'm rocking a 7900GS with 256MB of RAM... obviously running on PCI-E... 😁
Just picked up an HP L1908 19" monitor... runs at 1440x900. Solid little thing...
So, I've been sitting here thinking... what kind of GPU would actually be the best move for me right now? I was leaning towards picking up a GTX 550 Ti, or maybe something else in that same ballpark... just weighing my options...
I guess there's really no point in grabbing something more powerful... I mean, she wouldn't even be able to touch the performance of a better card given her current PC setup and that monitor resolution. It just wouldn't make any sense...
Does ATI have anything that hits that same level?...
Thanks for all the replies!

Nothing beats this. Everything else is just extra cash in your pocket.

Do you think I could actually run Battlefield 3 or Crysis 2 on this setup, maybe even on medium settings? 😁

I ran those exact specs—same CPU, just used an XFX 5770 and less RAM (2 GB). I had to play BF3 on low; if I bumped it to medium, I'd lose about 5 FPS. Crysis 2 ran perfectly fine, though.
The next step up is the HD 6790, which goes for $310. It’s a bit more expensive, but honestly, it isn't powerful enough to justify the extra cost.

I’m torn between grabbing an AMD Radeon HD 6790 or a GTX 550 Ti. Still got some digging to do...🙂It'll probably end up being the 550 Ti, though. I don't think that 6790 is actually going to fit inside my case.

To be clear, I made sure to wipe all my old ATI drivers before starting (I swapped out my old AMD Radeon HD 3870 because it was overheating like crazy). After the install, I registered the gear with XFX/AMD and grabbed the latest drivers, but still—zero sound. My audio was working perfectly fine right before I did this.
Any ideas?

If you're running everything through an HDMI cable and aren't using a dedicated sound card, you might have just missed the HDMI audio drivers during the setup.
